BLOG – GIFT DAY 345 :: december travel: home for the holidays

11 Dec

Home sweet home.

SNIFF. SNIFF. Cough. Cough.
There’s nothing like flying with a cold. I just returned home and all I want for Christmas is to go to bed and sleep this head cold off.

I was excited to see the tippy top of snow covered mountains when I landed in Portland.

And, now, after planes, trains and automobiles (otherwise known as taxi cabs) I am home.

My gift today will be going to bed early. Because, really, what could be better than extra sleep to fight a cold?

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 344 :: december travel: #snow #home #gifts

10 Dec

It’s beginning to look a lot like…

The forecast calls for more #SNOW in Chicago tonight. But I’m not worried. I’m feeling pretty good actually — despite my cold. But that’s another issue.

Tonight, Chicago, will turn every snowier (is that a word?) and I turn even more excited. Because today I shared my gifts.

But first…. would you believe what I ran into tonight?
A sign from Oregon.
The night before I head home:

It still feels weird to tell people that I live in Oregon — because it still feels like a foreign land. But tonight there was a little piece of my heart that jumped for joy at a sign marked with the State of Oregon on it.  Even though it was for a brewery and I detest beer.

I can only compare it to that unexplainable wave of pride that hits you in your belly when someone brings up your team, your state, your school, your what-have-you.

And, it was officially the first time I felt it.
I hear there’s snow back at “home” and I’m headed there tomorrow to check it out.

But first, I want to say thank you to Chicago. You never disappoint. And today you allowed me to show up and shine doing the thing I love to do — lead a brainstorm session.

It’s taken me a long time to realize that brainstorms are one of my special gifts — a superpower if you will.

So, today, I proclaim it my gift of the day.

Because we have to claim our gifts.
We have to recognize them so that the rest of the world follows suit.

Ideas. Paper. Action.
Doesn’t matter where I am — I love it.
And I love to share it.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 343 :: december travel: hello chicago

9 Dec

Good morning snowy Chicago.

My you look pretty in the snow!  Until, of course, I walked down your streets through blustering winds, then you just looked cold…. kind of like The Windy City.

Tonight I am reminded that “new” is always a gift.

New snow is so beautiful. So clean, pristine, pretty and magical.

It’s a gift to remember that “New” is always a gift.
And that is so easy to forget.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 342 :: december travel: bye bye seattle

8 Dec

I’m waving goodbye to Seattle today.

As we left the city our shuttle driver said, “It hasn’t been this cold in Seattle for 20 years!”

I’m not sure if that is an official record, but it was cold here.
And SO sunny!

Cold enough to appreciate a warm fireplace – whether it is inside or outside!

December is here so I shouldn’t be surprised, but Ms. December feels unseasonably cold to me — and in so many parts of the country, including that crazy Philly Snow Bowl.

It’s enough to make me wish I would have read this article a week ago:

Outdoor Home Prep to Do Before Hard Winter Hits

Maybe you still have time?
If so, consider it a gift!

I am headed to Chicago and will report back from there.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 341 :: photos from seattle

7 Dec

Somehow we found sun in Seattle.

Usually I write more, photo less. But tonight, since the SUN was so amazing today in Seattle I am just sharing some pics from Pikes Market.

Including a golden pig, ferris wheel ride, Mt. Rainier, beautiful blue water and blue skies over a Seattle skyline.

Oh, yes, and some cold, cold weather.
But it was worth the shivers to see this city under a bright sunny sky.
A GIFT really.

Speaking of gifts, today my gift went to Jaynane.
Because it’s hard to leave Pike Market and not buy a souvenir.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 340 :: sunshine in seattle

6 Dec

We have arrived. In Seattle.

It’s all here. The Space Needle. The flagship REI store. And, of course, Pearl Jam.

I’m having flashbacks to the movie Singles just being here.

But before we arrived …we stopped.  In Portland.
At Voodoo Doughnuts.

There are many things the Pacific Northwest has that simply amaze me.
Mountains. Ocean. Cities. Glaciers. Deserts. Lakes.

And, now, a bucket of doughnuts for $5.

I’m not making this up.
I kind of wish I were, but, yes, indeed, we bought a bucket of donuts to take north and share with family.

