JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 79 :: march madness

20 Mar

Day 79: Brackets.

There is no madness like March. Because there is nothing more powerful than a clock running down to bring the power of NOW into right NOW.

I sat on the edge of my seat tonight watching Texas A&M secure their sweet spot  in nothing short of a miracle. And my heart fell for Northern Iowa as their own miraculous path disintegrated in not one – but two – overtime opportunities.

“This is madness!” I yelled at the television screen many times. “Madness!”
And it is madness I tell you. The Madness of marching to the final four.

And while nothing is more exciting than watching heroes born in the final moments of a game with time running off the clock, it’s also exhausting.

And that has me thinking…it is a not so gentle reminder that every second counts. In our games, in our sports, in our lives the time is ticking.

It’s madness really how fast time flies. Madness. But I suppose that is always our choice, how to bring the power of NOW into right NOW.

So right now…I am off to do some yoga.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 78 :: practice

19 Mar

Day 78: Trying out.

We just returned home from a theater performance like none other. The Missoula Children’s Theatre rolled through town this week and along with it came dreams, aspirations, and some serious costumes. And, of course, flowers.

Lots of flowers. It is flower season here in the Northwest (the tulips are coming! the tulips are coming!). But these flowers were roses and they belonged to the little hearts and minds on stage. Some for the first time.

As I sat watching our 8-year-old and 9-year-old nieces in newly donned costumes, I was moved by the power of theater. Not to mention the incredible timeframe: they tried out on Monday, learned their parts, practiced, memorized and then performed an entire play by Saturday.

The stage is quite magical.

It may be the only place we get to practice being someone else, trying on a new costume, a new persona, a new part. Moving differently, singing out loud in public, giggling backstage from the freight… knowing in the pit of your stomach it all doesn’t really matter and then again, at the same time, feeling like everything is on the line …as you step out before everyone you know …and everyone who loves you.

And that made me think of the power of practice.

Both the kind that we do because it matters, because everything is on the line and we don’t want to mess up … And the kind of practice we do for ourselves when no one is looking, when no one is keeping score, when there is no audience to cheer us on.

And that leads me back to yoga.
Yoga is teaching me the power of practice.
The magical power of practice.

There are no flowers in it at the end. There is no audience to cheer me on (although I do love my new yoga buddy named Justin who joins along!). No matter the day, the time, the reason, the place, the moves, the pain …the magic is in the practice.

Practice. Practice. Practice.
(…and maybe some pretty flowers too!)

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 76 :: mind. body. green.

17 Mar

Day 76: Irish.

Happy St. Patty’s Day. This one was too good for this lucky day of the Irish, so I had to share (thanks Margo!). My yoga tonight didn’t take this form, exactly. But I wonder just how much more flexible one might be… or become… if they attempted Irish Yoga?

Feeling lucky?

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 74 :: multi-tasking

15 Mar

Day 74: Right now.

I’m doing my yoga. Like, right now. Seriously.
Typing in pigeon pose… and a few others.

This day is running out of time and so am I… so yoga in front of the computer it is! And…maybe that’s not a good thing, not a very “yogi” thing to do… but at least I am showing up.

And, plus, we played tennis today so I feel like my muscles need a stretch break. Or a break stretch. Either way….yoga typing.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 73 :: stronger

14 Mar

Day 73: Uppers.

Upper body strength has never been my strong suit. Or, really, never been very strong for me at all. No one has ever walked by me and said, “wow, look at those guns” and by “guns” I, of course, mean biceps.

Even during the height of my basketball athletic body days I couldn’t really do chin-ups like the rest of them. Mine were more like hairline-ups. Maybe eye-ups on a good day.

So tonight, we broke it down to the basics. Upper body strength. Or, a fake ChaturangaIt was a bit more like chin downs than chin ups but I was still as weak (I used a block and didn’t quite make it all the way down to the floor).

At the end of the sequence the instructor on the video said, “if you do this every day…” and I thought… YES. If I do this every day. Good thing I am doing this every day.

And that has me thinking… what IF I did it every day? What would happen to my upper body strength?

You see, it’s so much easier to work on the things you are already strong with, where your strengths lie, where your biceps bulge. So much harder to get your chin up. But, I suppose that might be how you strengthen your strength.

By doing the things that aren’t easy but you know will make you stronger.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 72 :: score one for yoga

13 Mar

Day 72: Dips.

Score one more for yoga – it decreases cholesterol levels.  This one found tonight as I cleaned up my office and pile of magazines (thanks, O Mag)!

I suppose the best kind of medicine is that which gives us a dip in the right direction without pills but maybe with a little “good” pain.

Stretch goal anyone?

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 71 :: tree pose

12 Mar

Day 71: Roots.

As I prepare for a little day-ending yoga I keep recalling this tree.
I spotted it today on my drive home.

It reminds me of a woman I heard speak about growing older. Her point was this: the older trees grow deeper roots, bigger trunks, thicker limbs but it helps them stay strong in the wind and the weather, and it also allows them to protect the small saplings around them too.

That’s what I think about when it feels that my limbs are getting too heavy or large. It can be comforting. But mostly, it’s a reminder of our deep power when we are rooted.

Now that makes me want to do a tree pose.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
