31 Jul

Day 3 on the train.

And just like that…. I am home. The trip is over. The adventure has led me back to where I began.

There are so many faces of the train.

  • The excited face.
  • The adventure has just begun face.
  • The amazing gawking look at that view face.
  • The sunset over the water wow face.
  • The coffee tastes so good in the morning face.
  • The I didn’t sleep a wink face.
  • The dinner on a train face.
  • The I can’t believe it’s almost over face.

So many faces. Here’s a few selfies from the road home.

So many moments.
So worth the adventure.
So kind in so many ways.

 JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 188 :: rich beauty

30 Jul

Day 2 on the train.

I love the train. I think it’s something that just gets in your blood. Tonight I had dinner with two older Australian gentlemen who are traveling the country visiting air shows. Last night I ran into the woman I boarded with originally in Chicago. She too had a layover  (trainover?) in Minneapolis and we found ourselves boarding the train again at the same time three days later.are

There’s so much that I love about the train. The people. The sights. The feeling of being slowly whisked across the country.

And I really love the dining car.

The food is not a gourmet spread but it’s really not too bad. Better than any airplane food I have ever had. And, to be honest, probably better than my own culinary creations at home.

It’s been almost 24 hours on the train for me. My hair is getting a little bit greasy. My legs a bit tired. But the trip is still an adventure. The sights are still making me sigh with awe and disbelief. The beauty is breathtaking.

It’s been a small gift of kindness to myself, to take the long way home. The slow train.

But so worth the richness and wonderment.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 187 :: farmers market beauty

29 Jul

The best kind of kindness.

I find shopping at the Farmers Market so very kind. It’s outside, the sun is usually shining, it’s summer. It is swathed in beauty. Even in another state, another city, another market… the beauty of nature abounds.

It is the kindest way I know to shop. Add to that good friends, a super sweet cinnamon roll… not to mention a flower that is bigger than your head…

And it makes for a pretty special day.

Full of food and fun.

Tonight I board the train again headed toward the coast. But I will not forget the KINDNESS that comes from visiting lifelong friends, eating really good food, listening to inspiring music and picking up right where we left off twenty years ago in college.

Friendship is indeed the language of kindness.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 186 :: 4-letter friday

28 Jul

Play on.

Tonight’s 4-letter Friday word is all about play.
It was a fun night in Minnesota. Great concert. Good times. And fun with friends.

The best kind of play is the kind that involves dear friends. Friends who know you and love you, and have been with you for all of life’s ups, downs, and arounds…. and still want to play.

Thank you Lisa, for a fun night in St. Paul. Your taste in music is impeccable.
Play on!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 185 :: going slow

26 Jul

Kindness is slow.

I’m sitting on the train and soaking in every moment of the rolling tracks. I have a strange fascination with train travel. It’s slow. But, as I sit here absorbing all the people and conversations around me, I realize it is so kind.

Slow but kind.

I wonder if there is a relationship between the two?

Kindness can be fast too, of course. But maybe the slow kind of kindness is the deep kind.

There is so much more kindness on a train than a plane. Like more leg room and bigger chairs that recline more than ¾ of an inch. But I think it goes deeper than that.

People talk on the train. To each other! They gather in the observation car. They read books. They play cards. They take photos of the scenery rolling by. They exchange email addresses. They treat each other like human beings.

Because they are being. Instead of waiting.

They are families. They are couples. They are singlets too. They are old men playing chess in the snack car. They are little boys playing Go Fish with their parents too. They are old ladies sharing their life stories with little 5-year girls, squealing at their shared love for Ed Sheeran.

There is a certain amount of kindness on the train, which I believe is really the act of seeing. And listening. To each other.

People listen on the train – to each other and to the conversations of others, as we all hear the creaking rails bumping along below. People look you in the eye on the train. They say “excuse me” as they walk through the hallways and pause to let you navigate the strange space in order to push open doors that connect adjoining cars.

They share their train stories too. Where they are going. Where they have been. The trains they have traveled, hope to travel, and most important, how long they have been on THIS train. It’s a competition of sorts. Who has been here the longest? Who has traveled where? And why?

There is something so very kind about the train, I am realizing.

Planes are fast. Trains are slow.
But sometimes slow can be good – for the body and soul.

All aboard.

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 184 :: fun

25 Jul

Kindness.

There is kindness in the pure joy of having fun. And today, I had a margarita in one of Chicago’s Mexican restaurants. It was pure fun.

There was also a sign above us that I thought said, Mexiful. Which I loved! What a brilliant word, I thought to myself. It’s like beautiful Mexico. It’s like the best of Mexican food meets beauty and grace. Mexiful!

And then we checked out and I walked around the corner to read the sign which actually said, MEXIFUN.

Aha… makes so much more sense. It was probably the margarita talking… but it was fun.
And Mexiful.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 183 :: kindness as a strategy

24 Jul

Thoughtful.

Someone said something today that perked up my ears… using kindness as a business strategy.

I know I am a little bit inclined to listen these days when someone says the word kindness. And, I am a little biased on the power of kindness too… but still, kindness as a business strategy is brilliant in my book.

It was said in the context of being better by doing better.It was meant as a way to grow by helping others grow first. For all our clients and our guests, and clientele. I like that concept. I think it is pretty powerful – and good. And is there a better combination than that?

The Strategy of Kindness.
How can you implement it into your life?

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 182 :: listening

23 Jul

Kindness.

I’m learning kindness is so much about listening. So, in this year of intentional acts of kindness – to myself and others – I am not surprised that the most powerful act of kindness is actually free.

It’s amazing what you hear when you Listen.

 JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 181 :: beauty rest

22 Jul

Kindness.

I’m doing a kind thing tonight… going to sleep. It seems so simple but it hasn’t been a very good two nights so far in Chicago sleep time.

I’m a bit time-zoned and haven’t been able to fall asleep… so tonight I am counting sheep, and my dreams, and looking forward to waking up to sunny Chicagoland tomorrow.

Afterall, you have to sleep to dream.
Night. Night. Kindness.

More tomorrow….

Jamie
