JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 365 :: dear 2014, it’s a peak performance wrap!

31 Dec

Oh boy, 2014, have you been a doozie! For a year of making a peak performance promise you certainly had a few surprises up your sleeve for me.

Let’s start with Perspective.
It’s fascinating isn’t it? How everything makes sense when you look back, reflect and take in where you have been. This post officially marks four years of posting, four years of blogging every single day.

One Thousand Four Hundred and Sixty One Blog Posts.
(In my head I’m singing that to the RENT song, five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes).

So here’s the year in review… in photos!

2014 started with joining a Gym!

And then celebrating my Thyroidless friends!

Then turning 40! (BEST. SURPRISE. PARTY. EVER!)

And then, Pup turned 13. Thirteen!

And then a new commitment to FOCUSING on BEAUTY, as I learned to enjoy simple beauty and pause right now (ESBPRN) to literally smell the roses:

And then, another surprise…. and another surprise surgery.

And then, a beach recovery with my own personal nurse and a lot of love:

And then a summer preparing for implants:

And then, a new commitment to Peak Performance… this time with Pilates:

And then, some amazing life-long friends reunited:

And then, some amazing work with some amazing women:

And then, an amazing get-on-with-your-life gift from Kim:

Where I practically coughed on Miss O:

After which, Justin and I saw another Peak Performance by Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell:

Followed by a Peak Performance by Mother Nature: (simple beauty!)

And then a peak performance from the garden which Justin turned into his signature salsa recipe:

And then, a personal peak performance — I FINALLY painted my table:  (Brady approved)

And then, in one of the most important moments of the year, I said hello again to my Great Aunt B and my large extended family, as we all said goodbye to my dear Aunt Denita.

And other family members too… like this one, Mr. Gibbs:

All in all, after a year of pursuing Peak Performance I am convinced of one thing and one thing only: to reach peak performance we need each other.

We will get through this and anything else life throws our way together.

It’s not just a note on top of my coffee cup. It’s the truth. We need each other. And I could not have made it this far without family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, coaches, medicine women, personal nurses, amazing doctors, patient pilates trainers, sisters, aunts, brothers, some amazingly loving dogs and YOU.

Let’s face it. Peak performance takes a village.

So this marks the moment in time where we all ask the question:  What’s Next?

And that’s what I find so amazing about The New Year. It’s like a master reset button. Sort of like a new school year, when I amassed a brand new wardrobe and reimagined who I would be, what classes I would take, what friends I would make… it’s kind of the unofficial adult do-over.

But there are some things that I do not want to do over. For instance: no more surgeries. But, I have to say, in the most ironic twists of fate ….my surgical incisions left me with two distinct scars. I now have two “swooshes” on my breasts, up and around my nipples. Seriously. It looks like NIKE branding right across my chest. How Peak Performance is that??

But alas…. let’s leave that in the past.
It’s time to DO SOMETHING!

On to 2015!  I will share my official, NEW promise for 2015 tomorrow.
Can’t wait! See you on the other side. Until then, enjoy simple beauty pause right now.

MUCH LOVE FROM ME TO YOU.
xoxoxoxoxo

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 363 :: short and sweet tonight

29 Dec

There’s a sore throat brewing inside of me so tonight is super short and sweet. Here’s to Zicam dreams. Hoping for some medicinal peak performance overnight.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 362 :: three days left

28 Dec

There’s only three days left in 2014. It’s hard to believe. Really? Three days? In some ways it’s gone by SO fast. In others, it’s crawling by moment by moment, scene by scene, minute by minute.

And that brings us to the door of 2015. It’s almost here. It has almost arrived. And yet, there’s still time to prepare to welcome the next year of our lives.

What will you do with the next year of your life?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 361 :: it’s not a hard knock life

27 Dec

You’re never fully dressed without a smile.

It’s good advice from a ten-year-old. And tonight as we bounced in our seats to the suite of songs from Annie (the reprise) which as much as I loved it just couldn’t come close to the original, I couldn’t help the singing in my head.

And then singing out loud after the movie.
And then singing in the kitchen when we arrived home.
And then singing in the bathroom.
And on and on and on…

It’s a hard knock life for us. It’s a hard knock life for us!

I think about all the hard knocks I’ve had in this year of peak performance. A surprise diagnosis on my way to a fertility check-up that led me down a path very far away from the pregnancy one I thought I was taking. Then two surgeries that wiped out my former understanding of fear. On to three saline fills that stretched the skin on my chest and my pain tolerance. And, of course, all the real life moments that happened in between. (And the ones that didn’t, like the laundry. It’s always the first thing to go!)

It’s a hard knock life for us.
And yet, it SO isn’t.

If my OB didn’t find that lump, they wouldn’t have found the calcifications. The lump was nothing. The calcification was DCIS.