Bacon maple donuts.
Apple fritters covered in peanut butter and chocolate chips.

Hubba Bubba donuts.

And all that sugar reminds me of something.

Some say that everything has already been done.
To that I say, voodoo.

If you think there isn’t room for your big, crazy idea.
Think again.

Make it bigger, better, sweeter, and full of more bacon and sugar.
Make it unexpected.
But don’t give up.

Now excuse me, I’ve got a date with a donut….and some sunshine…in Seattle!

More tomorrow.

Day 339: oh the pressure of frozen pipes!

5 Dec

I woke up this morning to my regular routine.

Let dogs out.
Take thyroid pill.
All was normal…

…except when I turned on the faucet there was no water.

Water, water everywhere and nor a drop to drink.

Our pipes froze.
Winter is here.

No problem except we were supposed to be on the road to Seattle early this morning.

Plans changed.
Day diverted.

But there is always a gift, somewhere, in the middle of chaos.

For us, the gift came in the form of catching the frozen pipes before we left town. It would have been way worse to arrive home after being away for the entire weekend to what I can only imagine would be a full on mess of water.

So we are now on the road. Heading north. Way behind schedule. Looking for a stop with WIFI so I can publish this post.

My gift of the day was an attempt to give a homeless man something to eat at one of our stops. He refused. He wanted money instead.

I guess that’s one lesson in this gift-giving promise of mine.

Not everyone will accept the gifts you have to give.

But it won’t stop me from trying.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 338 :: gift wrapping

4 Dec

Today marks the first official holiday “wrap.”

Even as I taped and folded the bright silver paper I was reminded that gifts come in many forms.

Tomorrow we drive to Seattle, for a little family time and a big concert.
We will also take some Christmas gifts to hand deliver before the holidays.

But the best gift of all will being seeing family.
It is the biggest reason why we moved to the West Coast.

And the best gift too.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 337 :: stepping up is a gift

3 Dec

‘Tis the gifting season.

And since today is #GivingTuesday I am in the mood to give!

First, I share a quiz from one of my favorite movies. Love ActuallyTake the quiz here to see how factually awesome you are… alas, I only scored 17 right so I must watch this movie again.

As you may know, I am historically terrible at movie trivia.

So, next up, is the game Heads Up, which I am equally terrible at but found incredibly fun to play. You can get it here. The game play is hysterical fun but the video play back is icing on the cake. I would share a video from my match against Justin last night but it’s too embarrassing. I mean, fun.

So finally, I am here. The real reason I bring up giving.
I just finished reading Stepping Up: How Taking Responsibility Changes Everything.

It was a good read: a quick read, full of inspiring stories of people stepping up and tips on how you can step it up.

So tonight I end this with a gift. I am giving this book to you — the first person to email me with their mailing address — it’s yours!  Click here to email me.

As the book says…

“I am IT.
I can change things.
If not me to step up, then who?
If not now, then when?”

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 336 :: simple gifts

2 Dec

Tonight I find myself thinking about simple gifts.

December is here.
It’s hard to believe there are 29 days left before the new year. So today, in my gift giving promise to give a gift everyday for the rest of the year, I gave something so simple it almost seems silly.

A song.
I didn’t buy it on iTunes. This song was sung with the lungs.

We have a newly minted 7-year old in our lives (Justin’s niece) who we called tonight to sing our version (off-tune a capella rendition) of “Happy Birthday” over the phone.

We were both highly impressed with our own singing, but when we finished there was silence. And then a soft seven-year old voice that said “Thank you. Goodbye!”

And that was it.

I wondered if we scared her off with our tune. I imagined her rolling her eyes at yet another phone call serenade. But when her parents got back on the phone they reported that she was twirling the entire time.

And that made my heart twirl and do a loop-de-loop. There’s something so precious about being seven. So smart. So amazing. So able to twirl with the best of ’em.

That reminds me of another simple gift.
This song, and my favorite version by Yo-Yo Ma and Alison Krauss.

I love thinking about true simplicity and all the forms it takes.
Even if it is singing Happy Birthday over the phone.

Because sometimes the best gift is twirling.

‘Tis the gift to be simple
‘Tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be
and when we find ourselves in the place just right
It will be in the valley of love and delight.

More tomorrow.
