JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 30 :: music to my ears

30 Jan

Work. Out.

I found myself at the gym tonight on the elliptical machine. It was made “fun” by an old playlist labeled “jamie’s workout”. I accidentally stumbled upon it on a recently charged iPod.

The music was a smattering of songs from my past. The angry ones were from my divorce era. The happy ones from college. The girly ones from my twenties.

It was a KIND way to workout. A sort of time machine. A reminder of where I have been and WHO I have been all based on the beat of the songs of the times.

Now that I have an Apple Watch tracking my every move I know that playlist was worth 300 calories burned. But, in my heart, that playlist is worth so much more. Music to my ears. Memories to my heart.

Kindness to my soul.

More tomorrow….
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 29 :: being kind

29 Jan

Kindness Matters.

This sign now sits next to my bedstand. It was a birthday gift (thanks Justin!) but it’ also a reminder of my promise this year – to be kind and to embrace intentional acts of kindness.

It’s a reminder, for sure. It’s a sign, for real. But what I know is this: we have to walk the talk in order for something to be ingrained in us and then manifest on the outside around us.

So I am walking (and talking) and trying to incorporate kindness into my days. Even when so much on the outside seems to go against that grain.

Want to walk in kindness with me?

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 28 :: sharing and books

28 Jan

Books.

I love to read. So today I am celebrating books.

Books and ideas turn me on. I am a brainy-nerdy-book-reading student of big ideas. But I never have the time to read all the books sitting on my bookshelf. I start most of them, I finish some of them, I barely crack open a few of them.

So I really love this…

Today, I spoke with Steve Cunningham, the CEO of ReadItFor.Me today. He offered to share a little gift with all of my network. (I think that is KIND and nice so I’m sharing tonight on the blog.)

Read It For Me sends free book summaries of all the latest business book reads.
There’s no catch or credit card required. If you want a free month, all you have to do is go here and fill out a quick form, and then Readitfor.me will set up your account.

Pure disclaimer, if loads of people sign up I get a bonus membership to ReadItFor.me, so there’s that little perk. Only sign up if it will benefit you! 😉

Now on to some of the books I love… here’s my top Biz Books:

Lovemarks
Purple Cow
Eat That Frog
The One Thing
The Art of War
The New Rules of Marketing & PR

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 27 :: 4-letter friday

27 Jan

GOOD.

It’s 4-letter word Friday! Diane, the queen of this game, the one who introduced me to it, sent me a birthday wish yesterday. It said:

“May your birthday and all your days be filled with love, help, hope, kind acts, pals, fair play and good time(s)”

I have to hand it to her.. she is GOOD at this game!  So tonight, I am celebrating the 4-letter word GOOD.

flowers thepromise365.com
As in good friends, good food, good flowers, good gifts, good drinks, good gracious I had a birthday this week! And that reminds me of this:

We have to celebrate the GOOD times. It’s the KIND thing to do. That brings us to the next Kindness Challenge.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 26 :: birthday

26 Jan

Kindness.

I am in awe. Mostly at the kindness that birthdays bring in out in everyone I know. I am so thankful and grateful for the text messages, facebook posts, calls, messages, and all the ways that I have been reached today. And touched.

It is the gift of being seen and remembered. Is there anything better?

It reminds me in this year of Intentional Acts of Kindness that gifts and kindness come in many forms (money, love, care, listening, seeing, honoring). Not all are seen or heard but all are felt, deeply, with the heart.

Here’s to another trip around the sun. Thank you for being here with me. I feel you. I see you. I hope you know how much you mean to me.
More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 25 :: kindness is…

25 Jan

Grits. Guts. Grace.

On the eve of my birthday I realize this:
It takes a lot of guts to get older. Some Grit, Guts and Grace. Getting older is not child’s play is it?

Not that I consider myself old by any stretch of the imagination. I still feel like a small spark in the universe expanding at light speed.

