31 Jul

Day 3 on the train.

And just like that…. I am home. The trip is over. The adventure has led me back to where I began.

There are so many faces of the train.

  • The excited face.
  • The adventure has just begun face.
  • The amazing gawking look at that view face.
  • The sunset over the water wow face.
  • The coffee tastes so good in the morning face.
  • The I didn’t sleep a wink face.
  • The dinner on a train face.
  • The I can’t believe it’s almost over face.

So many faces. Here’s a few selfies from the road home.

So many moments.
So worth the adventure.
So kind in so many ways.

 JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 188 :: rich beauty

30 Jul

Day 2 on the train.

I love the train. I think it’s something that just gets in your blood. Tonight I had dinner with two older Australian gentlemen who are traveling the country visiting air shows. Last night I ran into the woman I boarded with originally in Chicago. She too had a layover  (trainover?) in Minneapolis and we found ourselves boarding the train again at the same time three days later.are

There’s so much that I love about the train. The people. The sights. The feeling of being slowly whisked across the country.

And I really love the dining car.

The food is not a gourmet spread but it’s really not too bad. Better than any airplane food I have ever had. And, to be honest, probably better than my own culinary creations at home.

It’s been almost 24 hours on the train for me. My hair is getting a little bit greasy. My legs a bit tired. But the trip is still an adventure. The sights are still making me sigh with awe and disbelief. The beauty is breathtaking.

It’s been a small gift of kindness to myself, to take the long way home. The slow train.

But so worth the richness and wonderment.

More tomorrow….

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 185 :: going slow

26 Jul

Kindness is slow.

I’m sitting on the train and soaking in every moment of the rolling tracks. I have a strange fascination with train travel. It’s slow. But, as I sit here absorbing all the people and conversations around me, I realize it is so kind.

Slow but kind.

I wonder if there is a relationship between the two?

Kindness can be fast too, of course. But maybe the slow kind of kindness is the deep kind.

There is so much more kindness on a train than a plane. Like more leg room and bigger chairs that recline more than ¾ of an inch. But I think it goes deeper than that.

People talk on the train. To each other! They gather in the observation car. They read books. They play cards. They take photos of the scenery rolling by. They exchange email addresses. They treat each other like human beings.

Because they are being. Instead of waiting.

They are families. They are couples. They are singlets too. They are old men playing chess in the snack car. They are little boys playing Go Fish with their parents too. They are old ladies sharing their life stories with little 5-year girls, squealing at their shared love for Ed Sheeran.

There is a certain amount of kindness on the train, which I believe is really the act of seeing. And listening. To each other.

People listen on the train – to each other and to the conversations of others, as we all hear the creaking rails bumping along below. People look you in the eye on the train. They say “excuse me” as they walk through the hallways and pause to let you navigate the strange space in order to push open doors that connect adjoining cars.

They share their train stories too. Where they are going. Where they have been. The trains they have traveled, hope to travel, and most important, how long they have been on THIS train. It’s a competition of sorts. Who has been here the longest? Who has traveled where? And why?

There is something so very kind about the train, I am realizing.

Planes are fast. Trains are slow.
But sometimes slow can be good – for the body and soul.

All aboard.

More tomorrow….
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 93 :: a trip in time

Day 93: time warp

I have arrived in Chicago. And the Empire Builder was all it promised to be… scenic, insightful, beautiful, three-days long.

I met some really nice Americans, from all sorts of lives, with all types of stories and different destinations. But we all seemed to have one thing in common — taking photos all along the way.

From a Bellingham departure:

to the shores of Seattle…

To the Emerald Green Rivers of Montana

To Summits and Ski Towns and Sunrises:

To Glacier National Forest:

To moments like this:

To the wide open North Dakota fields:

To waking up in a Twin Cities Sunrise:

To crossing the Mississippi River:

To waving at Milwaukee:

To finally winding our way into the Windy City:

To remembering that sometimes you just have to see with your own eyes what a picture just cannot capture:

It’s hard for me to believe that people – real people – laid down the track that can take trains all across this nation (and I only went halfway!).

Sure, I ended up a bit sticky and couldn’t wait to take a shower. And, yes, there was a crying baby who made people slightly miserable for a few moments two nights in a row. And, of course, there were times when I just couldn’t find the right spot to get comfortable.

