JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 147 :: keep calm

31 May

Day 147: We have a bleeder!

Apple core.
I sliced my finger tonight while slicing an apple. My own fault, I’m sure, but oh my, the bloooooooood.

As I packed my finger with paper towels and watching them soak with bright cherry red blood I panicked (I admit) on the inside.

What if I couldn’t stop the blood? And, oh, my God what if I had sliced my finger off? Then what?? I’m sure I’ve seen this in a movie before.

I quickly wrapped some duct tape around my paper-toweled finger and felt my heart beat at the end of my finger for a good twenty minutes before I dared to look at it again.

Drama.

Just “keep calm” my bright blue band-aid now says back to me. And it’s a good message. I think there is another message here too …sweet body of mine.

While this cut is infinitely minimal, I mean let’s face it, a tiny cut. It still has me thinking about how important it is to take good care of my body.

And, it also has me thinking about the irony of it too.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away?

I’m going for a “yoga a day” plan here, which, happily doesn’t involve sharp objects or a full set of knives. Because it’s hard to do yoga with an injury. Although, it does make me appreciate what my body can do, and does for me, all day long without even thinking about it… until of course you’re bleeding out on the kitchen floor.

Keeping calm over here. Keeping calm.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 146 :: oh lavender

30 May

Day 146: Just a little stretch.

Tonight I stretched. Just a little yoga. Not much, but enough.
And I’m okay with that.
Sometimes not much but enough is exactly what the doctor ordered.

And then, there is lavender. And the lavender infused bath I took tonight.

My favorite scent. It reminds me of Lake Austin Spa. So yummy. So lavender. So calming. So perfect to rub on my skin before I go to sleep. And the light bulbs. Yes, light bulbs.

My friend tipped me off that you can dab just a bit of lavender essential oil on top of a light bulb…and then when you turn it on it turns up the scent. Genius.

A little stretch.
A little lavender.
A lot of calm.
Night. Night.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 145 :: ski to sea

29 May

Day 145: Summer.

Welcome summer. You arrived just in time for a festival celebrating everything in between the ski (Mt. Baker) to sea (Bellingham Bay). And, it was a beautiful day.

Even though rain was predicted the sun came out and shone down across Fairhaven, which was transformed into one giant parking lot. But who cares about having to walk to the finish line from your car when others have skied, run, biked, paddled or rowed their way to the finish line.

The best spot for me was watching teams cheer on their final relay racer at the bay. As I sat on a rock next to a group who kept looking for “Chris” and then screaming for “Chris” and then realizing it was wasn’t “Chris,” I have to admit, I got pretty excited to see “Chris” too.

They pointed at every yellow kayak announcing, “That’s Chris! He’s in a yellow kayak. That’s gotta be Chris.” And then the yellow kayak would come into view and it was not Chris.

Turns out there were a lot of yellow kayaks.
And then finally, with the next statement of, That’s-gotta-be-Chris, I leaned over to the woman sitting next to me and said, “I think that is Chris!”

She laughed, then they all laughed, and then she exclaimed, “Oh my God, you’re right, it IS Chris!!!’ They leapt to their feet and ran to the edge of the water taking photos and cheering on Chris as he made his final sweeping oars to shore.

I couldn’t help but get swept up in cheering on Chris too and caught myself yelling (silently under my breath) for him from my rock. “Go, Chris!” C’mon Chris! You can do this, CHRIS!”

Then the woman turned around from the water’s edge, looked right at me and yelled, “You called it! It was Chris!”

I pumped both of my arms in the air with the universal victory sign. And then we all watched Chris run up the hill and ring the final bell signaling the very last move of his team’s trek down the mountain from Ski to Sea.

It was bright and sunny, fun and funny and full of team spirit.
And it all has me thinking about how important it is to cheer on those you love, and to even be cheered on by strangers. And the power of keeping a promise.

And now, on to one event that wasn’t in the lineup today…yoga.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 145 :: the day after

28 May

Day 145: Sore.

And she’s sore. It’s official.
All day long my shoulder reminded me of the yoga class I took yesterday. Like a little nudge trying to tell me either I did too much or am out of shape. Or both. Or maybe just a little clumsy and didn’t warm enough to stretch my body in those ways.

It’s funny, this yoga thing, the more I do it the harder it becomes. Meaning… where a downward dog used to tax my arms, now a Crow taxes my ego. I believe I should be able to do more poses, stretch longer, and deeper.

Mind games. This yoga thing. Which is the WHOLE point.
Letting go of that ego in order to enjoy more.
And shoulder less.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 144 :: hot yoga

27 May

Day 144: Class.

Hot yoga today. Which is a progress on my part. It feels good to be able to get back into it. And as I downward dogged and crowed and fell over a few times I realized the room was full of women half my age. College students, all of them.

Ooph. It was more than apparent in the studio mirrors reflecting back at me. I was the old lady in the room.

How did that happen? Well for one, it was free yoga class Friday. So the room was packed with college students. But for another… well, I am twice their age.

While there was a piece of me that felt my being-ness being old there was also a part of me that I felt so much joy for those younger versions of myself.

What a gift to have yoga for an entire lifetime. Who knows if they will stick with it, but if they do, I hope they find themselves the oldest lady in the room.

Well, actually, I hope by then, I can still downward dog too… at 80. Why not?

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 143 :: skiing

26 May

Day 143: Festive.

Summer is officially a month a way. But I have a feeling it starts this weekend here in Fairhaven. Ski to Sea. It’s almost here. I’ve been told not to even try driving in town. It’s the next event in the long list of our Washington State initiations.

I won’t be skiing or sea-ing but I will be watching… and possibly doing yoga.

Which is what I am going to do next!
Namaste.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 143 :: big stuff

25 May

Day 143: Quinoa.

Sometimes a good thing can be too much of a good thang. And tonight I’m wondering if it is possible to O.D. on quinoa.

Yup. The big Q. So good. So versatile. So full my tummy is about to explode.

But not because it’s filling. Because it’s an illusion. It seems so tiny, so little, those circles of grain all packed together in a bowl. Now finding themselves packed away inside of me and making me wish I had eaten half as much as I did.

I think quinoa must expand. Like air. In my tummy.
And that has me thinking about yoga — which I still have to do.

Yoga also expands (I am learning). But not in a tummy stretching oh-my-god-I-ate-too-much sort of way. More in a small-moves-each-day-are-filling-me-up kind of fashion.

Small increments. Small moves.
Big stuff.
And that’s huuuuuuuge.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 142 :: monday sunny monday

23 May

Day 142: Sun sunny shine.

Happy Monday. I waited all day for the sun to come out. And then it did. Right before nightfall. Such a Monday tease.

And I am reminded that summer is close. We are closer than we think. There will be a day where summer pops. Just like that, she’s here, just like today, where she showed up.

And… all the flowers will follow.

And that is me, showing up tonight.
Happy Monday. Yoga next!

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 141 :: weekend done

22 May

Day 141: One day at a time.

Weekend done.
Blog done.
Yoga done.

And I’m left with just a moment to reflect before the week begins. So here’s just a little something pretty. For you. Because the weekend goes by way too fast, and sometimes, just a little moment to pause is what the doctor ordered.

RX.
Bring on the week ahead!

More tomorrow.

Jamie
