BLOG – GIFT DAY 351 :: a week till christmas eve

17 Dec

The year is winding down and the holidays are gearing up!

And today I wrote my first of three Card Crusade cards.

Since I sent so many cards this summer I have been thinking very deeply about who will be my “three” people to thank this holiday.

And, after much head throbbing I finally figured it out!

I will send cards to people who I feel have:

  • inspired me
  • helped me
  • believed in me

That is my criteria. And believe me it’s HARD to whittle it down to just three, but I want to make sure my three receive super-meaningful cards and the proper thanks for all they have done for me.

The interesting thing is this:  it has bled over to my regular holiday cards.

Just being mindful about how three people have impacted my life has made me more thoughtful to each person I send a holiday greeting.

It’s powerful, this gratitude thing.
So today, my gift is a card. A very thoughtful, heartfelt, deeply thankful one.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 226 :: friday flashback: when life knocks you on your keister…

16 Aug
How was your week?
Did you learn anything new?  Any aha moments?  New ideas?  Lessons learned?I had an incredible trip to Chicago this week. And it was a good timing for a few reasons. For one, it was a nice distraction from this upcoming surgery that is quite honestly just taking up too much of my heart and soul.

Plus, it was a good reminder that even when life knocks your on your keister, there is so much good, so much beauty, so many amazingly grand moments to share and things to see.

And people.

You know, I learned a long time ago that it is the people who matter most in our lives.

Right after I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, at age seventeen, I sat on the sidewalk with my best friend Kari. She cried, I consoled her, and then I had an epiphany — “it’s the people in our lives that matter the most.”

It’s always about the people.

I was reminded of this in Chicago too. From the incredible people I am blessed to work with at Bottle & Bottega and Green Ink Gallery, to my friend Gail who I met for coffee, and my art institute partner in fashion, Debby.

It’s always about the people.

And that’s what brought me home, flying high I might add, right above the Pacific Northwest — our new home — where I was greeted with hugs and puppy licks and a garden that has overgrown it’s fence line.

And, then, there is the gifts.

I received an incredible offering of love in the mail this week.  From the bracelet that I absolutely adore (thank you Ellen!) to the pillow that I cannot wait to hug (thank you Debby!) to the cards that melt my heart (thank you Carrie and Jaynane).

They are each more than “gifts” — they are a reminder of the PEOPLE who I love and adore.

Because it’s always about the people.

When life knocks you on your “keister” as one of the cards remarks — keep your eyes on the sky.

And I would like to add — keep your people in your heart.

Here’s to you and your people.

More tomorrow.

Yesterday’s card went out to Sofia…. as in Sofia Vergara. As I wrote about on Day 218 Sofia’s story inspired me to keep going fearlessly to do this upcoming surgery. So, why not send her a thank you note!?

BLOG – GIFT DAY 217 :: thank you chocolate

5 Aug
Who did you thank today?I ask because I am finding this Card Crusade so enlightening. It has made me so much more focused on being a giver instead of a taker.

Today, as I practiced my giving muscle, I sent my card for yesterday (since it was Sunday) and wrote out a new one for today. Yesterday’s card went out to my dear friend Amy, who has been like a soul-sister to me. And today’s card is going to a yogi I adore.

A few days ago I received this fun gift in the mail.

And, yes, I was happy to be a taker!!

Thank you Kelly, I loved the surprise.
And, yes, the chocolate was melted when it arrived (but nothing a freezer can’t fix!). While it did melt it still tasted SO GOOD!

Even more important, the gift melted my heart.

It’s not any ordinary chocolate bar. It comes with a love poem inside.  And since chocolate gives off the power of love and that all over warm feeling (apparently the flavanols in chocolate increase blood flow) I have to admit, I love it.

But, you know what I LOVE more…..
Sending cards out to people I care about. There just aren’t enough cards or days to tackle that one, but I am trying one day at a time.

And, I encourage you to reach out to ones you love as well.

  • Slip a card in your hubby’s lunch
  • Hide a card under your child’s pillow
  • Stick a card on your mother’s dashboard
  • Drop a note on your employee’s desk
It doesn’t take a lot to say thank you.
It really only takes two words (and maybe some chocolate love!).More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 215 :: it’s not easy being green… or yellow

3 Aug
How does your garden grow? Here I go, talking about our garden again…. I know, it’s becoming a habit. But I am just so impressed with what blooms, grows, sprouts from the earth.

Yesterday we pulled out a squash, a zucchini and something that looks like a squash/zucchini mashup.

We’ve been waiting for this striped thing to turn green… for weeks. We have stared at it. I have sung to it. We have checked on it everyday, hoping one of these days it will turn green.

It never happened.
So we pulled it.

Does anybody out there know what this is?

This process has reminded me of a classic mistake — expectations. Preconceived notions. Thoughts deeply planted in our minds about how things SHOULD be, SHOULD look, SHOULD act.

Instead of waiting and seeing, observing, watching, with new eyes it is so easy to compare, contrast and contain that which we expect to happen. In people, animals and plants.

So, here we are with a yellow-striped-zucchini-squash something. Instead of waiting for it to turn green, we have finally let it be what color it wants to be.

Sometimes it’s not easy being green (or yellow). Just ask Kermit… and I think his last line says it best — no matter *what* it is that we are:

“It’s beautiful, and I think it’s what I want to be.”

More tomorrow.

P.P.S. Yesterday’s card was mailed out to Ellen Hood of Massachusetts – it’s on it’s way!  And today’s card is also traveling to the East Coast, to someone who was so thoughtful to send us a card when we first moved into our Oregon abode… that’s your hint!