But I suppose all that comes with the time warp of train travel. It was enough to stretch my mind, to spin it out of my normal everyday life, to see something new, or something newly different. New views lead to new ideas. And that alone is well worth the trip.

And now I must stretch that other promise I made this year — it’s time for me to do some yoga!

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 92 :: stretching

2 Apr

Day 92: stretch

I have internet for a second… so… here’s the report for today.

I woke up to the sunrise over Montana. Then greeted with a show from Mother Nature, all the way from Whitefish, Montana through Glacier National Forrest. It’s breathtaking. I couldn’t stop taking photos.

Then, as soon as we winded down the mountain grade the badlands began to appear. We’ve been in this great expanse ever since. Watching oil fields and dried up shanty towns pass us by. Then there were the cows and the hay. It is the great swath of the American Midwest. It reminds me of Texas in many ways, but there are no hills here.

My hair is a little greasy but I don’t think I smell…yet. I keep making trips to the bathroom to wash my face and run sweet smelling lotion into my skin. Next time I would do a sleeping car with shower but for now I’m still happy and enjoying the scenery. No one is sitting next to me so no harm no foul.

I’m sort of learning to love my little cubbyhole of a seat, like I’ve finally figured out where all my stuff goes when I need it. Water bottle. Computer. Blanket. Pillow.

I’ve also figured out where to do yoga. In the ladies “lounge” an extra large bathroom with a double sink and sitting area. The perfect place to escape for a little stretching and Namaste.

Hey, Amtrak – here’s an idea. Add another car to the train for yoga classes. Everyone needs to stretch on these long trips and everyone is already in yoga pants and sweats (and you could charge for classes – new revenue stream….).

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 91 :: journeying

Day 91: standing out.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with… the train.

I’m on the Amtrak headed to Chicago. And I feel like a little girl on an adventure.

The little boy sitting behind me with his grandmother keeps screaming with joy.
“The horn! The train! That’s the exchange! It’s a container train. Look, Santa Fe! I love Amtrak!”

And it’s totally okay. The train is so social.

The woman in front of me decided to travel the nation after her husband died.

I met a couple at the train station that gave me all the tips I need (Bank of America credit card earns you extra points) to travel on the Amtrak rewards program (their trip was free!)

We just passed what looks like an abandoned shipwreck. Puget Sound is on my left. The Cascades are in the distance. And inside the little voice in my head is saying:

“The horn! The train! That’s the exchange! It’s a container train. Look, Santa Fe! I love Amtrak!”

I have no idea when I will lose phone signal to post to my blog so I’m posting now. Even there is so much ahead of me on this trip. And, while the view is gorgeous, I realize in forty hours I might be really over it… but until then I’m enjoying the view.  We haven’t left the coast of Washington yet and the Rockies are still to come. Washington, Idaho, Montana, and more… all the way to Illinois.

And now, I’m trying to figure out where I’m going to do yoga tonight on this train. Head yoga. Feet yoga. Should yoga?

More on that tomorrow.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 212 :: travel choices

6 Aug
Travel day #1. Train day. Delay.

We still haven’t arrived at our final destination but it all has me thinking about bliss and coincidence.

Since this year is all about BLISS I’m having a hard timing forming words around my day. The train I am riding hit someone. It was quite abrupt, the delay has been long, and it was both shocking and incredibly sad.

More than anything it’s a reminder that choices matter. So tonight I’m dwelling on my own choices. I chose to take this trip north in order to see friends and family. Tonight I will be staying with one of my college roommates. Which brings me heaps of bliss!

And isn’t that the bliss we control?  Who we spend our time with, who we share moments, space and memories with on this road called life.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 164 :: chambers bay bliss

18 Jun
The US Open has begun.

I feel like we had a glimpse from the train as we passed by Chambers Bay the other day.

Grand stands on one side. Ocean on the other. Links in between. In pursuit of excellence.

And bliss goes to the victor. We’ll be watching!

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 163 :: train photos and visual bliss

17 Jun
Just some photos (as promised!) from my train ride yesterday…

And not to be left out… the smallest train station I have ever seen!

Over fields, over mountains, over the sea…

It was visual bliss!

More tomorrow.
