Day 48: f*ing friday :: facials (a love letter)

17 Feb

F*ing Fridays are back!
And, they will continue to occur on Friday. I mentioned some of my favorite F words back on Day 5 in Year 1, including: Fearless, Fabulous, Fine, Fun, Faith, Freedom, Forgiveness, to name a Few.

Last week I dove into the word  Florida.

Today’s F*ing Friday is dedicated to the word:

As in, a love letter to self-care.

Dear Facials,

I can hardly believe it took me 37 years to meet you.  But, now… I can’t imagine this world without you.

Thank you for helping me realize the importance of taking care of my skin.  But, even more so, thank you for helping me realize the importance of taking care of me and making time for me.

I must admit, even after spending an entire year investing in my head, heart, body and soul, I still hesitate at times to fully commit to self-care.  Even though I know it is so, so, so worth it!

So, tonight, I am happy to report I dove into a simple facial I did right here at home.

It’s a good reminder of how great if feels to commit to self-care.
It’s a good reminde of all the reason why I love you.

P.S. I’ll be seeing more of you soon — I bought a deal for a Living Social facial today too!

Day 2: celebrating the past 365 days

2 Jan

Here we are in Woodinville, Washington at the beautiful Willows Lodge.

I waited 365 days for this, to relax and unwind and celebrate my promise of 2011.
It’s my holiday spa-la-la-la if you will.

The lodge is located within a stone’s throw to numerous wineries (Chateau St. Michelle, Columbia, etc) and comes complete with spa services and yummy restaurants (The Barking Frog, Herbfarm and Redhook Brewery), plus, to top it all off, our room is scrumptious.

The showers have digital hot temperature sets and the hotel is so pet-friendly they even offer a doggy turn-down service.  (But we won’t tell Pup since we left him at home.)

My favorite, is the over-sized bathtub that looks into the bedroom with cozy fireplace. The tub is built at the perfect angle so you can watch TV while submerged in bubbles.

It works.
Believe me.
I tested it out.

I share all this only to prove one point — the importance of celebration.

I have a few celebrations lined up to reward myself for this past year of taking care of my head, heart, body and soul.

  • A few days at this special spa with my honey, Justin, whose support was unwavering this past year.
  • And then, of course, a personal-stylist-consulting-shopping-extravaganza with the one and only Holly Getty.

I promise to take you along for the ride.

But, tonight, I promised to share the rules for Year 2 of The Promise 365 (plus one leap year day of course, but who’s counting).

As I wrote yesterday, I am dedicating this year to LOVE.  That’s right, that four-letter word that runs the world.

The reason I am doing this is much deeper than just some lovey-dovey idealistic notion.  It’s actually pretty scary.

You see, over this past year I learned something simply profound:  there are only two forces in this world:

One is love.
The other, fear.

And, it got me thinking.  A lot.
What would it take for me to get over my fears?  Is it just a matter of love?  Could it really be that simple?

Well… this year we are going to find out.
So that’s it — over the next 365 days I have to face my fears.  Believe me, I have some fears that are everything from friendly (large crowds) to fierce (spiders). It scares me to death, but I know it will be worth it.

Oh, yeah, and write every single day.  As if that isn’t scary enough.

More tomorrow.
Until then, I hope you find some time to celebrate your past 365 days.
I will be over here floating from my facial.

Day 292: how to make your dreams come true

19 Oct

“Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.” ~ Napoleon Hill

Fresh off of a Radiant Results Fabulous Facial, I have to report another amazing day on our spawesome adventure.  It’s actually hard to believe tonight is our last night on these comfy beds at Lake Austin Spa Resort.

And, so it most fitting, on our very last night at this very special spa, we learned how to make dream pillows.

Not just any dream pillows, but herbal dream pillows.

Did you know that dream pillows can provide more resting sleep or bring more creative and vivid dreams?  I didn’t, but I am about to find out.

Today I mixed together a blend of fresh dried herbs at the instruction of the spa’s resident gardener and herb expert, Trisha Shirley.

I learned that Marjoram adds a sense of warmth, safety and comfort and Rosemary insures sleep and keeps away bad dreams  (but you must use Rosemary sparingly).

Mullein guards against nightmares and Lemon Balm is a valuable antidepressant useful for anxiety and insomnia.

You can learn more about dream pillows and the different types of herbs on Trisha’s resource page here and there’s even a book you can buy called Making Herbal Dream Pillows!

I am going to sleep with my dream pillow inside my pillow tonight and hope for some sweet, sweet dreams to remember in the morning.

Even so, I am reminded that dreams can happen during the daytime too, it just takes a little vision, hope and discipline and a garden full of passion.

Yesterday as Debbie shared strategies on How To Live the Life of a Woman on Fire, it occurred to me — we really do have the power to make our dreams come true.

In fact, if I really think about it, I believe I am living one of my dreams right now, as I lay my head down on this pillow and fall asleep knowing I have returned to the place where this promise began — where I took that very first step to changing an entire year in my own life.

The good news is, I know you can do it too.
It just takes one tiny, itty-bitty, first step in the right direction.

One step turns into two, two turn into to ten, until one day you look up and say, Oh. My. Gosh. Somebody pinch me.

Sweet dreams.
