JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 2 :: kind of a kickoff

2 Jan

Oh, January!

It’s an official KIND of day. The first real day of my promise in action. It’s KIND of like learning to ride a bike. Or ice skate. Or surf. I feel like I’m falling or at least teetering a bit. It’s the first day of taking the training wheels off and having to put the pedal to the metal.

I had to stop myself from doing yoga tonight. Out of habit. Well, I really didn’t STOP doing yoga but I found myself on the floor stretching thinking that I had DONE it! Check, Check! Promise for Day One, DONE.

That was so last year.

So now I find myself wondering what kindness is… I mean, I KNOW what it feels like. I especially know what it feels like when I am NOT being kind. But how do you put acton behind your kind thoughts? And be proactively kind. In a way that you can check it off the box for a day’s promise well done?

I’m not sure yet. Send me thoughts if you have some.

So, today, I reverted to what I do know about kindness. Sharing. I shared a Daily Planner that I have been perfecting for a year now for myself. It’s simple. It’s easy. And I shared it with some of my women friends.

And guess what?! Tomorrow…I am going to share it with YOU!
See you tomorrow kind soul.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – YOGA DAY 1 :: a new kind of year

1 Jan

Day 1: Being Kind.

And here we go!  It’s a New Year. And with that comes a new promise. So… here we are:  2017 will be my Intentional Acts of Kindness Promise. It’s kind of like Random of Acts of Kindness but with more purpose.

After last year’s “Year of Yoga” and learning the depth of kindness, AND witnessing all the events of the world around me, I am dedicating 2017 to Kindness. I think we all need it, and I have a few people to thank.

1. Diane: yes, you! Diane could be my mother or grandmother. She is older but WISER in so many ways. Diane writes to me almost every day sharing what she read on my blog and what that means in her life. She has been reminding me of the power of 4-letter words for a few years now. Her best 4-letter word is, you guessed it, “KIND” and she kindly reminds me of this in her daily emails. Diane – this year is dedicated to you!

2. Amy: my dear friend Amy has been inspiring me with her message of kindness for years now. She is a teacher of joy and kindness. She is a high vibrational friend, one who lives from the heart. Check her out here. Amy – yes, this is also inspired by you too!

3. Feng Shui! I have spent the last three days “fenging” our space if you will. Furniture has moved, the energy is changing, the intentions are in place. Broken items have been thrown out, burnt out light bulbs have been replaced, and most important — intentions have been made. And now I begin 2017 with intentions in my heart.

So here we are again at Day One.
2017 will be a year of Intentional Acts of Kindness. I have no idea where it will take me. I have no idea what will happen, but my intention is to be kind, to you, to me, to those who present themselves in need. Kindness is not just a matter of being nice or patient, sometimes it is listening, sometimes it’s knowing when to say no, sometimes it’s an act of courage, sometimes it is just a shared moment.

Whatever Kindness has in store… I’m about to find out.
What does KINDNESS mean to you?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 366 :: it’s been a year of yoga

31 Dec

Day 366: 2016.

One. Big. Year. Doing yoga every damn day! Even on trains. And planes. Here’s how this crazy year unfolded…

From trains to the “plains” I saw landscapes that took my breath away. Thank you, Amtrak! What an amazing adventure, doing yoga on a train can be:

I did yoga on planes too: (Thank you Southwest Airlines)

I did yoga near the water:

And amongst the tulips too:

Then I did yoga on top of mountains. And I mean… REALLY big mountains.
(Who knew I lived so close to these majestic wonders? Than you Stacy!)

From Denver to Dallas, and Illinois to Arizona, I did yoga on the road:

And inside the depth of canyons at Lake Powell:

I had yogi friends come and visit!

And had lots of fun with my favorite little yogis too!

Pup did yoga in my suitcase:

Brady did yoga on my dresser:

Both of them turned into little yogi knots under blankets:

I spotted a starfish doing yoga on the shore:

I bought a pair of (gasp!) Birkenstocks fit for a yogi… (they really are comfy):

And I did glow in the dark yoga on Halloween!

All year long, I learned so much more from my resident Yogi expert, Jill:

But mostly I did yoga at home. In my office. On the floor. With my mat. And usually a dog nearby. This is what I have come to believe is the true sign of a dedicated yogi — the ability to do yoga anywhere. Under any circumstances. In any place. Any time.

Even if it’s taking a deep breath. One after the other.

And from all of that I learned this: to be gentler and kinder to my zen self. I did not lose weight, I did not turn into a yoga superpower, I did not even do a headstand. But I did do this: chilled the freak out.

In fact, I feel so full of zen-ness I kind of want to go hit a ball. No, seriously. After all this yoga my body wants to play. To play a game with other people where we all go after a shared goal with a ball (and maybe a racket and cute skirt?). And, yes, to smack the hell out of that tennis ball would feel really nice. I have no idea why? Just sounds like fun.

But seriously…. I have learned so much from this year of twists and turns. Mostly, it has reinforced the fact that you CAN do anything. Even yoga – every single day – for a year.

Sometimes it’s not your best, something it’s your worst. And sometimes it’s amazingly powerful. You learn your body can do more than you ever dreamed (CROW!) even though it’s less than what all those perfect yogi people do in all the magazines. You CAN do more than you think. You just have to keep trying.

You just have to show up.

SHOW UP!
That’s the magic of any promise, or intention, or wish. My wish for you is that this New Year brings you all of your desires and hopes  …and more.

Tomorrow is 2017 and I will be back. Oh, my dear Lord, I can’t believe I’m saying this… But yes, a New Year starts tomorrow and I’ve got a New Promise — do you? (I will share mine tomorrow, right here on this blog.)

