JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 322 :: happy thankfulness

24 Nov

Day 322: To family.

Tonight, at dinner, we went around the table saying what we were thankful for — there were so many good things. So many reasons to be thankful.

A beautiful table, some of the most amazing people I know, and of course my mother’s rolls.  I am thankful I have her recipe even though I no longer have her sitting at the table with me.

And tonight, I was thankful she didn’t see (or taste) the mess of rolls of that recipe my hands made. In so many ways, it makes me appreciate her more. The things she could do that I can’t quite master. It keeps me on my toes. My blessed, thankful, newly pedicured toes.

Those are my favorite presents of Thanksgiving. The memories and the moments with family. Those who are sitting with us at the table and those who are sitting with us in our hearts.

Namaste, Rolls. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 218 :: graceful

15 Aug

Day 218: Oh, Deer.

We had visitors in the yard today. Through the parking lot, up the hill, two little deer. At first, I thought one was Brady. They look similar in a way. Except these deer are a bit more graceful.

Deers symbolize Grace.
And, that’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. Grace under pressure. Grace and ease. Ease and Grace.

It’s a beautiful thing. To gently leap through life with grace.
That is quite possibly the message this yoga promise is trying to teach me.

Easy does it.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 64 :: bloomin’ and breathing

5 Mar

Day 64. Bloom!

We may have given up our garden with our move North… but I still love capturing the beauty of Spring flowers. So tonight, I share these from Jaynane’s garden.

I realize I am also witnessing two other little flowers bloom and grow as well, in the form of our little nieces. These girls are blooming right before my eyes.

Yoga is teaching me to breathe. And breathing is teaching me to take in each and every moment, even the ones that seem to be going way …too …fast.

Bloom. Bloom. Bloom.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 60 :: falling in love

1 Mar

Day 60. Back in the saddle.

There’s something I am learning about this yoga promise… connection. It’s Day 60 and I’m starting to feel the connection.

To my mat.

It’s a power of connection to that very simple thing, a piece of rolled up plastic that sometimes smells like tires and sometimes smells like sweat. But I am learning to love that smell.

In the same way I loved the smell of a wooden floor and everything that came with it. Like the echo the bounce of a basketball made across the walls of an expansive gym, reserved for the first person to show up to practice.

Or the feel of athletic tape crisscrossing around my ankles. Sure it was nasty at the end of practice, needing to be cut out with a pair of special scissors stuck down into the pools of sweaty tape…But it was an extra layer of support to do what I loved to do…dribble, aim, shoot.

And, now it seems, so goes my mat.

It is becoming an extension of my body. It is actually turning into an object of affection and reflection. A small slice of a safe haven standing at attention in the corner of my office, ready to be unrolled whenever my body (or heart, or mind, or soul) needs it.

It is starting to call my name.

And I know this feeling. I recognize this road. I have walked down it before. This is the first step of falling in love. I did it with a basketball once. It became a part of my heart. And now, it seems, I am falling again. This time for a mat.

I think I am finally glimpsing a piece of this yogi “thing” — it’s not about form, function, execution, perspiration, which way this hand goes and that foot folds.

I am starting to think it might just be about love.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S.. Yoga done!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 57 :: a lady in waiting

27 Feb

Day 57. Oh burger, oh boy.

I’m writing this blog post from the bathroom. Just in case…. I am a blogger in waiting. Waiting for tonight’s dinner of tex-mex burger to pass without full-on flu-like symptoms. (I hope.)

Waiting sucks. It’s always the hardest part. Whether it is a test result or a tryout. Waiting… waiting….waiting is a drain. But tonight the bathroom does seem like the most reflective place to write a post while waiting.

Because there is so much waiting that happens in a bathroom.

I have waited for things to pass and things to come in a bathroom. I have waited for eyes to dry and tears to stop falling in a bathroom. I have waited for my sister to let me in and I have waited for the perfect moment to let myself out of a bathroom. I have waited for my hair to dry, the stink to subside, the sink to drain.

I have waited for someone to bring me a new roll of toilet paper while sitting, waiting, dripping …and pleading at the top of my lungs.

As a child, I once waited for my mother to pick up the phone at her office, as I bounced up and down in the bathroom waiting for her advice about how to unlock the belt that clasp around my waist that with every pull became tighter.

I have also waited for the hot, soapy water to absorb into every cell of my body washing away the rest of the world so I could emerge anew and renewed.

So many things I have waited for in a bathroom…but this may be the first blog post I have waited to post from a bathroom.

I guess there is a first time for everything.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 47 :: eat your cake

17 Feb

Day 47. Happy, happy, yum, yum.

I think I ate an entire chocolate cake. All by myself.

Well, almost by myself. Justin assures me that he had, at least, one slice (so there’s hope in that!) but overall, I ate the cake. And in record time. I think I ate an entire chocolate cake between Valentine’s Day and today.

Cake was meant to be eaten, I’m sure of it (and can prove it apparently if you place one in front of me or in the near vicinity of a refrigerator in my kitchen it will disappear).

God made cake to be eaten. I’m sure of that too.

And that has me thinking… why can’t we have our “cake” and eat it too? Cake makes me happy. And I like being happy. There are other things that make me happy too… not all have icing on top, but certainly they are sweet (puppies, babies, walks in the forest, spotting heart rocks that the ocean tide left behind, flowers, beautiful things… and now, yoga!).

Oh, there is so much CAKE.
So… here’s to cake!
And enjoying it too.

And if you don’t like cake (by the way, who doesn’t?) and want other, lower calorie ways to be happy and symbolically eat your cake, you can read this.

Yum. Yum.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 46 :: more play, less serious

16 Feb

Day 46. Looking differently.

I had an epiphany the other night. Mostly because Justin told me to pick up my toys. He was pointing at my yoga mats, the ones we had just used to do yoga. He was also kidding, making a joke, and trying to make me laugh.

But the more I thought about it, I realized, he was right!
Toys. Fun. Games. Yoga!

Aha!

And then I started thinking… what if I just had more fun? More play? Less intent and serious stretching. What if I just thought of my yoga mat as getting out my toys? What fun. What joy. What if?

And so… I wonder… what if we could just make everything more fun by just looking at things differently?
