finding the funny – 15 days to go

There are 15 days left of The Promise 365!

Tonight, we laughed. I love to laugh even though at times I forget to laugh. When I am overwhelmed and overthinking and under stress and super focused, well, those are the times I forget to laugh even if I am smiling.

Fortunately, I married a man that brings me laughter. I call him the Captain of Fun. He brings the funny and he always reminds me to lighten up. Justin has been my captain in many ways but over the last nine years, he has been the King of Laughter. He makes me watch funny things, he sends me stupid links to stupid jokes that make me laugh out loud. He makes funny faces. He makes me cringe until I cry with laughter.

He is on a mission to make me laugh (and find a brand of beer that I will actually drink – of which he has yet to be successful – however that’s another story for another day)… but back to the laughter. When my mood goes beyond the happy zone and into the hangry, sad, upset, frustrated, stressed to the max zone it wakes Justin up and puts him into pure mission mode: make Jamie laugh. And somehow he does. Every. Time. He is good at this job, one that he doesn’t take lightly.

And I am grateful.

Laughter is a gift and lightness is a joy. It’s even better when it’s exponentially shared.
Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 – DAY 272 :: happy

1 Oct

I laughed a lot today. At a doctor’s appointment no less. I had my annual exam and pap smear, which I find to be the funniest word ever. Smear. Like it’s some sort of topping for toast. It isn’t, by the way, in case you have never had one.

Right before the pap smear ensued I was asked to dress down and don the fabled paper gown. So I did, except for my bra, because you know, the girls are fake so it doesn’t matter anymore. I guess I forgot to tell my new doctor this because when she started my annual exam she opened up my gown and frowned at me. “Why are you wearing your bra?”

I looked at her and laughed. “Oh, I forgot to tell you, these are fake.”

She laughed. I laughed even harder.
Then she said, “You’re right, don’t need to examine those.”

As we laughed even harder I realized that I forgot to tell her something else. Two night ago I did a body scrub made with Turmeric which turned the bathtub and my toes and fingers temporarily yellow. As I explained this to my new doctor I warned her that I may have other skin parts that were yellow from it too, so not to be alarmed.

She laughed again.
I laughed all the way through the procedure.
She called me “Tumeric Toes.”
And then we laughed some more.

I have never had more fun at a doctor’s office. Or laughed harder. Which is a welcome change in my life and truly underscores the theory that laughter is the best medicine.

And, joy is a simple thing. A very powerful, simple thing.

Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 148 :: finding the funny

1 Jun

Day 148: Funny.

Day two of a band-aid on my finger. And I’m finding it funny.

Because it’s on my MIDDLE finger.
Ahhhhh…. we have to find the fun in funny somewhere.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 283 :: the funny bone

14 Oct
Today’s Bliss….. my funny bone.

Laughter. It hurts so good. I have been listening to Amy Poehler’s book Yes Please intermittently. I downloaded it for free with the tokens in my Audible account. It seemed to strike the perfect balance of fun, friendly, upbeat and quirky – perfect for a ten-hour drive for the great move north.

Except for one problem.

I couldn’t figure out how to play the audio book on my phone’s Audible account through the car stereo, without internet, while I was driving. And I ran out of time packing an avalanche of boxes in our living room to find a moment to Google the instructions. So the book that was to accompany me on our great drive north never made it out of the box.

So, here I am, sitting at my desk, listening to the audio version of Yes Please laughing my ass off. Actually, it’s my funny bone that hurts.

And that reminds me of something I knew as a very curious little girl who wrapped rubber bands around the sink sprayer so an unexpected stream of water could greet the next person to wash dishes in the kitchen…

Funny is good.
Laughter is precious.
Comedy is bliss.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 260 :: relishing the funny

22 Sep
This hit me tonight in my Aha Place. I’m not sure why it’s taken so long… but here it is …laughter.

It could have happened while I was working and listening to The Tonight Show.
Or maybe we are just in a time of rediscovering our laughs. Take a look at this:

We seem to be in a trajectory and upward swing of laughter. And I’m not sure what that means. Other than this. Laughter feels good.

