JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 237 :: you always remember your first

30 Aug

Day 237: So many firsts.

I am home. On dry land. Tired, sleepy-eyed and remembering vacation as if it were a mirage in the desert. So, now, I recap and recall each day of our trip, one by one. Starting right now.
Lake Powell Day 1:

It was a trip with many first. So many we counted the “firsts” each day of the trip.
On the first day of the trip, we discovered it was the….

  • First time in Colorado (Courtney)
  • First time in Utah (Courtney)
  • First Road Soda (don’t ask)
  • First time on a Sea Doo (Jamie + Courtney)
  • First time to Lake Powell (Most of us!)
  • First time on a House Boat (Most of us!)
  • First time using a Garlic Roller (Jamie and Courtney)
  • First Putting up Bimini Top on a Malibu Boat (Courtney)
  • First time lifting a Sea Doo onto the top of a Houseboat (All)
  • First time doing yoga on a Houseboat (Jamie)
  • First time doing night time sand yoga (Jamie)

And for Courtney….it was the first day of the trip to get pushed into the water. But believe me… not the last.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 236
back to life

Day 236: One more.

There is one more leg of our journey and then we are home.
Vacation is over.  We are back to reality.

And I want one more.
One more day of vacation.
One more chance to water ski.
One more dip in Lake Powell.
One more large dinner with family.
One more sunny day.

There are so many “one mores” to want and wish for that I’m thinking that might be the sign of a once in a lifetime vacation.

Wanting one more.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 242 :: lizzy’s tip

28 Aug

Day 242: Tiny Weights, Big Pain.

It’s the last day of vacation. And while I am in the middle of a lake, most likely crying my eyes out because I have to go home tomorrow… the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from Lizette. The irony of this post is that I reported on my accidental core sculpt class a few weeks ago.

Thanks to Lizette for this yoga tip and a big thank you for taking us on vacation in the first place. We love you, Lizette!!!

Lizette’s Tip:
Two things I learned from yoga sculpt:

  1. Choose of the weight of your weights wisely
  2. Beware of the add-on.

It all begins in warrior one. Then, beware, if the instructor says, “would you like more of a challenge?” Realize you won’t be able to walk the next day.

It’s ironic because the challenge of the add-on is called a “micro” bend. There’s nothing micro about it. While doing the movement it feels tiny, and you don’t think you are doing any damage, but believe me, you will not be able to walk down the steps the next day.

Your initial reps with three pounds may not feel like much but believe me…
Tiny weights. Big pain.

So…..vacation is almost over. I will be back live tomorrow with photos and I’m sure a few antics to report from Lake Powell. See you then!

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 241 :: courtney’s tip

27 Aug

Day 241: Patience.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from Courtney. An artist and blogger who recently moved to Portland Maine. (For what it is worth, we all believe that New Girl is actually based on Courtney’s real life.)

Courtney’s Tip:
Be patient and remember that you are showing up. Sometimes that’s all you can do.

Well said, Court. Well said.

You can follow Courtney’s adventures on instagram at:

And check out her artwork on her artist website.
Through use of subtle and elegant embroidery Courtney’s work explores the conceptual connections between the structure of a woman’s body and the homes they create.

Vacation. All I ever wanted… Vacation… happy to get away.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

Day 240: Friday Feeling.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from Amy again. Since it’s Friday… I thought it would be fun to be short, sweet and quotable.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 239 :: jill’s tip

Day 239: Benefits.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from my sister-in-law and resident yoga instructor, Jill. She is a yogi mama to two daughters and so much more! She’s the one I always go to when something hurts or I’m not sure how to do a pose. So I trust her. You should too!

Jill’s Tip:
It only takes twelve minutes! If you have twelve minutes you can get healthier bones.

Here’s an article from the New York Times.

As the article says, “…yoga’s “side effects,” Dr. Fishman and colleagues wrote recently, “include better posture, improved balance, enhanced coordination, greater range of motion, higher strength, reduced levels of anxiety and better gait.”

