BLOG – GIFT DAY 120 :: 21-day spring clean: love over fear

30 Apr

Ah, love.

My favorite topic.

SPRING CLEAN TIP #13: Choose LOVE over fear.

We always have a choice.  A choice to be angry, mad, upset, unsettled or…
A choice to be intrigued, interested, questioning and curious.

A choice.

It always comes down to a choice of fear or love. Love or fear?

A pause.
A deep breath.
A decision.
A choice.

It’s cleansing, isn’t it?

What do you choose?

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 119 :: 21-day spring clean: just fail already!

29 Apr

You just screwed up. Now what?

Time to count your blessings.

Failure. Blessings.
One in the same really, aren’t they?

Each failure I have experienced has brought me more lessons, learnings, insight. And it always leads to improvement.

“To avoid failure is to limit accomplishment.” – Will Rogers

Like the jobs I have lost (pink slip anyone?).
The relationships that have fizzled and the great, big accomplishments that have fallen short.Or even the pizza crust I totally screwed up a few days ago.

The blessing is in the learning. Now I know what I will do next time, whether it’s a business or a pizza crust recipe.Which brings me to our Spring Clean tip of the day…

Day 12 Spring Clean:  Just Fail Already!

I have personally spent way too much time in my life trying to be perfect, or the best, or even just better than the thing right next to me.

It comes from a fear of failure.
Specifically, a fear of the unknown and a strong will to be in control.

Which works out great when everything goes your way, when hard work is all that you need to succeed. But it leaves you sitting flat on your face and pretty empty when forces beyond your control take over.

Which is precisely when embracing failure is well, fabulous!

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.” – Oprah Winfrey

So, fail away! Bring on the bust! Honor the totally unsuspected and groundbreaking whoop-sie-do!

Count your blessings and your failures.
And let the lesson in.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 118 :: 21-day spring clean: scatter joy

28 Apr

Spring Clean Day 11

I LOVE this quote: “Scatter joy!” from R.W.E. (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

It’s full of energy, and love, and well… joy!

And, that’s why it is our…

Day 11 Spring Clean Tip:  Scatter Joy

Joy doesn’t have to be huge to be fully present.
It can be small, tiny, barely there. But, oh is it there.

Like the gluten free oatmeal I have almost perfected. Add a little breakfast by the beach and well, that’s joy to me.

It’s a scene that I froze in my mind this morning — the blue sky, the bright sun, the breakfast I made from scratch. (Yes, I did make it from scratch, she boasts).

Hey, if I can cook, anyone can — and learning new things, well, that brings me joy too.

But the best joy is the shared kind… the kind that gets scattered around.

We’re coming up on a new week, so I have a question…
What brings you joy? How can you scatter it?

BLOG – GIFT DAY 117 :: 21-day spring clean: play

27 Apr

Spring Clean Day 10

Something new is in the air. I spotted three children playing on the beach today. They were jumping and running from waves as the water crashed onto the beach.

The giggles could be heard all up and down the sandy beach.

And it reminded me of something so very important.
To lighten up!
To play!
To laugh and giggle.

Which brings me back to our Spring Clean, and a commitment to lighten up over these 21-days, inside and out, for the head, heart, body and soul.

Spring Clean Tip #10: Play a Little

Next weekend some of my best girls are coming to town to spend a few days at the beach with me. I have been looking forward to it all winter.

I can’t wait to see my girls!
I can’t wait for a little bit warmer weather
And . . . I can’t wait to play.

How can you play a little more?

More tomorrow.

Spring Clean Tip #9: Say Thank You

My dear Mama Sling drove it into my little brain to always say thank you …and excuse me …and pardon me (…even to our dogs!).

They are an amazingly powerful pair of words.
Thank.
You.

Especially powerful when you use them in situations where you have messed up, done wrong, made a mistake or miffed it big time.

Thank you.

Of course those two words are a dynamic duo all times. They are a gift really.

I fully believe that words are medicine. And they can be gifts too.

So, today, please let me say “thank you” to you.

Thanks for being here.
Thanks for making a promise to yourself.
Thanks for committing to your dreams.
Thanks for supporting mine.

Thank you.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 115 :: 21-day spring clean: embrace the mystery

25 Apr

Spring Clean Day 8

It’s a beautiful spring day here in Boston and I am happy to report…

Boylston is Back!

I met a friend for lunch today at Pret A Manger on Boylston. The street and city were bustling with traffic.

But here’s the thing — it felt very intentional.
The street was recently reopened to foot traffic after the tragic events of last week, and that foot traffic felt joyous and full of a strong intention to BE here.

I found it moving.
And that brings me to our Spring Clean tip of the day.

If you haven’t already figured it out, the Spring Clean is more about lightening up our head and heart, body and soul (vs. scrubbing the floors — although you are totally welcome to send me scrubbing tips!).

Spring Clean Tip #8: Embrace the Mystery

I spoke to a very talented and amazing advisor today and her advice to me was this: Embrace the mystery.

As you know, I have been waiting and waiting to see doctors about the lump in my throat. I have another appointment with an endocrinologist May 23 and most likely a biopsy. Of course, I only expect good news… but then again, I wait for the answers too.

So in the meantime, I feel STUCK in the waiting place. Waiting for the next doctor’s appointment. Waiting for good news. Next steps. A shred of information that will allow me to understand what is going on in my body.

Embrace the mystery.
Mystery can be soothing. Enter it.

Today, this advice hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn’t realize how much I have been trying to control what is out of my control (like changing my diet, calling the doctor’s office repeatedly, searching GOOGLE like a maniac).

Embrace the mystery.

When I heard these words, I immediately pictured a small child in a dark bedroom — afraid of what he could not see. In daylight the room is fun, bright, full of toys and games. But at night, it’s just dark.