And maybe that’s the easiest path to Bliss? Regardless, it’s worth exploring and laughing along the way.

Jamie’s Blog – DAY 90 :: a little laughter goes a long way

31 Mar

We’ve been having a lot of fun around here lately. So many “boob” jokes. And that’s the way I like it.

I am focusing on fun, peace, calmness and laughter & beauty.

So this morning, I shouldn’t have been surprised when I walked into the kitchen and found this note on the kitchen chalkboard wall.

I laughed so hard I couldn’t help but share.

More tomorrow.

Day 118: f*ing friday :: funny fabulous france

27 Apr

F*ing Fridays are back!
And, they will continue to occur on Friday. I mentioned some of my favorite F words back on Day 5 in Year 1, including: Fearless, Fabulous, Fine, Fun, Faith, Freedom, Forgiveness, to name a Few.

Last week I dove into the word Fetch

Today’s F*ing Friday is dedicated to the words:
Funny, fabulous, France.

As in, pure art.

Today was fun and fabulous in Paris.
And, we met a woman who is out to prove it.

Her name is Susan Shup.
And her art is FABULOUS!

We entered her Parisian studio through a gigantic medieval looking gate, walked through a courtyard and then winded our way up spiral steps until we arrived inside her work space with paint splattered walls.

The paint was still fresh and the air smelled like it too.
Her paintings are also fresh, funny and fabulous.

Her mantras captured in graphic letters and whimisical strokes say it all.
Like this one:

And, on an F*ing Friday like today…
With Food…

French Flags…

French Fashion…

Behind the scenes of French Fashion…

And Fragile Parisian pieces…

Pure art is what I have on my mind.

It’s great to see that art doesn’t have to be serious or subdued to be powerful, intriguing and thought provoking.

It can be funny and fabulous.
Or fresh and fragile.

Because, really, aren’t we all…
And, isn’t that what makes us priceless?

Day 238: f*ing friday :: funny

26 Aug

Today continues the weekly series, F*ing Fridays, which will coincidentally occur on Friday. I mentioned some of my favorite F words back on Day 5, including: Fearless, Fabulous, Fine, Fun, Faith, Freedom, Forgiveness, to name a Few.

Last week I dove into the word(s) Finish Line.

Today’s F*ing Friday is dedicated to the word:

As in, sense of humor.

I am notorious for messing up song lyrics.
You may remember my rendition of Katy Perry’s Firework song on Day 44.

Tonight, I’ve been singing Come On Irene purposefully changing Come On Eileen to my own hurricane appropriate lyrics, in honor of the She-Ra headed up the east coast.

Today, while President Obama prepared to cut his vacation short and leave the island, the rest of us ran around purchasing last minute items.

For me, it was acquiring things we can eat if we lose power for a few days, including:

3 bags of carrots
3 tubs of hummus
2 bags of rice cakes
apples, peaches, kale
rice chips
2 cans of soup
4 cans of beans
frozen chicken (to grill if we can’t cook)

As I left the store with bags upon bags in my arms I thought:
“This may the closest to I get to a Back -To-School shopping feeling this year.”

It wasn’t just errands and purchases today. I also scavenged around for my un-fair weather friends …my pink and green rain boots.

Just in case.
They have come in handy during other key moments this year.

Everyone else, who is left on the island, seemed to be doing the same today too. Finalizing errands.

Those who weren’t at the grocery store were waiting in line in front of me at Mobile for one last gas up before the storm.

After the super cheerful  gas attended filled my tank (you’re not allowed to fill your own tank here) he gave my car a good pat on the trunk and said: “Have a good hurricane!”

Funny boy.

While the coast line may be loosing its sense of security, at least our sense of humor is still in tact.

I might be singing an ironic song tonight, but I do hope everyone plays it safe this weekend.  Because there’s nothing funny about what could happen.

May the last laugh be on this f*ing hurricane and not all of us.