BLOG – GIFT DAY 207 :: flashback friday

26 Jul
It’s flashback friday. Which means . . . the weekend is here!
What fun, fabulousness do you have planned? It’s been another hot week around here… just ask my panting co-workers, Brady and Pup:

But, the heat didn’t stop our first EGGPLANT from sprouting (proud mama!):

I designed and ordered a new t-shirt (with the saying that Justin came up with- thank you!!) and it will arrive before my surgery:

We successfully made it out of the house and went to the… wait for it… FAIR.

More cards have been delivered in the CARD CRUSADE.

But, probably the most expialidocius part of the week was what came in the mailbox from Diane and Kelly.

Including this super sweet care package from my college roomie, Laura, and her children. I couldn’t be more touched… in fact, I cried.

And this:

And these!

And, that is your hint for the day. Two little artists with hearts of gold received today’s card.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 206 :: how much time can gmail save you?

25 Jul
I love the internet.

There’s just one tiny problem.  I have no idea where people live!As I continue my Card Crusade, I realize I have been lackadaisical about keeping up with “real world” addresses. I mean, I have a spreadsheet…. it’s filled with addresses…. I just don’t think they are up-to-date.

In fact, I know some addresses have gone the way of the dinosaur.

Because email is so amazing… fast, cheap, personable, immediate.

Which brings me to this…. GMAIL.
I have been inundated with emails from “experts” all week. They are freaking out about the GMAIL tab changes. And, personally, I think it’s ridiculous.

Here’s my take: GMAIL made changes to help manage our collective big, full, email inbox. Tabs are meant to make it easier to manage our time. Who knows if it will work… but I applaud the effort.

We could all use more time management in this overwhelm of online social 24/7 media.

And that brings me to this. Yesterday’s card is still on my desk…
because I don’t have a current address! Humph. Such is twenty-first century life.

But, I can tell you this… today’s card is officially in the mail. It’s going out to someone who I ALWAYS know the address… as they say, “you can always go home.”

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 204 :: turning lemons into lemonade… or how to make surgery fun

23 Jul
We are one month out. Surgery officially begins in 30 days. And, I am determined to make it fun. So last week I designed and ordered this tee shirt.
It’s kind of silly for something so serious. But that’s why I love it.

My dear Mama Sling would always say, “If I have to be there, I might as well have fun.”

So in her brilliantly loving spirit, I say, “They took my thyroid and all I got was this awesome Tee Shirt!”

Of course it says “lovemore fearless” on it too. And that’s the funny thing about this promise, this journey, this adventure.

I made a promise to love more and fear less last year. And I made a promise to find abundance this year.

As it turns out I feel caught right in the middle, where love and fear and abundance intersect.

There is nothing more precious than health. And, for good health, I say, laugh more.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 203 :: are you a giver or a taker?

22 Jul
It’s a powerful question.I heard the question asked on a marketing webinar and it struck me deeply.

Are you a giver or a taker?

Of course, the speaker was talking about your business, but I have to admit, it reminded me of something I learned as a little girl: you get what you give.

It sounds so trite but it is so true. And, at the core of this promise I have made about abundance.

Today continues my Card Crusade and I officially ran out of stamps! Ironically, I also gained something today too (two things!).

Two cards arrived in the mail:

I adore these cards and the people who sent them. Thank you Kelly and Diane!

The more cards I send out, the more love I feel from giving and sharing and letting the people I adore know it.

Sure, it’s just a piece of paper when it’s all said and done (although these cards aren’t just any piece of paper!) — but it is also a powerful force of love — because the thought, which counts the most, goes unsaid too often.

Today I also mailed two cards (because yesterday was Sunday). The cards are going to two women who seem to be my light in times of darkness. One is like a sister, the other like an aunt with impeccable timing and incredible advice. One is a business dynamo, my confidant, my soul sister.  The other is a nurse, who sings in the choir and doesn’t like that Facebook keeps changing its format!

Both are mothers. Both are incredibly special women. Can you guess who?

So, what do you have to say or share?
What are you waiting for?

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 200 :: day 200! day 200! day 200!

19 Jul
It’s Day 200!!
Hard to believe. While this is year three of hitting Day 200 at this rodeo called BLOGGING EVERY SINGLE DAY, I have to say…

I still get a thrill from hitting these big numbers.

So let me just pause to say THANK YOU to all of you who are here.

Today, I continue my CARD CRUSADE.
My little way of saying thank you and spreading some abundance.

I just ran in from the mailbox. It’s so fun to send out these daily cards (it sure beats receiving all the medical bills that are arriving in the mailbox these days). And it is successfully creating a new relationship between me and that box out there on the sidewalk.

Today’s mailing has been sent!

The card is going out to two young boys who I love very much… they are small but have big hearts and even bigger dreams. They previously lived in Massachusetts, but not anymore.

Can you guess who?

While you ponder that one…let me tell you what’s fair.

I am so excited that we are actually leaving the confines of the little rental house we love and are going OUT.

Speaking of this house we adore — yesterday’s card was sent to the woman who helped us find it. Her name is Shay and she’s a realtor.

Way back in Scituate, Justin and I sat down and made a list of everything we wanted in our new house.

  • marble counters
  • a garden
  • three bedrooms
  • a yard for the dogs
And we found it, but not without Shay’s help. I originally spotted this house online but when I called it was already rented. Then, when we arrived in Oregon, I found it listed again. So I called Shay. She was the first friendly face in our new town. And, when I balked at the thought of living in a house where the fence was too low, and feared the dogs would jump out of the lawn, she found a way to make it work for us.

So, thank you Shay. We love our little house!

Now… on to the Jackson Country Fair
I can almost smell the cotton candy, hot dogs and the dust from the rodeo.

More tomorrow.