Namaste, Yoga Every Damn Day. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

Day 365: One more day.

Gratitude: this year we get one more day. One. More. Day!

What will you do with your one more day?
I will be doing YOGA of course…and laundry…but I will be on the lookout for something special for this extra bonus day this year.

I mean, hey, if you didn’t use it up on February 29th, why not take advantage on December 31??

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 364 :: a year of yoga pants

29 Dec

Day 364: For real.

If this were a regular year, tomorrow would be the last day of my yoga promise. It would be my last required yoga practice. But since it’s a leap year there are two more days to go. Extra credit? Maybe. More trickery from 2016? Probably.

I am in full-on reflection mode. It’s what happens at this time of year, maybe you are too? As you look back and zoom forward seeing all that is in your past and what is in your path ahead.

Looking back, I see a year of yoga pants. Lots of yoga pants. And stretchy fitting yoga tops. I have practically lived in my yoga clothes this year, waiting for the moment I will surrender to my daily practice.

Leaping forward, I don’t see that changing. I will probably still be in yoga pants every damn day. It’s the “jeans” of our generation. It’s the uniform of choice. And quite frankly they are downright comfy soft chic. Yes, that’s a thing.

Looking back, I also realize that I have both loved and loathed my yoga practice. It has been opening and softening. It has been painful and pressure packed. It has been easy and graceful. It’s amazing how the same thing can be so different from day to day. Just goes to show how much can change in one day.

Zooming forward, I’m wondering how much can change in one year. I’m never the same person on Day 365 as I was on Day 1. It’s how this process works. I should know that by now. But it always surprises me. Will I do yoga in the future? Hell yes. Will I do it everyday. Maybe. Maybe not. Will it change over time. Oh, yes.

And that is the power of a promise. We don’t see all the little changes that add up day to day. But when we look at all of them over the journey of a year we see magic. Powerful magic.

And lots of yoga pants.
Namaste, Yoga Pants. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 363 :: giving it all

28 Dec

Day 363: You’ve Got.

Well, 2016…. my, my, my. So many surprises. Today we send off Debbie Reynolds. I was touched by this quote I found of hers:

“I gave it all that I had, and it’s gratifying that others seem to be receiving it so well.”
-DEBBIE REYNOLDS

It seems fitting in so many ways. And it has me asking myself the same thing. Have I given it all that I had?

Have you?

This year was a year of yoga for me. And did I give it all I’ve got? Hum… I’m not sure. I certainly know I gave in to yoga each day. But did I give it all? Not sure how to measure that.

I know I failed at the Yoga Shred. But at least I started and learned and gained more knowledge. Christmas kind of landed in the middle of it, so it took a break.

I know I blogged every single day. And that, my dear, feels like the real win here. But did I give it ALL I’ve got? Not sure. Sometimes I admittedly phoned it in.

And that brings me to this: Showing Up.

I believe in showing up. I believe in doing my best. I believe in being present. I believe in trying my hardest. I’m not sure I string each of those elements together every single day but I show up. I show up. I show up.

And that, it seems, is giving it my best shot. And, truly where the magic happens.

Namaste, Showing Up. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 362 :: for carrie

27 Dec

Day 361: 2016.

Well, 2016. You are going out with a bang aren’t you?

Bon voyage, Carrie Fisher.

Feels like I just saw you last night at the movie theater. And, I did due to some pretty amazing CGI.

And so, 2016, you continue to be full of surprises. All the more reason for us to focus on what matters most. I will be focusing on yoga for a few more days and then…. on to the next promise!

What will 2017 bring you?
What are you focusing on?
What is your NEXT new year going to be all about?

Namaste, Surprises. Namaste.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 361 :: going rogue

26 Dec

Day 361: One.

Da da daaaa da, da da daaaa da, da, daaaa, da, da, da…..
Tonight we went rogue.

Rogue One.

It was so good. So good! So good! (you can say that Fenway Park-style if you know what I mean).

It may not be the best Star Wars ever made but it was certainly a trip worth taking. I think what I appreciate most of all is the joy of feeling like a kid again watching the big screen with our now extended family of little nieces. I think we were all wide-eyed and curious. It’s the kind of thing Christmas Break is made of.

Speaking of Christmas Break there will be no Yoga Shred tonight either! Oy vey, I’m on a roll! But there was downward dogging and stretching and yoga all the same. Because I may be not be shredding but the force still runs strong in this one.

And…if you wish, you can still join the Shred course here.
Namaste, Force. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 360 :: pretty christmas

25 Dec

Day 360: Morning.

Another Christmas is in the books. This one came with a snowy mountain sunrise scene (with coffee) and many gifts.

Amongst the shiny things and tech toys and warm and fuzzies, the best gift was being together.

After a year of yoga (almost) I have learned a few things about myself and how far I can stretch. So tonight, it is with great awareness that I say… I’m not shredding tonight! Just a few yoga stretches of the Christmas kind. And I’m okay with that because what was I thinking doing the Yoga Shred over Christmas???

And…if you wish, you can still join the Shred course here.
Namaste, Gifts. Namaste.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 359 :: letters to santa

24 Dec

Day 359: And Whitney.
It’s Christmas Eve. And I’m loving the letters to Santa.

And the records we are playing from days gone by — Huey Louis and The New, Lionel Richie, Footloose, Whitney Houston.

We just woke up all the kids. Because we adults are being too loud. There is a little wine involved – but it at least has 13 essential minerals – so Merry Christmas everyone!

No Yoga Shred tonight! But there will be a downward dog or two.
You can still join the Shred course here.
Namaste, Christmas Eve. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
