JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9
finding the funny – 15 days to go
{trust}

There are 15 days left of The Promise 365!

Tonight, we laughed. I love to laugh even though at times I forget to laugh. When I am overwhelmed and overthinking and under stress and super focused, well, those are the times I forget to laugh even if I am smiling.

Fortunately, I married a man that brings me laughter. I call him the Captain of Fun. He brings the funny and he always reminds me to lighten up. Justin has been my captain in many ways but over the last nine years, he has been the King of Laughter. He makes me watch funny things, he sends me stupid links to stupid jokes that make me laugh out loud. He makes funny faces. He makes me cringe until I cry with laughter.

He is on a mission to make me laugh (and find a brand of beer that I will actually drink – of which he has yet to be successful – however that’s another story for another day)… but back to the laughter. When my mood goes beyond the happy zone and into the hangry, sad, upset, frustrated, stressed to the max zone it wakes Justin up and puts him into pure mission mode: make Jamie laugh. And somehow he does. Every. Time. He is good at this job, one that he doesn’t take lightly.

And I am grateful.

Laughter is a gift and lightness is a joy. It’s even better when it’s exponentially shared.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 – DAY 188 :: trust the beauty

7 Jul

{trust}

We drove the south coastline today winding through little seaside towns and beautiful picturesque downtowns and stores. It made me think about my very first promise not to shop, because, I was shopping in the most wonderful sense of the word.

Jaynane and I were together, shopping and oohing and ahhing at all the little beautiful things looking for dresses and skirts and jewelry and presents. This is a partnership I know well, it is one my Mama Sling taught to me. To appreciate beauty. Not in the sense of the torrid and turbulent definition of beauty standards but to appreciate the beauty within.

Because beauty is a feeling.

I used to think beauty was a very specific thing, a look, a shape, a fabric, a cut, a design, an art. But it’s really the art of feeling. And when we feel we are alive. We are here. We are present.

Which is the best present of all.
Trust the beauty within.

Trust me!
More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 38 :: the joy of dreaming

9 Feb
{dream on}

As this year takes off I am thinking about dreams. Where dreams come from and how they find us. And the joy that comes from making our dreams come true.

I have also been thinking about the inspiration I find in words. I believe that words are medicine. Truly medicine. Words hold a vibration. And that vibration carries through our soul.

So this year, as I think about JOY… creating joy and sharing joy…I have decided to share more words. Here is tonight’s addition:

Dreams are the gift of our nights and the adventure of our days.

Here’s to your dreams and your joy!
More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 339 christmas kindness

5 Dec
{hug someone}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

My dear Mama Sling loved Christmas. She loved wrapping the presents with gigantic bows that she made from her very hands. Mama Sling spent hours making those bows, and they were beautiful too.

Every Christmas we had to assemble the entire tree scene and set up with one goal — “Don’t crush the bows!”

Our Christmas Tree was a gigantic game of Tetris. The boxes had to be placed “just right” in order to keep all the bows fluffy and shiny and new. Mama Sling would sit back in her chair and command us to move and shuffle boxes under the tree until they found the perfect spot that would showcase all their glory.

Mama Sling’s bows were just one of the many, many, many things she did exceptionally well. Another talent of hers was the art of the HUG.

Mama Sling could hug a stranger and make them feel like family. Nobody made it past our front without a hug.

And so it is, in this month of Christmas Kindness, that I am sharing hugs. The Mama Sling kind. The kind that make you feel all warm inside and loved and accepted. Kind of like being wrapped in a beautiful bow.

Hug someone.
It’s Christmas Kindness.

More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 97 :: kindness comes in pretty packages

10 Apr

You’ve Got Mail.

Ah, kindness. You’re starting to kick in. Or kick my butt. So many lessons learned already in these short few months.

Some, are lessons I would rather not see in myself. A shade of unkindness, a shadow of mean, a sting of being sorry for words better off not said. But, as we know, when you are ready the teacher appears. And so, with each lesson, I remain open to the meaning. And growth.

And then, there are the surprises!

Today, I received a pretty little package in the mail, from a friend. It held a little red card and inside a little red envelope and inside of that a beautiful note and pretty little penny. And, for me, it was a huge surprise.

It was beyond kind. The KIND of KINDNESS that you don’t expect.

And that has me thinking… maybe making a promise of intentional kindness isn’t so much about what I give. Maybe it’s also about opening up the door to receive.

As the year moves forward we shall see. Until then, may kindness find you with beautiful little surprises (and lessons that don’t sting).

More tomorrow….
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 28 :: sharing and books

28 Jan

Books.

I love to read. So today I am celebrating books.

