Day 258: trying something new :: kettlebells

15 Sep

If there is one thing I am good at it is making lists.

I love to make lists.

I have been known to form lists on scraps of paper, pads of paper, notebooks, diaries, journals, receipts left in my car, my purse, or my desk.  I have even made lists on other people’s lists.

If there is one thing I love more than making lists it is crossing stuff off my lists.

And, this week I did just that.
I tried something new and crossed it off my wish list for 2011 and The Promise 365 — it was good for my body.  Yesterday, Debbie introduced me to her trainer and Kettlebells.

KETTLEBELLS.
Criss.  Cross.  Off they go, off the list and across my body.

According to Wikipedia, Kettlebells are described as:
The kettlebell or girya (Russian: гиря) is a cast iron weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.

Ballistic?  Cannonballs?
Maybe.  But I can report this: it was way more fun than any weight lifting I have ever attempted, void of all bar heaving and grunting.

With the Kettlebell wrapped around my palm, it felt almost like a big clunky bracelet with a magic 8 ball attached to it, clacking across my wrist with each twist and turn.

Wikipedia continues:
The basic movements, such as the swing, snatch, and the clean and jerk, engage the entire body at once, and in a way that mimics real world activities such as shoveling or farm work.

Farm work?
I believe it.
But, it was way more fun than shoveling a ditch if you ask me.
And, today, while I may have been wearing old clothes, I was proudly wearing new sore muscles to prove it.
