Day 151: j’aime, nice to meet you!

31 May

I am constantly mistaken for other people.

Today, a really sweet elderly lady approached me at lunch and asked if my name was Ann.  ”Is that you, Ann?” she asked.

I looked up with a smile and nodded my head, no. “Sorry, I’m not Ann.”

“You look just like her!”

This happens to me all the time.
All. The. Time.

Are you Julie?
Hi, Sharon!
What are you doing here, Sara?!

To each one I smile and nod my head in the negative.

“I am Jamie. Nice to meet you.”

It could be a good way to meet people actually. I should just travel around the country and stand on random street corners and wait for people to think I am someone else. It would be a fun experiment.

Just this last week at the National Stationary Show, I turned the corner and walked down another aisle of paper, journals and party supplies to a man in a booth who was staring down my name tag. I assumed he wanted to find out what company I worked for so he would know what product to pitch me. As I walked closer his face changed, and he looked quite disappointed.

“Oh, I thought you were Gwyneth Paltrow.”

“No, sorry, I’m Jamie. Nice to meet you.”

So, tonight I find it fitting to share the one and only GOOP – by Gwyneth herself.

In this issue she shares Jessica Alba’s new production …a company that sells only honestly good products for your family (honest.com).

It’s a good read with some great information on cleaner products for your family.

And, now… here’s my most favorite street corner in the world… right in front of the Louvre in Paris.  Maybe I should go stand on it and meet some new people?

“Nice to meet you, I’m Jamie.”

At least there my name means love.
J’aime.

Day 150: chill out, love -or- how to train your puppy

30 May

I love the word YES.
But, I have become the Queen of No.

We saw some of our favorite people this week.  One, was my college roommate, Laura, who conveniently lives right off I-95 in Wilmington, Delaware.  We are so lucky to see her every spring and fall on our trek between north and south.

This time, however, I felt like we arrived with the traveling circus in tow.  Our dogs.  One broke a lawn chair. The other ate all the sticks in her yard.

I suppose if you are a dog person you can easily nod your head in a “been there, done that” sort of fashion.  Laura’s family owns a cat, but she seemed to be very understanding of our canine mayhem, just the same.

For the record, we paid her for the broken chair and left with our tails tucked between our legs.  Good thing Laura has two children and a really big heart — and has known me for over twenty years!

Our next I-95 stop-over was with our favorite vet, and cousin, Brian.

This was Brady’s first time meeting Brian and he was, of course, on his best puppy behavior, which he proudly displayed by immediately sniffing out rat poison in the yard and gulping it down.

Did I mention Brian is our favorite vet?  He took control of the situation immediately with a little peroxide solution. Brady made it through just fine.

And, then, this old dog learned a few new tricks.

Brian explained the subtle nuances of dog training.
And, it’s all about LOVE.

Puppies don’t respond to “no” commands. They respond only to positive ones.  (Don’t we all?!)

Brian instructed us to ignore Brady when he cries, makes a fuss, turns into a puppy nightmare — because all he wants is love and attention — even if he has to throw a form of tantrum to get it.  (Sounds like all well-meaning two-year-olds to me.)

Which made me realize I have been doing everything ALL WRONG.
I have been the mothership of “NO” — “STOP” — “DON’T DO THAT!” — in hopes of showing Brady the ropes, and laying down the rules.

Turns out, I have been talking HUMAN and Brady only understands DOG.  But, there is a language that connects the two, and it’s called…. yep, you guessed it, LOVE.

Some tips from Brian included this: find Brady when he is doing exactly what we want him to do — like, laying down, nice and quiet and relaxed — and reward him with our attention.  Approach him with love and praise and say, “Chill Out. Good Dog.” in a happy, loving way.

“No” goes unheard because it is meaningless.
Love is actually training.

So, we have a new rule around here.
No more NO’s.

So, far, it’s working well. For one, I find myself saying much more positive words. I am also wiring myself to be on the lookout for positive behavior.  I can’t help but think that I must sound like a drugged out slacker, talking like The Dude from The Big Lebowski all day long with, “Chill out, good chill out!”

