JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS DAY 7 :: kind of niceness

7 Jan

Pushover.

Today I was kind in a regular-sort-of-day way. Mostly to my doggies.

I am a puppy pushover. The dogs get what they want. If they want something they come to me. They paw at my leg. They whine in my direction. Because I cave. I am probably a dog trainer’s worst nightmare. I can’t help it… they pull at my heartstrings.

Today Brady got what he wanted. A hug. A sit-on-my-lap pawfully sweet hug.

And Pup got what he wanted. A pawfully cute kiss and lots of attention — and too much water.

And that was probably the extent of my intentional kindness today. And, you know what? I am okay with that. I yearned for a dog for half my adult life. I couldn’t convince my ex to be a dog owner. It caused me an overwhelmingly intense sort of sadness. The kind that is hard to explain to others, but you know it deep in your heart. When you’re a dog person you need a dog.

And now I have two. So, yeah, maybe I’m a pushover. But I waited for it and I have earned it. And I do enjoy every second of it. Even the bumpy, barky, messy days.

Which reminds me of another kind of kindness: enjoying what you have.
Enjoy what you have, kind soul.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

P.S.  Challenge #1 is still on!  Are you Practicing Respect?
If you choose to accept this challenge, try one of the following acts:

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 309 :: and then there were two

11 Nov

Day 309: Home.

I am home. And there are at least two little guys happy to see me. There’s something so wonderful about a tail wagging when you open the door. Make that two tails.

Namaste, Home. Namaste.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 217 :: you can do anything

13 Aug

Day 217: You can.

My mantra is You Can Do Anything. And you can.
Case in point: this dog.

In this video, you can watch this dog climb down a ladder (thanks for the video DeAnne!). Yes, a dog. Climb down a ladder.

It just goes to show that we can do more than we know.
If only we believe.
You can do anything!

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 181 :: buddy system

6 Jul

Day 181: Yoga Pal.

Tonight, my yoga looked like this:  Pup’s face.

He wouldn’t stop licking my face while I was finishing my yoga. (Savasana is very sticky with Mr. Licky.) And yet, it’s always nice to have a buddy when exercising. Even if it’s one who just watches and barks.

And licks.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 137 :: dogged determination

18 May

Day 137: Brady.

I live with a food stalker. His name is Brady. He knows where all the food in the house is at all times. I mean ALL the food at ALL times.

Here is sleeps so cute and cuddly next to Pup. But really, this is all a facade. He is calculating his next sneaky food-swiping move.

Which he promptly orchestrated moments after I took this photo. It was just a bowl of oatmeal. But he devoured it in the 30 seconds I walked away from the kitchen. DEVOURED it. An entire bowl of oatmeal. Dry, bland oats.

Thanks to Brady, there will be no second batch of oatmeal chocolate power bars. There aren’t enough oats left to mix a bar together for breakfast.

But I think there is much we can learn from our little Brady. Sure, the obvious is to not leave food out on the counter (even said oats). But there is more to observe.

This dog.
He has me thinking a lot about dogged determination. In the pursuit of what we love most. For him it is food. Any food. Even dry, bland, oats.

For you it might be dancing, singing, creating, doing. For me, it is making promises and showing up. And this year, that means yoga.

But there is also this: opportunity.
Brady knows how to patiently wait for his window of opportunity to open. And when it appears he leaps. There is no second guessing. No hesitation. No over-thinking. There is no self-talk. Brady does not stop to ask, “Should I go for that bowl of oats now? What if she comes back and finds me all head in the bowl paws on the counter? What if I get in trouble?”

Nope. Brady is all action.
He’s a Wait. Watch. Strike. Live with the consequences sort of dog.
And as frustrating as that is at times, I have to say, I respect it.
No, I actually love it. It’s inspiring really.

So, tonight, as I put away the rest of my oatmeal chocolate bar ingredients, I leave you with this. The next time you find yourself waiting and watching, just think of Brady.

And…
Go for it.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 82 :: downward puppy day

23 Mar

Day 82: Our Pups.

It’s National Puppy Day — and for this Pup who is about to turn 15 it seems like quite the honor. Here’s our Pup a few years ago, standing on the pier of the island that we love.

And here’s a more mature Pup:

And here’s a flashback to our tiny Brady meeting Pup for the first time:

They change. We change. They grow. We grow. But they will always be our Pups.
So in their honor… I do a downward dog!

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 232 :: a dogs tail

26 Aug
Someone once told me that a dog’s tail wags at the vibration of happiness.

Now, I don’t know if that is true but based on all the posts, love and attention for National Dog Day it might just be the secret to bliss.

So here’s to the dogs. All of them. Thanks for the loves, high fives and blissful, tail wagging fun.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 176 :: the hamburglar

30 Jun
Brady strikes again.
What was going to be our dinner tonight quickly turned out to be Brady’s great heist.

I should have known. Pup tried to tell me. I was sitting in the living room watching a scene from one of Justin’s favorite movies (High Fidelity) when Pup began pawing at my leg.

I told him to stop.
He continued to paw.
I asked Pup if he wanted to go outside.
Nope. He continued to paw.

The next thing I knew Justin asked me to follow him into the kitchen.

“You have to see something.”
“What?” I asked not knowing what there was to see. Of course my first reaction was “Bugs! Ants! Spiders!”

Nope. It wasn’t.
It was The Hamburglar.

Three hamburgers totally disappeared. There were four patties waiting nicely on a plate, to go out to the grill. We should not have left them on the counter, but we did. And Brady spotted them while we were watching a 60 second scene from a movie.

Sixty seconds flat! Hamburgers gone.

With no trace but a few pieces of onion on the counter in their place.  There was one left on the plate, noticeably the furtherest one from the edge of the counter, where it was clearly too far to reach.

I, personally, can only eat one hamburger. But three. This little doggie ate THREE! Raw ones too.

And we know for a fact that it was Brady. One look at the plate that I held up in front of his nose and he beelined it to his kennel. Which was exactly what Pup was trying to tell me. Pawing at my leg telling on his four-legged brother. I should have listened.

Instead I went to the grocery store for dinner goods …AGAIN. Asking myself...Where’s the beef?

In the end Brady had his own little moment of bliss.
And we learned (another) lesson.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

Justin has been teaching Brady to bring the mail to me. Sometimes it works better than others…

But today’s delivery was a box:

A Glossy Box!

I love a surprise. Such bliss!
(Thanks to Oprah’s Circle of Friends!)

More tomorrow.