Thanks, Jill! I feel better already. Even though I’m on a boat. I’m doing yoga. PROMISE.

You can find Jill at Quantum Health Lounge.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 238 :: stacy’s tip

24 Aug

Day 238: Opening Up.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from my dear friend, Stacy. She is a yogi extraordinaire, acupuncturist and so much more!

Stacy’s Tip:
When I want to feel free, open up my breath, and release stress and tension, this is one of my favorite asana.

When done correctly, Parivrtta Upavishta Konasana opens the meridians that have everything to do with that’s happening in our pelvis, low back and hips. Most people store a lot of pain, tension and emotion in this part of their bodies. Unlocking this is a key to freeing up huge amounts of energy that can be used to support your vitality.

In this picture I am reaching out through both of my heels and my right sitz bone is reaching for the mat. The tip of my tailbone is lifted, inner thighs spin down and back. My spine is long. My lower arm is pressing against my inner thigh to give me leverage to twist and open my right side chest to the sky. I extended my top arm straight up to the sky then over my head towards my left toes. With that full extension, I then bent my elbow to relax into the stretch of my side body and my breath.

There are several meridians opened in this pose. These are the primary ones: Gall Bladder, Spleen, Kidney, Heart, Urinary Bladder, and Dai Mai. Which ones are opened, depends on where one places the emphasis and internal energetic awareness of the pose.

Find out more about Stacy’s work in the world. Plus! She is leading a yoga retreat in Guatemala next year if you want a little adventure and a lot of yoga!

Day 237: Feel the burn.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

Today’s tip is from Justin. Because, anyone can do yoga. Even Justin. While he is more of a smartass than a yogi, here is his best tip of the week.

“I always do on a full stomach. Otherwise, it’s just stretching. You can’t burn any calories if you don’t have anything to burn.”

And there you have it, folks. Justin’s tip of the week.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 236 :: amy’s tip

22 Aug

Day 236: That’s so yin of you.

I am officially on vacation. In the middle of a lake. On a houseboat. (Maybe even a bit inebriated…maybe? That’s so not yoga of me.) But the blog goes on!

There will be a few tips and tricks and inspiring notes this week from friends far and wide. Today’s tip comes from my dear friend, Amy Leigh Mercree. She is a bestselling author, wellness expert and all around inspiration.

Amy’s Yoga Tip:
My favorite yoga tip is to take restorative yoga. It’s the most relaxing and restful yoga I’ve ever done. And exactly what I’m looking for in a new yoga class. Bonus points if the instructor uses essential oil sprays or comes around and put essential oil on you while you’re in a posture.

Restorative yoga is yin, very feminine. I use that time to nurture my feminine side because we live in a world that is so action oriented. In a typical class you stay in a posture anywhere between five and 15 minutes. But you’re completely supported using bolsters blankets and blocks. So it’s really a deep stretch without any tension. After class, you feel softer, looser and more relaxed. Now that’s my kind of yoga!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 235 opening up

21 Aug

Day 235: Vacation Nation.

Vacation has started.

And much like the year we went to the grand canyon, this vacation will also be taking me outside the realm of a reliable internet connection.

And, in many ways, that was one of the best parts of vacation. A week on the earth without connectivity to anything other than friends, family and nature. Oh, there was so much more too – you can read about it here.)

This year we are off to Lake Powell.

© Dndavis | Dreamstime.com – Lake Powell

So I have repeated the process I used a few years ago in the canyon – prepopulated blog posts! This year, they will be yoga tips from friends far and wide. Some are funny, some are science, some are brilliant. Further proof that there is a yogi in each of us.

Enjoy the yoga series…. and I will see you, back live, right here on the blog August 29th. But I will be here in spirit, every day. AND… I will be doing yoga every single day on the Lake too.

My goal is to get photos (oooh red rocks!). But I’m sure I will come home with much more. Because vacation always opens us up to more. And I can’t wait to see what is in store!

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