The good news?
So far, we have mastered a “SIT” on command without food involved! (Not me, Brady.)

And, I have ordered the book Brian suggested, Good Dog, Great Owner by Brian Kilcommons, in hopes of becoming a better purveyor of puppy love.

Of course, all of this doesn’t take the puppy out of the pup.
He just ate Justin’s ear phones for dinner.

But, I am looking the other way — or at least looking for other positive behavior to reinforce.  Like… “Throw up the wiring you just ate! Good doggy.”

I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it sometime soon.

Until then, I am reminded about the power of love.
No matter the question, or behavior, or the relationship, be it between humans or dogs …the answer is always love.

Woof.
Now, excuse me while I go chill out.

Day 149: island time

29 May

We are here!
We are on-island!
We are exhausted!

I loved seeing all the familiar sights as we pulled into Cape Cod, passing the fully updated Cape Cod 2012 sign on Route 28, then the giant, larger than life lobster on the side of the fake lighthouse at the round-about (a sure sign you are in Massachusetts is driving around in a circle called a round-about, making yourself dizzy as you pinpoint which offshoot road you are supposed to take to stay on the right path) — and, finally, boarding the ferry and crossing over to….

Island Time.

Ah…Island Time. The official time zone of “who cares?”

We found this out the hard way during our first summer on Martha’s Vineyard. Me, a recently minted, pink-slipped, corporate casualty, still wound tight like a yo-yo couldn’t figure out why NOBODY showed up on time. Fifteen minutes later I would be tapping my foot, on the phone, calling, checking up, asking, “Where are you, I’ve been waiting here for FIFTEEN MINUTES!”

“It’s Island Time,” people would tell me — “Get used to it.”

Now, after 4 days on the road, a long drive up the East coast, and a few nasty, roadside, fast food, icky meals layer, I can honestly say…

I am so happy to be on island time.
It’s funny how something that first annoys you can become something you love.
Actually. Something you long for.

It’s time for summer.
Well, first, a good night’s sleep, then…
A summer on island time.

Day 148: lovemore monday :: memorial day

28 May

A few photos from our long, long, drive that is almost over.
Road trips are fun, but they all must end sometime.

These photos seem most fitting on this Memorial Day, as we passed lots of monuments, cars and bridges during our drive.

And, what ‘s more American than that?
Happy Memorial Day to you and your loved ones.

Day 147: ridemore, lovemore!

27 May

Signs are everywhere.
Today, my friend Sara, sent me this sign she spotted that says, RIDEMORE, with a note that said, “Lovemore, Ridemore!”

It reminded her of my promise this year to lovemore and fearless.

It’s funny what we see when we start looking for it.
Kind of like buying a new car, then suddenly everyone else in the entire universe is driving it too.

Today was Day 3 of our drive north.  And, during our road warrior-ness we look for signs and billboards as we drive up I-95. Just to keep alive, alert, awake, enthusiastic — as well as, keep ourselves entertained.

Of course, there are our favorites, like the sea of billboards, practically standing as an American Icon, lining each side of the highway for 80 miles leading up to South of the Border.

There’s the latest from values.com with a mug of Kermit The Frog saying:
“Eats flies. Dates a Pig. Hollywood Star. Live Your Dreams, Pass It On.”

And, then, there are the smaller, mom and pop shop billboards that catch our attention.  Like this one:

“Chicken. Made Fresh. Almost Daily.”

Justin looked at me while driving, raised his eyebrows and repeated out loud, “Almost daily?”

Yes, let’s stop there for lunch.

And, that’s what makes our RIDEMORE road trip so much LOVEMORE fun.

Signs are everywhere.
You just have to look for them.

Day 146: On the road again

26 May

Back on the road, day 2. Which means that bags have shifted, pups have found new, sunny spots in the car, and we find ourselves dog tired after a 10-hour day.

But, I also found a few new Apps that I love and are worth trying out.

I-Exit – allows you to see what’s up ahead at the next few exits. It’s been great for gas, not so great for spotting hotels.

WordPress for iOS – testing it out right now on my iPad, may just be my new solution for blogging on the go, or on the road, or when I’m just lazy and daydreaming outside somewhere without wifi.

