Treasures.
I shared the Whale Watch surprise yesterday, but what I didn’t share was this surprise:
It’s a pretty little piece, a necklace, pendant, beautiful treasure on the end of a chain. We spotted while in Friday Harbor.
I should have known something was up Justin’s sleeve when he kept pointing to jewelry in the shop cases and saying they were pretty. This was the one I reacted to the most, this pendant of coral in the shape of a tree. We left the store, upon many stores and I forgot about it.
Then, on the last hour home, as we sat on the boat and watched the water move by our window, I looked down at the table and saw a white box. It was a jewelry box.
“What’s that?” I looked at Justin who wore a sly grin on his face.
“I don’t know,” he said, “you should open it up and see.”
It was, of course, the pendant I had seen in the store in Friday Harbor much earlier in the day. He has done this to me before. And, as always, I seem to be clueless, never realizing what he is up to until it is too late (or just right, I suppose!).
It’s a beautiful little pendant. It reminds me of our date with the whales on a sunny Saturday afternoon – and a few islands in-between. But, most of all, it reminds of the young man I first met when we were seventeen and the sweet husband I have now married.
He has always had a gift for gifting and surprises. And it’s not limited to the kind of treasures I wear around my neck. He is so generous with his time and his thoughts for everyone he loves. Sometimes I wonder if all those around him see what I see — a mind which is constantly examining others and figuring out what they want and need and wish for most.
So in this year of kindness, I realize this — the best teacher of how to be kind has been right before my eyes, at my side, holding my hand and watching me with those very observant brown eyes.
What he has taught me most is this:
Sometimes the kindest act is just listening.
Listening to those you love.
And that is a treasure.
