Day 76: f*ing friday :: free food

16 Mar

It’s F*ing Friday!
I mentioned some of my favorite F words back on Day 5 in Year 1, including: Fearless, Fabulous, Fine, Fun, Faith, Freedom, Forgiveness, to name a Few.

Last week I dove into the word Freedom.

Today’s F*ing Friday is dedicated to the words:
Free Food.

As in, there IS such a thing as FREE lunch.

This morning, as I took my very first step out the front door, I saw something that caught my eye.

With keys in hand, I turned the lock on the front door and thought to myself, “That’s a pretty little leaf,”  just as I stepped over it on my way to my car.

But, something in me stopped half-way there.
I turned around to inspect the leaf one more time.

As I bent over, I confirmed it was indeed a heart — a tiny heart-shaped leaf.

In this year of adding more love and less fear, I seem to be attracting more hearts and finding them in the most random places.

In fact, just this week I went to lunch with my new friend Libby to celebrate her birthday.

I planned on picking up the tab as a surprise, for two reasons:

1) Because that’s what friends do. Period.

2) I have been searching for friends (since we are new to Naples) and I really didn’t want to blow this one by a little faux pas of not picking up the birthday tab!

At the end of our meal, as we flagged down our waitress to bring the tab, I had my hand ready to grab the check, not wanting to be outdrawn on the birthday surpise.

The surprise was on me.

Our waitress strolled back over to our table and announced our lunch had been paid for.

“What do you mean?
We both asked with confused smiles on our faces.

Our waitress just kept telling us over and over that Iberia Bank had picked up our tab. “Your lunch is taken care of by Iberia Bank— it’s free.”

We both sat there perplexed until Libby turned to me and said, “Did you do this?”

I just started laughing and said, “NO! But I wanted to!”

I asked Libby if she knew anyone at Iberia Bank, to which she confirmed not and we both scanned the restaurant for hidden cameras or other signs of f*ing tomfoolery.

Finally, we accepted the gift as our waitress presented us with two huge chocolate bars with Iberia Bank stickers on them.  As we giggled and hugged goodbye I told Libby that lunch was on me — next time!

I was, of course, surprised but not shocked.
It seems the more I focus on love the more I seem to be in the right place at the right time…

To discover a beautiful heart-shaped leaf on my doorstep.
And, free lunch with a friend.
