JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 343 :: the game of bliss

13 Dec

Today’s bliss…flying.

As in time.
Time flies when you’re having fun. Something I am learning as I pay more attention to bliss. Time flies when you are in bliss too.

So today, I thought it ironic while playing the game of LIFE with my little nieces.

The game of course is really an APP. All electronic, fast-paced digital eye candy. There were no cards to draw or little people to place inside cars. It was a LIFE adventure that played out before your eyes on a screen.

How time flies. And how I could almost smell the mildew on my own board game of LIFE that I played as a child — (mostly because we left it out in the rain or some sort of soggy place). And how the world turns.

And so did this digital game of LIFE. Weddings. Babies. School. Homes. Jobs. Losing Jobs. Taxes owed. Wedding Gifts. Twins! Baby gifts. New Career. Twins again! And then before you know it, Retirement.

That’s how you “win” the game of LIFE. Retirement.

And it left a sour taste in my mouth. Just the word alone makes me cringe. As if you are supposed get all TIRED out. Or roll over and play dead until you actually do expire. Well, maybe we all do have an expiration date stamped somewhere on our foreheads. Invisible it is, which is maybe the best part of LIFE. The not knowing when our expiration date will arrive.

Which brings me to this. It’s the one year anniversary of my Aunt Denita’s exit date, or expiration, or whatever we call the passing on into the ether and divine. As I sit here tonight thinking about the game of LIFE all I can think is that Time Flies.

Even more reason to enjoy taking a spin, on the risky track or the safe track, or whatever track floats your boat (that you mortgage) but keep spinning I say. Don’t tire out before the expiration date arrives. because really, if there is anything I have learned in this Year of Bliss it is this:

Life is a game.
We call the shots.
So why not choose bliss?

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 342 :: blissful 80’s

12 Dec

Today’s bliss…bonsai!!

We watched The Karate Kid tonight. With a new Star Wars movie coming out next week and Christmas soon after we are in pure childhood memorabilia mode over here.

And The Karate Kid didn’t disappoint.

It wisked me back to a time of California Cool, beach-side fire pits and high school dances. Where the bad guys were defeated with Yoda-like mind control and few well timed karate kicks. A time that seems so much closer to the 1950’s (not that I would know) than today.

But then again, maybe that’s just a blissful memory. It’s so much easier to understand the past than to predict the future.

Bonsai Bliss.
Bonsai!!!

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 340 blissfully lost

10 Dec

Today’s bliss…darkness.

It gets dark early these days. We are in the depth of winter. And the nights can be so dark up here in the Northwest. Big sky. Big ocean. Deep darkness. Twinkling lights.

All of this I witnessed tonight while driving home from the grocery store. Because I got lost.

But there was so much I found. Including a college, a campus, a beautiful tree-lined street, a view from atop this mountain town …And Christmas lights. Soooo many Christmas lights!

And that reminds me to be calm in the moments where it feels like I am lost. To look up and enjoy the ride. And wait to see the lights.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 339 :: blissful bit parts

9 Dec

Today’s bliss…bit parts.

I recently heard an NPR interview with Harvey Keitel regarding his upcoming film “Youth”. Here’s the excerpt that held my attention:

SIMON: Your character has a line toward the end of the film. I won’t give away the circumstances. But the line’s been running around in my head for the past 24 hours. Your character tells Michael Caine’s character, I believe, we’re all extras.

KEITEL: I’m going to go to Stanislavski to help me with this answer, the great discoverer of the method, who said there were no small parts, only small actors. So an extra could be a misleading term. And my advice to any actor who’s playing, quote, unquote, “extra” to think of it more like Stanislavski did. It’s not a small part. You are the lead in the movie, in your own movie.

SIMON: Your own movie meaning your life?

KEITEL: That’s what I mean.
And it has me thinking. About life, parts, roles, and leading. Which leads me to bliss. Part of being blissful I’m learning is freedom. Part of bliss is being present. And part, I believe, is letting go of the ego, the one small part of me that tells stories and believes what other people say. Their review of your movie.

So, I’ll quote Dabbs Greer, a bit actor, who said, “Every character actor, in their own little sphere, is the lead.” It reminds me that we are all the lead in our life, and leaders of our own bliss.

And that is no small part.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 338 :: blissful doing

8 Dec

Today’s bliss…doing.

I close out tonight with the thought on my brain and a long list on my To Do list that is screaming… just do it. Just do it. Just do it. It, of course, is never done dear NIKE. But doing is half the battle.

Do. Be. Do. Be. Do.
Just do it.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 336 :: blissful party

6 Dec

Today’s bliss…a birthday party.

We spent the afternoon with our newly minted nine-year old niece. Nine. Years. Old. Nine!

She is one of the reasons why we moved north. To be close enough for soccer games and birthday parties. In a few short months we have accomplished both.

And the best part is that we are cherishing every moment. Because while you count everything from half birthdays to school years and summer days when you are nine, the reality is that time flies when you’re an aunt and uncle.

We know we have a short window of time to be present for all the amazingly blissful moments of being nine. Because then comes ten. And I know it’s just right around the corner.

Sometimes the best present of a birthday is Staying Present.
Carpe diem dear nine.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 335 :: blissful elves

5 Dec

That’s his elf-given name. And I am impressed with the amount of BLISS he brings to his house. The giggles. The surprises. The pointing. The laughter. The hiding places. Today he was hangin’ with the turtles.

That’s Ziggy.

It’s amazing what a story wrapped in a game folded into a tradition can do.
Pure Magic.
Pure Bliss.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 334 :: blissful happy

4 Dec

Today’s bliss…happy science.

In the year of Bliss, this by Steven Parton might just say it all. I found myself nodding to the science that explains all of my experiences with the lessons of Love and Happiness.

Bliss on.

More tomorrow.