Books and ideas turn me on. I am a brainy-nerdy-book-reading student of big ideas. But I never have the time to read all the books sitting on my bookshelf. I start most of them, I finish some of them, I barely crack open a few of them.

So I really love this…

Today, I spoke with Steve Cunningham, the CEO of ReadItFor.Me today. He offered to share a little gift with all of my network. (I think that is KIND and nice so I’m sharing tonight on the blog.)

Read It For Me sends free book summaries of all the latest business book reads.
There’s no catch or credit card required. If you want a free month, all you have to do is go here and fill out a quick form, and then Readitfor.me will set up your account.

Pure disclaimer, if loads of people sign up I get a bonus membership to ReadItFor.me, so there’s that little perk. Only sign up if it will benefit you! 😉

Now on to some of the books I love… here’s my top Biz Books:

Lovemarks
Purple Cow
Eat That Frog
The One Thing
The Art of War
The New Rules of Marketing & PR

More tomorrow….
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 25 :: this gift

25 Jan

Day 25. This gift.

It’s almost an hour until my birthday begins. So this gift is on me, to you, if you like free yoga that is.

Click here: LISTING OF FREE YOGA

Okay, maybe that’s not the biggest gift ever given… but I am starting to think that this year of yoga could be the best gift I ever gave to myself. Of course the jury is out for about another 340 days.

I have to admit, tonight, I didn’t feel like any sort of downward dog. And that’s the power of a promise. It’s a nudge, a kick in the pants, a reminder of what I said I would do, every single day. So I did my yoga. And I felt better once it was done.

And that brings me to this: my Mama Sling. I realized in the middle of my downward, upward, sun salutations that what I really wanted was a hug from my mom. On the eve of my birthday my thoughts center on her – what was she thinking, doing, dreaming, hoping, bracing herself for in these moments before I came into the world just after the clock struck midnight. (I did break her tailbone, so maybe it’s best that we not relive that particular moment in time.)

As long as she’s been gone I still long for these moments with her, how she would retell the story of my birth (all ten, wrinkled, roly-poly pounds of me). And yet, the older I get, the more I find my birthday story is really her story. After that day, the rest of my days are my own promises to keep.

So tonight I bought myself an early birthday gift. A new pen.
To write the rest of my story.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

Jamie’s BLOG – DAY 137 :: life is beautiful

18 May

As Sunday winds down I am compelled to share something beautiful:  plates!

But not just any plates. Inspiring. Beautiful. Quotable.

I received them as a gift, but the gift is really this, the reminder.
Life is beautiful. Everything has beauty.

It’s all just a matter of how we/you/I see it.
What do you see?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

{what’s beautiful to you right now?}

Jamie’s BLOG – DAY 125 :: home is where the heart is…

6 May

We are home! After the long journey through surgery and beyond we have landed “home” with many hearts and our head/body/soul intact.

With me I have many tokens from the beach, including a handful of heart-shaped rocks.

We arrived home to a little bit of beauty tonight too, including a box with a heart message inside of it.

One of the items was this heart-shaped dish which was the most perfect way to house the heart rocks we found on the beach. (Thank you Kim & Dave!)

It’s perfect! It’s beautiful! And it was a gift and a good reminder that the heart is our strongest muscle.

It’s also my little spot of beauty for the day.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

BLOG – GIFT DAY 354 :: it’s not always what you think

20 Dec

I love this ad from Apple.
It reminds me that things are not always what you (initially) think.

We have experienced a year of miracles around here.

So many miracles!
Even though it hasn’t always felt or seemed that way in the moment.

I found a lump in my throat. (scary!)
After surgery it turned out benign. Miracle!

Brady ran away this summer. (scary!)
Brady returned home safely because a wonderful woman found him and called the local radio station. Miracle!

We lost the bikes off the back of our car during our cross country adventure. (scary!)
Nobody was injured. Miracle!

Brady jumped the fence and went on his own adventure. (scary!)
I luckily saw it happen and knew which direction to send Justin on the chase. We found Brady making friends in the neighborhood and safely brought him home. Miracle!

Miracle are everywhere.

Just goes to show things are not always what you (initially) think.
Sometimes you have to wait around for the rest of the story.
Sometimes you have to wait for the miracle to show up.
And sometimes you have to look at it differently to see the hidden gift.

My gift of the day is this:
I wish you many, many miracles.

Thank you for being here.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore {fearless}
Jamie

P.S. You still have time to join us in The Card Crusade and help spread some cheer this year.You could win a FREE year’s worth of greeting cards from Green Ink Gallery!

{what miracles did you have this year?}
