Day 275: an all american feast!

2 Oct

I have shared my dear Grandma Mary with you on this blog.

And, today, I am sharing the recipe she was most famous for: Grandma Mary’s Baked Beans!

We craved her baked beans! We couldn’t wait to taste her baked beans!  They were the star of every holiday dinner (and then, of course, they would hang around much later too).

Here’s my Grandma Mary with my grandfather:

And today I share a little bit of her with you.

It’s all in honor of an All-American (virtual) Feast for my friend Phoebe Lapine and the launch of her new television show Chef Race which airs TONIGHT on BBC AMERICA at 9PM EST.

PLUS!
Check out all 19 recipes below, from friends all throughout the land, who have come together to celebrate this fun and festive launch.

In a way, it is a fabulous, All-American Virtual Feast… one might call it a POTLUCK!

And, now… drum roll please… straight from the recipe card of Grandma Mary:

Grandma Mary’s Baked Beans

2 quarts beans – pinto beans
Cook until mushy done
Season with cooked bacon – don’t salt until after putting in 2Tbsp garlic salt.  (Taste to see if salty enough.)
3 tsp dry mustard
3 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 med onions
2 lbs brown sugar – use most if not all
1 8 oz can of tomato sauce
1 cup ketchup
2 Tbsp vinegar – add more if needed to get that sweet & sour taste
Taste to see if it tastes ok – add what is needed