The real test – will it allow me to upload photos? You be the judge!
Let me know if these photos come through:

Day 145: f*ing friday :: fit

25 May

TGIF.
F*ing Fridays are back!
And, they will continue to occur on Friday. I mentioned some of my favorite F words back on Day 5 in Year 1, including: Fearless, Fabulous, Fine, Fun, Faith, Freedom, Forgiveness, to name a Few.

Last week I dove into the word Fried Foods.

Today’s F*ing Friday is dedicated to the word:
Fit.

As in, we all fit in the car.

After days of packing, storing, moving, we finally all found our seats in the car to begin our journey north for the summer.

We expected the ride to be tight and a little uncomfortable, but we didn’t expect the littlest one to vomit all over the car — one hour into the drive.

I turned around just in time to see a little dog nose heaving up and down. Just before the chunks began to burst, I froze. Then I screamed, “Oh my God!” at the top of my lungs as I watched brown chunks descend down between my clothing bags and into the crevices and floorboards of my car.

All of which alarmed Justin, who was driving and couldn’t see what was going on — I’m sure he thought something quite awful was happening like a roadside pile-up instead of just a little doggy vomit pile-up.

I gagged, but found a plastic bag and clean up the f*ing mess, all the while Justin laughing hysterically at my passenger predicament. And to think, I was worried about the tail-end in the car.

Brady may not remember this car ride, but we will — forever.
Just as we’ll always love our little one.

Day 144: packing and organizing tricks to love

24 May

We spent the day packing.
Packing. Packing. Packing.

I never feel more disorganized than when we pack.

And that’s why this is the most wonderful time of the year – when all the lost socks make themselves known and dust bunnies come out to play.

Every time we pack up our seasonal Florida apartment all I can think is “where did all this STUFF come from?”

Which makes it difficult to feed my TOSS pile.

For starters, I have a book problem.

Even with my iPad and Kindle, books of the bound kind hunt me down and corner me, begging to become a dust collector on an abandoned shelf. But, I love them. How can I toss them? What if I want to read them again?

Worse are the books that I haven’t got to yet but MAY want to read — someday — a snow day perhaps, in Florida.

Hey, it could happen.

Or, it couldn’t.
But, I’m packing and keeping my books just the same.

It’s this time of year that I always find myself wishing I had organized my space better, when we moved in. It’s when I yearn for closets and cabinets that look like they came out of the pristine pages from The Container Store flyer.

Something to put on my wish list for next year.

Until then, I found
8 Incredibly Clever Organizing Tricks to tide me over.  I hope you enjoy too.

Now, I’m off to pack more books.

Day 143: lessons from the dog file :: learning to share

23 May

Finally home, and before I turn in tonight after a long day of travel, I am hit with a few moments of amazement.

Most notable, Pup and Brady teaching us humans yet another useful skill.

One bone, two dogs.
So many lessons to glean about love, and of course, sharing our toys.

Day 142: just do it already

22 May

Today was Tory Johnson‘s Spark and Hustle tour stop here in New York City.

I was present and accountable and delightfully representing Women on Fire who sponsored the event today. Even better, I was with the one and only, Janette Barber of Sirius XM Stars. That’s inspiration in a nutshell if you ask me!

The day was full of speakers and inspiration from both small business owners and uber successful women like Laura Geller, Lisa Price and Liz Lange.

I couldn’t help but chuckle when I opened up one of our free gifts — SPACKLE.  But, not just any kind of spackle, this special kind of magic makes your face sparkle.

And, then, of course, who can forget the magic of Barbara Corcoran who took the stage as today’s final speaker and inspiration extraordinaire.

But, what stood out most to me, beyond the freebies, fun, friendship, and phenomenal women, was this overriding theme that everyone seemed to hit on…

Just do it.

Whatever it is that you want.
Do. It. Don’t wait for approval.

Whatever it is that you are afraid of…
Just get over it. It’s not as scary as you think.

Whatever it is that you know in your heart you want to do, create, run, build, launch, fly…

Do. It. Already.
Just do it.
