JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 166 :: your way, every day

20 Jun

Day 166: Great Vow.

I couldn’t say it any better than this article. The power of yoga every day (thanks, Jill!).

And I probably couldn’t say it any better than this paragraph:

“Sometimes yoga is sweaty and long and intense. Other times, it is subtle, like the generosity to let someone cut in traffic or being patient with our loved ones. It is this mode of living yoga, finding union in our thoughts, words, and actions that provides consistency in practice, which Judith Lasater says, “is the highest form of discipline”. Whereas, if we were to adhere to a strict regimen of asana 90 minutes a day, 7 days a week, but found that we were no kinder, gentler or more peaceful, then we wouldn’t be in the practice of yoga. Instead, it is better to practice your yoga, your way, every day.”

But I do know this:
I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t/didn’t do yoga every day. I mean, really, easy thing to say now when I can look back and remember. But I seriously now question why I didn’t think I had the time or the effort or the patience to do something that has become so simple, so easily integrated, so much a part of my daily life.

I also know it’s because all pressure is now off. As this articles so nicely sums up:

“Plus, when you know you will have another opportunity tomorrow, there’s less pressure imposed on each instance of practice.”

Yes! So true.
Instead of squeezing every last drop of sweat out of my body for a class I paid $15 dollars to attend and must get my money’s worth — I now gently focus at the end of the night and listen to my body. What does it want? What would feel good?

And then when I do show up for a class that I pay $15 to attend I still listen to my body because I now know what it is saying. I can hear it. I can feel when it says to slow down or amp up or stretch deeper or stay longer. Instead of following along with someone else’s pace or looking up to make sure I am in tune and on time. Instead, I still share space, but I stretch to my own hearts content.

Why did it take me so long?

I suppose starting a home practice is part of the process of letting go. Of expectations around what yoga is. Or what exercise is. And of what levels of sweat constitute a bonafide yoga experience.

I also think there is an invisible power in making a promise. Or a “great vow” to yourself.

When you make a promise to yourself nobody else can take it away.
When you make a promise to yourself you are the only one that may judge it (if at all).
And when you make a promise to yourself you show up for yourself.

It’s not selfish.
It’s self-care.
And to me, that’s a union.
Of head, heart, body, soul — and everyday life.
Your way.
Every day.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 165 :: crow

19 Jun

Day 165: Birds.

Happy Father’s Day.

Today while talking to my own papa I heard a cackling of crows outside my window. It was very Alfred Hitchcock. And loud.

And then tonight there was this.
The full moon:

It is all sort of eery but it has me hoping that summer is on its way for real. Like the moon and the birds know something I don’t. Longer nights. Warmer weather.

The season, it is a changing.

And… now it’s time for me to try out my own crow.
Yoga style.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 164 :: bringing out the best

18 Jun

Day 164: Overheard.

I spent the afternoon at a coffee shop. One of my favorite places to catch up on work and writing and sometimes, other people’s conversations.

It’s not like I mean to listen in to their conversations, it just seems to happen when you’re packed between cups of mocha and leather chairs, elbow to elbow, inside on a rainy day.

Today, one man, who was clearly hard of hearing, kept repeating what he was hearing in his private conversation. At higher decibels than what is typical inside a coffee shop.

I overheard every word of his conversations. Multiple times. Including the words that his ears were translating differently.

She said: “Do you believe in the father, the son and the holy ghost?
He repeated: “Do I believe in ghosts?”
She repeated: “No, I said, do you believe in the father, the son and the holy ghost?”
He said: “No, I don’t believe in ghosts.”

And so it went on for hours. He misinterpreted her words. She repeated them. He repeated them again. And on and on.

At first, it was annoying as I wished I had brought my headphones to drown out the noise. And then it was amusing as he kept changing the meaning of their conversation. And finally, it was quite inspiring.

She was so patient with him, repeating and repeating and repeating with love in her voice what she was saying. As he was trying his best. Wanting to hear. Wanting to understand.

As I sat there trying not to listen, and not being able to help it, I kept thinking about her incredible depth of patience. To repeat herself until he really heard, until he could understood.

And, then, later today I received this:

And I realize, tonight, as I write this blog post, that she was doing just that. She was bringing out the absolute best in him. The stranger in the coffee shop that was hard of hearing. The woman with her patience for repeating. For all of us listening.

It has me thinking about the power of patience.
And listening.
And higher goals.
Higher vibrations.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 161 :: feel my pulse

15 Jun

Day 161: Being human.

Tonight I am honoring tears.
One of the most magical human qualities that we possess.

It’s been a while since I have had tears falling down my cheeks as I write on this blog. But tonight I feel and taste these salty tears because of this song.

One thing that yoga has taught me so far this year is to listen to my body. To know when to take it slow, sit with stillness, and stretch with confidence. It is also teaching me when to move with strength and when to call upon the warrior inside.

In other words….
To feel my pulse and heart beating inside of me.

And my heart is telling me this: we need a solution.
How many more songs, letters, sit-ins, filibusters, deaths, tears will it take to call upon action to create a safe movie theater, dance club, school, public space?

I have no answers. But I do know this.
Transformation starts from the inside and radiates out.
It’s an inside job. For each of us.
So I continue to write my thank you letters. Tonight with tears.

And it has me wondering what it would take to LISTEN more. To each other. To our hearts and not our agendas.

So that we can all be here together.
To love more.
To live more.

More human.
More being.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 160 :: giving thanks

14 Jun

Day 160: Thank you.

The news has me feeling a bit overwhelmed and a lot under pressure. How to solve these societal issues, these mass shootings, these hate crimes, wars, problems, issues, heartaches. It seems there is not a clear answer.

And so, I’m just going to do something else.
Give thanks.

Tonight I wrote a thank you letter. And I’m going to keep doing it until I run out of people to thank.

And then I’m watching lip sync battles.
The only battles I can deal with right now until I come up with a better solution.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 157 :: perfectly imperfect

11 Jun

Day 157: Shine on.

Today was a perfectly imperfect day. As in “seconds.”
Dimples, dents, smears, scratches, seconds and all.

Or in the world of Seattle …Glassy. Baby.
True to glassybaby form, money was raised to benefit an important community organization. Today, it was for the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation. And I was thrilled to be there. In the heat of it, for a good cause, a good buy, a good time.

Oh baby, it was exciting. My first!

And, as we know, you never forget your first time.

But it all has me reflecting on seconds. I’ve spent most of my life trying to be first. Number one. The winner. On top of the world. But today, the t-shirts said it all.

Perfectly. Imperfect.
Owning our “imperfections” may be better than first. Or second.
In fact, it might just be better than perfect.

Because it’s real.
Dimples, dents, smears, scratches, seconds and all.
A big lesson we could all learn from a little glassybaby.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S. Yoga….next!
