JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 120 :: promises

30 Apr

Day 120: Keeping promises.

It’s Saturday night… almost Sunday.
And all I have is this ====== Yoga done!!!!

Sometimes it’s the little things that count the most.
Especially when it’s Saturday night at 11:50PM.

Small is big.
Especially when it’s your promise.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 119 :: upward facing laughter

29 Apr

Day 119: Giggles.

Tonight Justin and I did partner yoga… and as I fell over, giggling, I realized something. It’s really quite simple and profound.

Everything is better with laughter.
And laughter times two is even better than that.

It’s upward facing laughter, really.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 118 :: handstands and yoga questions

28 Apr

Day 118: Head rush.

So if there is something the human body is not meant to do I’m pretty sure it’s a handstand. Downward dog, sure. Plank, yes. Upward dog, yup! But stand on your hands or head… really?

As I push gently into this year of yoga I’m starting to realize that some of the poses feel natural on my body. Downward dog, sure. Plank, yes. Upward dog, yup!

But some do not. Stand on your hands or head… really?
I’m not sure who invented the handstand. Or the headstand. Standing on anything other than my feet seems, well, a bit upside down.

And yet, it is supposed to have benefits for my body that I can’t quite grasp. Except that for me, it makes me feel like my butt weighs 700 pounds heavier as the full weight of all my organs and innards and muscles and such bear down on my fingers. It’s really not human is it? To stand on your hands?

I know people do it. All the time I’m sure. I’m just not sure if it’s something I will be able to do. And, yes, of course, I CAN do a handstand when there is a wall next to me and I’m leaning up against it and someone else is holding my feet (usually Justin – thank you dear). But should I do it? Really? And just because you can, is it really a must? Must I, really?

It’s these questions and more that yoga is asking me this year. (That, and why my butt weighs 700 pounds heavier when it’s in mid-air, but that’s just a gravity-science-mind-warp thing I’m sure.)

But then there is this:  yoga is getting easier. Not all the moves, but some. And my body is craving the stretch yoga provides. It happens at odd moments. In the middle of the day. While sitting in my car. During dinner.

I literally catch myself doing the thing that drove me nuts about the little girls in grade school who took dance lessons. Bending and stretching out their legs and practicing a dance move in the middle of class. For me, it’s doing a yoga stretch in the middle of something else.

OMG – I’m becoming one. of. those. people.

But I suppose that’s something that happens on the journey of becoming a Yogi.
Finding the poses you enjoy. The ones you don’t. The ones that are good for you. And the ones that are not.

And maybe the wisdom comes with knowing the difference.
We’ll find out. The journey continues…

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 117 :: feeling old

27 Apr

Day 117: Perspective.

Last night I posted about Miss Ida. (100-years old and still running – amazing).
Tonight I’m reminded about Miss Idaho.

Not the one that wore a sash or crown or won a bathing suit beauty contest… oh, no. I’m reminded more of the little Miss Idaho inside of me. The one that was awkwardly tall, taller than everyone else. And the one who was given the “old lady” role in every play she ever tried out for (because of said height and the fact that she really couldn’t sing even though she tried, desperately, in the shower).

I am reminded of that Miss Idaho inside of me, the one that 20 years ago was in the play Grease with Jump Company (because of a facebook post tonight – thank you, Sam!!)

Here’s the cast list of a play from twenty years ago:

These are sweet, sweet memories. Just looking over the names brings back a flood of memories that I forgot were inside of me. Like unlocking a golden treasure, my heart leapt with joy reading each name and saying, yes! yes! yes! like “I remember you!”

And if you guessed that I was the “old lady” you’re right. I was. Of course, I was! Twenty years ago it seemed silly for me to play an old lady. I felt a little bit burnt by it really. It wasn’t fair — “Why do I always have to be the old lady?”  (say that in your most whiny voice three times fast, then roll your eyes and flop down on the couch — yes, you get the picture.)

Now I am edging closer to understanding what at least “mid-life lady” means and it seems impossible that all these years could have flown by.

Twenty Years. Twenty?

I assume for Miss Ida, that’s just a blink of an eye. For me, it’s half my life. And I suppose that’s what getting to be the “old lady” in real life brings… perspective.

I used to feel short-changed for being labeled with the tallest-girl-must-play-old-lady syndrome. Now, I’m starting to see it was and always is a blessing. Old ladies get to do cool shit. Like say what they want, wear what they want, (and run if you want – right Ida?!).

They also get to look back on the years that have collected that magic fairy dust called Perspective and spread it amongst the people they love most.  And, also, spread it across that whiny voice inside that just didn’t know enough to know just how good she had it.

Go. Grease. Lightning. Go.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S. Now off to yoga…. Day 117….almost getting some perspective!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 116 :: i’m going live to be a 103

26 Apr

Day 116: Running for it.

OH. My. I love Ida.

I’ve been thinking about age a lot lately. About how it doesn’t matter. And how it does matter. And then how it doesn’t matter at all. Ping pong back and forth because both statements are true.

And then I saw Ida.
And read the New York Times article:

At 100, Still Running for Her Life

And I love Ida.

She makes me want to run again. She makes me want to live to be a 103 (“I play safe for you and me cause I’m no fool” – anyone remember? anyone?).

Anyhoo… Ida. Thanks for showing us that age doesn’t matter.
And that it does matter too.
Keep running!

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S. Now to yoga!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 114 :: learning to walk in the rain

24 Apr

Day 114: Sun.

According to my iPhone I walked seven miles today. Okay, well, maybe it’s more like 6.97 miles but that’s so close to seven I’m rounding up.

But that’s not the breakthrough of my day. Oh no. It was the rain. Washington is teaching me to walk in the rain. Of course, I still wear my rain boots and raincoat, which is a surefire way to announce to the locals that you don’t live here, didn’t grow up here or are a tourist. (Some days I still feel like all three).

But today, I walked. In the rain.

And, somewhere in the middle of walking in the rain, three people stopped me to tell me how much they loved my red rain boots. Then a woman passed me on the Fairhaven trail and announced, “I love your pink raincoat!”

And, then, miraculously, the sun came out.

I’m not sure what to take from that, really. Did the sun come out because I left the house to go on a walk on a rainy day? Did the clouds part so that I could be the ONLY person in Bellingham walking around in rain boots while the sun shone and people ate ice cream cones?

Who knows?
But I do know this. It doesn’t matter if the sun shines if you don’t.
So shine on. Boots, coat, umbrella and all.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S. Yoga done! Body sore.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 112 :: no fear friday

22 Apr

Day 112: Fearless.

My tummy is full. So is my heart. Tonight I enjoyed a little dinnertime conversation at what is becoming my standard Filling Station. Thanks for dinner Jaynane!! It was a fun surprise. The best of surprises are the good ones from those you love, don’t you think?

Anyhoo…. the table asked us this:

So tonight I ask you this… what would you love to do if you didn’t have any fear?
Happy Friday!
More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S. Yoga coming up next…. if my tummy can handle it! I need a pose for digestion 😉

Tonight we watched a purple sky, perfect for a day of Purple Rain.

And as we watched the sky turn and the birds fly, the train left the station.

RIP Prince.