But tonight as I reflect on my birthday, and that little spark that came to be me, I am curious about kindness. Wondering what is the kindest thing I could possibly do to honor this day ahead.

I will go to the spa for a little treat – that is already in the works.
I will reflect on my mom and dad, the two who are kindly responsible.

But I am also reflecting on that inner part of me that never wants to grow up. The part that wants to learn, grow, expand, and soak up everything around her like a sponge…because this world is so big in so many ways and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to get to ALL of it.

It seems like that might be the kindest gift I can give myself. To always be on the lookout for growth. And a little bit of that Grit, Guts and Grace.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 24 :: patience and breathing

24 Jan

Oh, Doggies.

Today two little doggies taught me patience. And how to breathe.

I caught Pup all curled up next to his bed chewing on something. Something plastic. As I looked closer I saw it was a candle lighter. A butane candle lighter and the end was chewed off. Plastic shards sat on the carpet. Brady looked up from across the room like he wasn’t the one who snagged it from on top of the counter in the first place.

Then I freaked out. And called Jaynane (a nurse) who told me to call the Vet. The Vet told me they would call me back because they to research it since they had never had this happen before with any of their patients. (Oy. Vey).

Then Pup vomited.
Then I called the Vet back to report the dog vomited.
Then I called my Dad.
Then the Vet called back and I hung up with my Dad.
The Vet told me to watch for signs of lethargy since the dog already vomited they would induce it again. Then they gave me the emergency after hours number and wished me luck.

I called my Dad back. He reminded me of the “fun” of dog ownership.
Then I called my Medicine Woman.

And somewhere in the middle of all that my new Apple Watch that was silently sitting on my left arm (an early birthday gift) began to buzz. The screen lit up and it said, “Breathe”.

Then I laughed. Out loud.
And then I remembered that patience and breathing go hand in hand. Even if it takes a reminder from the watch that sits on your hand.

Breathing… is a form of kindness.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

DIY.

Oh, weeee! More signs of kindness. This one though is a brand of kindness you can make for yourself… a big thanks to Eve for sending it my way. (thank you!)

It’s like a Kindness Scavenger Hunt. Or Kindness Advent Calendar. Or Chores for Good.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 21 :: signs of kindness

22 Jan

Be Nice.

Signs. Signs. Everywhere signs. Tonight, I am reminded that what we look for, we see. And what am I seeing? Signs of KINDNESS.

It’s like Red Car Syndrome. You know, the effect of buying a red car and then ALL you see driving by and passing you on the freeway is a red car.  The exact red car and model you just bought.

Today’s sign of kindness was spotted at Paperboat in Bellingham.

Jaynane and I were shopping and I spotted the BE KIND sign. “Look at this!” I shrieked with joy as I showed her the sign.

“Yes, but look at this.” She pointed to the sign next to it that read “I got it from my mama.”

“Even better.” I smiled.

Because it’s true. I got my kindness from my mama. And when I am not kind, I hear my mother’s voice in my head.

“Jamie.” She still says my name in only the way a mother can, even though she is somewhere so far away.

Kindness is a practice, I’m learning. It’s a practice that takes “practice.” Kindness also feels like a rubberband. You don’t realize you need to bounce back into the Kindness Zone until you get all stretched out to the other side. Maybe there are incredible super kind souls out there who never find themselves in that mean dark zone…but when I do, that’s when I hear my deceased mother’s voice.

“Jamie, be nice.” She says until my rubberband bounces back.

When those words hit my brain, I know that she isn’t telling me to be “NICE” as much as she is telling me to be a human being who respects others. Be the person who is compassionate, caring, empathetic and understanding. Not the one who is judgmental or snarky. Not the girl who is mean. Who is selfish. Who points and whines, who snaps and barks out of that deep dark place that doesn’t feel good enough. In those two simple words, she is telling me that I am enough and I need to stand up straight and start acting like it. In those two little words she is reminding me that I am loved and therefore I am expected to give love.

In other words. “Be Kind.”
I got it from my mama.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
