JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 359 :: merry christmas

25 Dec
{miracles}

Happy holidays. Merry Christmas. And good tidings.

Today, we awoke to a little Christmas miracle. A blanket of snow. It was pristine and beautiful — and a surprise! Which reminds me of the power of miracles.

Last night at dinner we tracked Santa’s sleigh with an online App. We also discussed the weather and all wished to wake up to a white Christmas. We then watched Santa make stops in Bolivia and Costa Rice, Canada, the USA, and Mexico all on a phone held in our little hands while sitting at the dinner table (what a miracle!).

Then, this morning I awoke to Jaynane singing Christmas music from the living room and announcing, “It’s a White Christmas!”

I thought she was referring to the song. And, of course, the Christmas music wafting into our room. As I stumbled out into the living room in my pajamas she turned on the porch lights to show off the blanket of snow outside. It was a Christmas miracle – a snowclad world sparking outside.

We dreamt about it. We talked about it. And then we woke up to it. It may seem small but it was a magical way to greet the day. And it reminds me that Miracles can come in all forms.

Last I checked, Santa delivered 7,281,439,471 gifts around the world on this Christmas holiday. How kind of him. What a feat! A true miracle if you ask me.

Maybe the biggest miracle of all is remembering to believe.
In the power of loving each other.
Of being kind to those in our lives all year long.
And recognizing the magic in our everyday experiences.
Even when it’s just surprise snowflakes out the window.

That may be the kindest Christmas gift of all.

More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

{be}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

We decked the halls tonight. Football. Sunday. Church. Family. Games. Elf on a Shelf. Christmas Eve dinner. Tracking Santa’s sleigh on an app. Calling family.

It all makes for a beautiful tradition. And the kindest moment of all was just being there.

Tonight, in church, the pastor spoke of the importance of “being” is the kindest gift of all. The biggest gift we can share. The most we can possibly give to those we love.

And I agree.
So, here’s to being.
Thank you for being here. May you have a very Merry Christmas and beautiful holiday traditions.

What could be more kind?

More tomorrow…

Jamie

{counting}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

Tonight I baked. Again.

This time it was a sweet cake recipe from my alkaline cookbook:

But the really sweet part was sharing the baking process with Justin.  And laughing in the kitchen while trying a new recipe. Who knows how it will turn out?

The best part is figuring it out together.
And sharing….that is what counts most.
How kind.

Jamie

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

I baked tonight. Not the traditional Christmas assortment, more like the alkaline kind.

Chocolate Sweet Potato Brownies to be exact. I found the recipe on Chocolate Covered Katie. And I recommend it!  Sweet potato may sound weird, but they taste so good (and are good for you!).

Especially for someone like me who is trying to reduce the sugar in her life (again!) without losing the sweetness.

Afterall, sweetness is kind.

{wrap it up}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

We wrapped Christmas gifts tonight. As I was folding and cutting and taping paper I was also showing off a bit. I am a bit of a paper wrapper snob.

It goes way back to my junior high days when my youth group would wrap Christmas gifts in the local mall as a fundraiser. We wrapped the presents so everyone could take home perfectly wrapped gifts. They paid us money – and it raised funds for our initiatives. Win. Win.

I learned all the tricks of the trade in that booth. How to size up paper to match a box. How to fix a box when you ran out of paper. How to crease the corners and tie a bow to add that extra pizzazz.

So tonight, while wrapping gifts for our loved ones, I realized how KIND it is to fold paper for someone else. Really, it’s just as beautiful to wrap something up in a surprise box with all the love and perfectly creased corners, as it is to open up a gift from someone else.

‘Tis the season!
May your season be wrapped in kindness too.

Lovemore,
Jamie

{secret}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, laaaaaaa!

I received a Secret Sister email today. It asked for me to send a secret gift to a stranger. I immediately had a chain letter flashback from 1982. And just like then, it seems to be a silly little drill in getting people to give and get things from strangers. All hype. No hope. And probably pointless.

But, I decided to do it anyway. Why not!?

‘Tis the season. It’s also kind. And I couldn’t think of a better thing to do than to give a surprise gift to a stranger.

It is Christmas Kindness, after all.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 351 :: christmas kindness

18 Dec
{rock star}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

Last night, after spending days upon days in bed, I finally surfaced. I crawled out of that protective cocoon and faced the light of day. And the fact that I ran out of Gilmore Girls episodes…

Amidst it all, I also felt something new… Aches. All. Over. My body, bless its heart and soul, was done with being sick but still had some healing to do. I could barely move my shoulders with all the aches and pains and finally asked Justin if we had a heating pad… or something that could act like a heating pad. He’s good at finding things so whenever I need something I have learned to ask. To put Justin on the task.

He thought about it for a while and then, just when I thought he had forgotten he walked outside. In the mud and rain mind you. When he returned inside he had his hands full of rocks.

“What are those for?” I asked.
“For your back. I’m going to heat them up, like a hot rock massage.” He replied matter of factly.

Oh… My…  Love… he had me at hot rock massage. My most favorite spa treatment in the world. But could we do it at home?

Turns out, the answer is yes! Justin washed and heated the rocks and then placed them on my back. And then heated them up again for a second round. They weren’t perfect like the rocks I have had in spas … but it was perfectly timed.

It was so gloriously relaxing.
And he is so amazingly kind. A rock star in my book.

It’s times like these when I realize that for all the KINDNESS I have been trying to infuse into my life and others this year, all I really needed to do was open my eyes. Sometimes being kind is remembering to ask for help.

Because the helpers will show up.
Sometimes with rocks in their hands.

More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 350 :: christmas kindness

17 Dec
{dreams}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

It’s the fourth day in my pajamas. Winter colds are so cozy.  The only progress I have made in these last four days is with the Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

And with dreaming.

There are so many dreams that happen when you stay in your PJ’s for four days straight. I love what I learn in my dreams, and what they tell me, reveal to me, share with me and inspire me.

It all has me thinking about the rest and reset button.  One step back and two steps forward.

Dreams are kind.

{the season}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

As I push through this winter cold, I am reflecting on how important it is to be kind to others, to all, and to myself. This year is certainly teaching me to be more gentle.

Could there be anything more kind?

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 346 :: christmas kindness

13 Dec
{creating}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

And guess what?

I created a hat. All by myself! I’m so shocked and proud of this little warm and fuzzy. I feel like a little kid, bouncing up and down, screaming “I made it all by myself!”

Of course, I didn’t do it all by myself. There were a few other hands at play. My dear Mama Sling who so many years ago taught me how to crochet with my tiny fingers. And then, of course, my lovely friend Lauren who bought me the yarn and needle as a Christmas gift, and reminded me how to weave together the yarn.

It reminds me that we never really do anything alone. There are so many hands at play, for our higher good and happiness.

And that seems pretty kind to me.

More tomorrow…

Jamie