What this means to me is that the work I need to do is this:  Feel the darkness.

Even more so, I need to EXPLORE the darkness. Feel the hair standing on end down the length of my arm. The sound of my heart beating louder than words inside my chest.

Explore the mystery.
Like another great adventure.

Like walking down Boylston Street for the first time since the bombings struck out and seeing the people inside it for the first time all over again.

Seeing the way they filled the once empty streets, adding life on every corner. The swinging of doors, opening and shutting, as shuffling shoppers whisked in and out with wallets in hand ready to spend their money in an act of healing and support.

Explore the mystery.

Maybe it’s a reminder that out of darkness comes something different, but always something interestingly beautiful.

Here’s to the mystery…and exploring it with open eyes.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 114 :: 21-day spring clean: grace under pressure

24 Apr

Spring Clean Day 7

I received a little tip over email today:  Frozen Lemons.

Specifically, the tip was to grate frozen lemons into food as a way to help flavor it and add a little burst of lemony goodness.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I threw a few lemons in the freezer just to see what will happen. Have you ever tried this? Have other fun tips? Send them my way!

Spring Clean Tip #7: Grace
This morning I stepped into the shower and read the side of my Philosophy Amazing Grace Shower Gel bottle: GRACE.

Ironically, the rest of my day had nothing to do with grace, including a little outburst that I’m not proud of (this is where I claim being human.)

After huffing and puffing for a bit, I went to acupuncture and remembered what was written on the side of my soap bottle.

GRACE.

I take to heart the words on the side of that soap bottle, including:

Surrender, faith, forgiveness, good manners and reverence.

Ironic how the right words can show up exactly when I (we) need them.

Some might call it graceful.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 113 :: 21-day spring clean: little gifts

23 Apr

Meet my new best friend: Baking Soda.
I tried the baking soda facial last night and I must admit: me likey!

It left my face smooth and exfoliated. (Next time I will take before and after photos.)

Now that I know of even one more use for baking soda.

Which is a good thing since our oven broke last night.

That’s right.
The OVEN snapped.

Well, the element inside the oven snapped, after it sparked. No oven for me for a while. Which puts a little stop in my baking plans.

Which I find totally ironic since I just figured out a few good recipes that are Alkaline and sugar free.

It’s too bad since tonight was the perfect baking conditions — rainy, windy and practically begging for comfort food. The wind is huffing and puffing and trying to blow our front door down that faces the ocean.

And silly me, I thought it was April already. Actually it’s almost MAY.

Despite the chill around here, there was a very bright and beautiful spot in my day.  This arrived on my door step.

It’s so delicate and beautiful. And of course I love it because it is shaped like a heart.

And that brings me to our SPRING CLEAN.

Spring Clean Day 6 Tip:
As you know my year is dedicated to abundance. One way I am exploring abundance is by giving away a gift a day.

Some days I give heartfelt gifts (yesterday I donated to The One Fund), other days I barely just squeak by in the giving category (sure, walking Pup on a long walk down the beach counts as a gift – wink, wink!).

No matter the price, size or weight of the gift I find a little shift inside of me with each effort.

So today, I ask: what little gift would give you a shift?  Who can you surprise in your life? Who needs a heartfelt token of your love?

Gifts come in all sizes.
Sometimes little is big.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 112 :: 21-day spring clean: beauty uncovered

22 Apr

Happy Earth Day.

Today we celebrate all that is natural.

Back in Year One of The Promise 365, I did my style points with Holly Getty. One of those special, magical words that popped up in my session with Holly was the phrase NATURALLY GLAMOROUS.

It’s a phase that helps describe how I want to present myself to the world in my ideal world!

So today, on Day 5 of our Spring Clean, I am digging up some natural inspiration.

To begin, here’s a few good tips about healthy and natural makeup from IIN: 27 Healthy and Natural Makeup Products

Spring Clean Day 5 Tip: Baking Soda
Who says you have to go to a fancy spa to get a fabulous facial?
According to LIVESTRONG you can create a Homemade Baking Soda Mask.

So, in my quest to SPRING CLEAN, lighten up, and get ready for summer… I’m doing a homemade mask tonight.

Anyone care to join me?

The recipe is at this link: click here

I’ll report back, I promise.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 111 :: 21-day spring clean: failure, flops and flukes…what makes you sweat?

21 Apr

Total, utter failure last night.

Can you say FLOP?

I was so psyched to try this new gluten free, alkaline pizza recipe. I should have known it might disappoint. I mean, really, I can eat PIZZA??

Last night I bragged about my official proclamation to relinquish my fear of the kitchen, and then I created something pretty amazingly sucky.

I even shaped the pizza dough in the shape of a heart.
Wishful thinking? I’m not giving up.
I will try again. But as Justin pointed out, “I assume the pizza didn’t turn out since I found it in the garbage can?”

Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh.
Big. Fat. Failure.

But, that’s the fun of this new kitchen loving version of me. I’m not deterred, just determined.

I WILL BE BACK.

In fact, I woke up this morning and baked some chocolate, oatmeal, gluten-free, dairy-free, alkaline cookies (and they are awesome she says with her mouth full).

On to the SPRING CLEAN!  Today’s tip, for you cleaners out there, is this article….

Cleaning Strategies for Busy People.

But the real Spring Clean Tip is here:

Day 4: The Sweat Myth
It seems that sweating goes a long way… but maybe not far enough.

According to Jessica Smith sweating during running, hot yoga and the likes doesn’t release the amount of toxins that people believe (me included!).

The real work is done by the liver, which basically includes that other F word: FIBER.

Good to know…

Happy spring cleaning.