If the radiologist had not detected the DCIS I wouldn’t have called the surgeon. If the first surgeon’s office had called me back in time I wouldn’t have freaked out and called my thyroid surgeon, who led me to my breast surgeon. If I hadn’t talked to my new breast surgeon who had other patients with my same background and medical history, I wouldn’t have been advised to have a double mastectomy (what???!!!).

And if I didn’t have the double mastectomy they would’t have found the DCIS cells on the right side too, which were undetected by all technology imaginable, and three times larger based on the final pathology.

I’m a lucky girl.

And of course, it’s easy to say now, with hindsight, looking back and seeing the big, beautiful thread that ties every single life moment together. Including the new bras I received today from Macy’s (thank you Jaynane for the early birthday gift!). Buying bras has never been so complicated (turns out a 32DD is pretty hard to find and yet, never so much fun. Not since my Mama Sling took me shopping for my first bras have I had the motherly help, like today where Jaynane went on the hunt and kept handing me a plethora of bras over the top of the changing room door.

As I tried on every single style in the Macy’s lingerie collection, it struck me that the moment was more than special. My other Mama, Jaynane, has picked up where my Mama Sling left off. Because no matter what age you are you’re never fully dressed without a smile… and a great fitting bra!

So it’s from sitting here where I can sing, it’s NOT a hard knock life.
It’s a mysteriously amazing beyond belief life.
You just have to wait the hard knocks out.

Because it’s nice to be on the other side.
And…. I think I’m gonna like it here.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

 {how are you lucky?}

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 360 :: keeping calm

26 Dec

I once had a favorite coffee cup. It was bright red with white letters that spelled out:  “Keep Calm and Carry On.”  I carried it around with me from the Vineyard to Naples and back again.

And then it broke. I was devastated.

And now I have a replacement, thanks to a few Christmas Angels.

This time it reads:  “Don’t Tell Me To Keep Calm.”

Seems fitting. Really almost perfect in this year of peak performance.
(Thank you Nancy!)

If there is anything I have learned it is how to continue to carry on, even when the world turns upside down, wound around, throwing me on the ground and it’s utterly impossible to just keep calm.

Because it’s most important to carry on.
Carry on. Carry on. Carry on.
Even when you can’t keep calm.

And I’ll drink to that.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 359 :: repeat the sounding joy

25 Dec

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

Today is a day of celebration and this morning we were giddy to gather around the tree.  Not only was it a morning of “ooohs” and “ahhs” it was also the annual gathering of family in pajamas.

And the gifts!

The gifts were thoughtful, personal, meaningful and special in so many ways. Including a turtle. Yes, a turtle.

A turtle for an 8-year-old girl who was thrilled and over the moon to get her very own turtle, thank you Uncle Justin. (Her parents, not so thrilled. But no worries, turtles only live for like seventy years).

The best part? The peak performance part of the day? She has already trained her turtle to crawl on demand. Next, I’m sure, she will have it doing tricks like shake and high five.

I wasn’t sure a turtle was the most appropriate gift when the turtle first arrived. But now, seeing the glow in an eight-year-old’s eyes, the giggle with glee and the pure bliss in her voice, I’m convinced it was the most perfect Christmas gift ever. The one that will be remembered. The story that will be told, over and over again (maybe by her parents t00).

And that has me thinking…
Christmas brings out so many gifts. Some of the best are those that come from the heart of knowing what really matters to those who matter most.

Merry Christmas.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 355 :: twas the night before…

24 Dec

Peak performance moment of the day?  This.
Merry Christmas!!!!!

My aunt’s going to say that I phoned this one in, but there are two little girls who insist that Christmas morning start very early tomorrow.

So…. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 354 :: merry kindness

23 Dec

Peak performance moment of the day?  This pup.

He’s bigger than me. His name is Gibbs and he’s all puppy even though he is twice the size of my dogs. He’s my father’s standard poodle (read LARGE), which makes him kind of a brother-pup to me I guess.

Regardless, he has brightened this trip home with his energy, kindness, love and affection. And pure energy.  Note the blurry photo.

And that reminds me:
‘Tis the season to love more and share more affection along with gobs of human (or dog) kindness.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 353 :: beautiful life

22 Dec

Peak performance moment of the day: seeing my Great Aunt Beulah.

She’s ninety-five years old. Which is AMAZING to me. She’s still beautiful. Loving. And so special.

As my grandfather’s only living sister she has outlived them all.

I’m not sure Aunt B remembered me today, or even me as the little girl who collected golf balls in her backyard off the tenth tee of the golf course that was her backyard. But it doesn’t matter, because I remember her.

And today,  I loved holding Aunt B’s frail hand as she grasped onto mine. It wasn’t so much what we said to each other, it was more about holding a moment together in our hands, as her fingers gripped mine. I didn’t want to let go and it felt like she didn’t either.

Which brings me back to peak performance and living a long, beautiful life.
Ninety-five years old never looked so beautiful to me.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
