JAMIE’S BLOG – YOGA DAY 1 :: leap year!

1 Jan

Day 1. Let’s see if I can keep the numbers straight.

Okay. It’s happening. Yoga for a Year. Day One. It’s on. And today I took the leap.

Not only did this promise start –  it started outside. Jill (my resident yoga teacher and almost sister-in-law who has signed on for this promise too) texted me today with the first challenge.

So I did. Justin did too. We drove down the “street” through the breathtaking Chuckanut Drive and landed at Larabee Park. Sometimes, I have to admit, I forget that we live HERE:

It was the perfect spot for a yoga year initiation.

The only problem was it was packed. With people. All over the beach trying to soak in the same holiday sun. So not only was I forced to get outside (aha, Yoga Challenge you are already winning) I was forced to get over my EGO too. Public. Yoga. Awkward. Check. Check. Check.

But maybe that’s the point? It’s already stirring up questions.

A friend reached out today asking about this Yoga Promise. Wondering why I chose it, what it meant, why now. So I looked up the word yoga. Just to reacquaint myself with the root concept.

“The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means “to join” or “to yoke”. Yoga is a practical aid, not a religion. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit.”

And then Justin asked me a few clarifying questions, mostly out of curiosity (and maybe to check my sanity):

  1. What if you get sick with a cold? How do you do yoga?
  2. What constitutes a yoga routine for the day?
  3. Isn’t this the biggest promise you’ve made to date?

Ummm. Okay. Good questions. All good questions. Here are some answers:

  1. What if I get sick?  I will do yoga in bed. I can do that. It’s possible.
  2. What is a yoga routine? I’m going with seven poses a day.
  3. Biggest promise to date? Yes. Definitely. And I am a little intimated to be honest. But excited too. And isn’t that the sign of every great thing?

So here’s the deal.
My body may be tight. My form may not be perfect. My ego still gets in the way. But I’m going to show up each and every day. I hope you do too, no matter what promise you make for 2016.

May the sun shine down on you. May your dreams come true.
And I promise – I will be here for you.

More tomorrow.

{here. we. go.}
