JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 205 :: vintage

31 Jul

Day 205: priceless.

Life is pretty special when you get to spend it with those you love. And birthdays are even more special when you get to spend them with those you love too.

Today we celebrated Jaynane and Colin, two birthdays in one week but a lifetime in the making. Before I do my yoga, as I sit atop an air mattress writing this post surrounded by a house full of sleeping kids, adults, and adults who act like kids (or is it the other way around?) I’m reflecting on what it takes to be a vintage classic.

Vintage is old, sure, but it’s so much more than that.
Vintage is aged but wise.
Vintage is better with age, really. Aged to perfection you might say.
Vintage is priceless, powerful and precious.
It’s pretty darn good. Precisely.
And one might say, that’s pretty fabulous.

We think Jaynane is fabulous too, and at 70 and every year, month, week and day leading up to this moment in time, she proves that life can get more beautiful and bountiful with age.

She is so vintage.
Aged to perfection, and it only gets better from here.
Because the celebration continues tomorrow…

Here’s to tomorrow.
A vintage classic in the making.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 204 :: water and sun

30 Jul

Day 204: Good Recipe.

It’s hard to beat the combination of water and sun.
Okay, maybe add in a boat….

But still..
Still waters… Sun… Saturday.
It’s summer recipe for happiness.

I wish now that I had done my yoga in the sun near the water today. So…why didn’t I do that? I don’t know. It’s a good question. I have my home practice down but my public park practice is still a bit, well, awkward….embarrassing…too public?

And that reminds me of this:
Tension is always an opportunity for expansion.
Must. Remember. That.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 202 :: mothers and daughters

28 Jul

Day 202: Birthday Part Deux.

I’m thinking about mothers and daughters tonight. It’s been all over the news and the internet is abuzz. A woman is nominated by a major political party for a presidential race for the first time in our country. It’s a watershed moment. One that will be reviewed in the history books for generations to come.

And yet, as a daughter, the mother I’m thinking about is my own.
Today would have been Mama Sling’s birthday, if she were here.

It’s always a watershed moment in my life, remembering my mother on the day she was born. Her July birthday being in the middle of summer, but the sunshine she shone was throughout the entire year and her entire life. Much of that light she shone on me, always telling me that I could do anything. There were no limits. And it all seemed possible with her love.

So, here’s to all the mothers. The ones that show us the way. The ones that remain with us even when they are gone. And the ones that teach us that we can do, or be, anything.

Happy Birthday, Mama Sling.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

Day 200: Water.

Happy Monday. Sometimes just remembering the place that makes me calm, makes me calm. Like this….

Ah…..

Where is your calming place?

Yoga done.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 199 :: what will happen next?

24 Jul

Day 199: Halfway.

We are halfway through the year. Just over the hump. Slightly on the downhill side. I’m starting to connect the dots of where this promise is taking me. How about you?

What have you noticed so far?
What is happening in your world?
What is unfolding in new ways for you?
Any surprises?
Anything new?
Anything old?

From here on out through the rest of year I begin to form my next promise. October is when it usually comes together, during the harvest, the time when everything starts to make sense.

We are not there yet, but I am starting to see a few pops of color. Starting to see the outline of what’s to come. What I am learning? What is going to unfold next?

Much like tonight’s sunset.

It’s beautiful and yet still mysterious. The colors are just popping, keeping my attention while I watch to see what will happen next.

Doing yoga every damn day has been a trip so far. One that has taken a different turn than I expected. I am not thinner (darn). I am slightly stronger (good). I am not calmer (bummer). But I am more deeply aware (interesting).

The year will move us all forward, with a few surprises I’m sure.
And just like the sunset I’m wondering…
What will happen next?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 198 :: promises

23 Jul

Day 198: Joy. Joy.

There are so many things I love about this photo. The girls are not just adorable, funny, smart, fun and full of life. They are beautiful too. They are the two biggest reasons we moved to the PNW and they make my heart so very full.

I also love this photo because it took place outside on a summer night right after we had all braided each other’s hair. I braided their hair and one of these little scrumptious ones braided mine. It’s a circle really, one I don’t take lightly. Passing down the art of the braid.

I think of the generations of women who have braided each other’s hair over time and time and time again. I think of my mom and my aunties who braided mine. And I think of the braids these girls will continue to weave long into the future ahead. It’s a circle of women, the art of the braid. And I’m so glad I’m here to be a part of even just one strand.

It’s a lot like this promise of mine. While every day is different, every moment counts. Whether you are looking for better health or a better situation, it all comes down to a promise.

So now, I yoga. To keep this promise of mine.
Are you keeping yours?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 197 :: ice cream for dinner

22 Jul

Day 197: Full.

Last night my little niece asked why grown-ups get to watch TV at night after everyone goes to sleep (meaning her). It’s a fair question. I remember having the same thoughts as a child. Including, Why do I have to sit at the kids table?  and more…

So tonight I relished in one thing that a Big Kid gets to do. A privilege only afforded to those who have entered the full-on experience of Adulting.

Eating Ice Cream for dinner.

And then I ordered a hamburger too.
And still had the ice cream…
It’s what Big Kids do!

I write that as I watch TV after everyone else has gone to sleep. Because, sometimes, in this overwhelming world of adutlhood, it feels good to act like a kid again.

Next, I yoga. A privilege that comes from keeping my promise.
How is your promise going?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
