Day 194: do you believe in ordinary miracles

13 Jul

It’s 4:30am.
The birds outside your window are tweeting incessantly (when I say “tweeting” I mean real, live, actual birds, not Twitter).

What do you do?

a) roll over with pillow pulled over your head groaning
b) jump out of bed both feet first and start that morning pot of coffee
c) listen to the concert half-asleep knowing it’s just another ordinary miracle
d) all of the above

I wish I could answer “b” but I was somewhere between “a” and “c” when the chirping began today.

We call this the “Disney Wake-Up Call” after our cousin Kyla visited the island a few years ago and woke up to a bounty of birds outside her window and asked at breakfast:  “Who ordered the bleeping Disney Wake-up Call?”

On some days, during the early morning aviary concerts, when I am half-sleeping and half-waking, I lie in bed thinking of it in terms of a Disney Wake-up Call; wishing those little birds could each take an arm, sleeve, collar, some part of my clothing and dress me like Cinderella’s little helpers.

Even better if they knew how to pour a cup of coffee and bring it to me in bed.

On most days, I’m pretty impressed with those birds.
They are on time every morning.  Like clockwork.  Loud clockwork.
Like they know something I don’t.  Like there is a miracle out there waiting for me.

As Sara McLachlan reminds me in her song Ordinary Miracle:

When you wake up everyday
Please don’t throw your dreams away
Hold them close to your heart
‘Cause we are all a part
Of the ordinary miracle

This might be a little too foo-foo and fluffy to stomach, but since I usually reside on the sunny side of up, I’m going with it.  In fact, I rather like it, because I believe in miracles, even those of the ordinary kind.

For the most part I think everyday is both ordinary yet miraculous.
I mean, on some mornings it’s a small miracle for me to flush the toilet (Sorry, it’s true and one of the biggest pet peeves Justin has living with me. I can’t help it, I’m half asleep at 5am!).

Isn’t that just another ordinary miracle?  Flushing toilets!  Running water!  Plumbing!

As I sit here writing, rain is pouring outside my window, thunder and lightning crashing down all around me.  After the loud cracks of thunder spooked the bejeezus out of me and I jumped three feet in the air, I realize this too is just another ordinary miracle today.

Isn’t it remarkable?
Like every time a raindrop falls
It’s just another
Ordinary miracle today

Not only do I believe in miracles, I believe in you.
As in, you can do anything for one year.
And I’m out to prove it’s possible, for me and for you.

That’s what this promise is all about.
Sure, some days around here are pretty ordinary, stagnant, boring and tired.  But I keep on “keeping on” with my promise.  In the end I hope to have one whole year of not “throwing my dreams away” — and that’ pretty extraordinary if you ask me.

Life is like a gift, they say
Wrapped up for you everyday
Open up, and find a way
To give some of your own

So what about you…
Do you believe in ordinary miracles?
