JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 21 :: signs of kindness

22 Jan

Be Nice.

Signs. Signs. Everywhere signs. Tonight, I am reminded that what we look for, we see. And what am I seeing? Signs of KINDNESS.

It’s like Red Car Syndrome. You know, the effect of buying a red car and then ALL you see driving by and passing you on the freeway is a red car.  The exact red car and model you just bought.

Today’s sign of kindness was spotted at Paperboat in Bellingham.

Jaynane and I were shopping and I spotted the BE KIND sign. “Look at this!” I shrieked with joy as I showed her the sign.

“Yes, but look at this.” She pointed to the sign next to it that read “I got it from my mama.”

“Even better.” I smiled.

Because it’s true. I got my kindness from my mama. And when I am not kind, I hear my mother’s voice in my head.

“Jamie.” She still says my name in only the way a mother can, even though she is somewhere so far away.

Kindness is a practice, I’m learning. It’s a practice that takes “practice.” Kindness also feels like a rubberband. You don’t realize you need to bounce back into the Kindness Zone until you get all stretched out to the other side. Maybe there are incredible super kind souls out there who never find themselves in that mean dark zone…but when I do, that’s when I hear my deceased mother’s voice.

“Jamie, be nice.” She says until my rubberband bounces back.

When those words hit my brain, I know that she isn’t telling me to be “NICE” as much as she is telling me to be a human being who respects others. Be the person who is compassionate, caring, empathetic and understanding. Not the one who is judgmental or snarky. Not the girl who is mean. Who is selfish. Who points and whines, who snaps and barks out of that deep dark place that doesn’t feel good enough. In those two simple words, she is telling me that I am enough and I need to stand up straight and start acting like it. In those two little words she is reminding me that I am loved and therefore I am expected to give love.

In other words. “Be Kind.”
I got it from my mama.

More tomorrow.
