JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9
bows – 16 days to go
{trust}

There are 16 days left of The Promise 365!

I love Sunday afternoons. Today, I spent the day wrapping presents, watching the Hallmark Channel and watching the New England Patriots win. Brady sat next to me the entire time, tuckered out from all the activity.  While watching was the easy part, doing is always harder.

I can watch my share of Hallmark Christmas specials, and I can cheer on Patriots touchdowns, but I cannot wrap a present as my mother. I’m not knocking my own skills. I am a wrapping paper expert. I know all the secrets to making a present pop, including creasing the corners and lining up the design on the papers just perfectly. Alas, I cannot make a bow like Mama Sling.

I tried. Many times. I started over many times too. I used tape (it snapped) and yarn (it broke) and wire (it slipped).

So much of this blog has been dedicated to the fond memories I have of Mama Sling. There are so many amazing memories and moments, and there are so many incredible things she taught me. But she didn’t teach me how to make her famous bows.

The bows that she spent hours on, the bows that she wouldn’t let us smoosh under the tree. We had to Tetris all the presents under the tree to specifically make sure no bow would touch another bow. There was no bow smooshing allowed. This won’t be a problem this Christmas since I cannot replicate the Mama Sling bow.

But that’s not really the point, is it? I still have the memories of her laughter and her love and her magical Christmas bows. Even though I do not have her or her bow making talent, I have her in my heart, which keeps her by my side.

The best part of Christmas is not the gifts we buy, but the moments we give each other that last long beyond the time we are together. Thank you, Mama Sling, for being by my side throughout these past nine years, and these past nine promises, and every Christmas in between.

Even if I can’t make a bow to save my life!

Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 gifts – 37 days to go

24 Nov

{trust}

There are 37 days left of The Promise 365!

I can hardly believe we are almost a month away from the New Year. Thanksgiving is this week and Christmas is a few weeks away!  And there is a part of me that cannot quite believe this blog will be ending soon.

The irony is not lost on me. A promise that was supposed to be just one year turned into nine. That’s why this is called The Promise 365. I never thought it would be The Promise 3,285 and yet, here we are….37 days left!

In many ways this blog has been a gift, to me, my future self and to anyone who found it on a day where it made a difference. It has not been a money-making venture, it was never intended to be. Instead, it was a way to use my gifts (the ability to show up every night) and share my lessons (the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful).

We are all here to learn lessons, share our gifts, and enjoy the process. So tonight, I reflect on the power of using your gifts for the good of all. Don’t keep your gifts to yourself, they were never meant to be silent. Share, give, shout that which is special, makes you different and defines your life.

Use your gifts for the good of all.

After all, that is why you are here.
Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 63 :: enjoy

6 Mar
{the moment}

I had a moment tonight when I remember something: there is only this moment. That’s it. This is all. This very moment until it turns into the next moment. But we are still inside this moment.

So we might as well enjoy it.

Believe me, that is easier said (or blogged) than done. I am a poster child for forgetting the wisdom of living in the moment….at times. So let this be my reminder 😉  Yours too, if you wish.

Here’s to this moment.

More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 59 :: the gift of friends

1 Mar
{joy-filled}

Sometimes the best gifts in life are people. Especially the people who can see your life even better and more clear than you possibly ever could yourself. That’s what I call a true friend.

And I like to call my true friends too! Tonight I was on the phone with one for three hours — three hours! It’s a good thing that we never run out of anything to say to each other. It’s even better to be seen.

I think a true friend is one who can believe in the other person’s best life, beautiful gifts, and biggest goals. No matter what today looks like.

Joy is the gift of a friend.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 344 ::christmas kindness

11 Dec
{receiving}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

Today I was on the other side of kindness….

I received an early Christmas gift. It was a bundle of yarn to crochet. I have not “crocheted” (is that a word?) since I was a little girl. My Mama Sling taught me how to hold the yarn and weave it together in a gentle way that eventually created a scarf.

My scarf was crooked with wobbly holes. But I loved it. I loved it so much I gave that scarf to my friend Kari for her birthday. We were maybe in second grade and I’m sure the “gift” looked just as wobbly as my little fingers as they mimicked my mothers weaving magic.

But it was the thought that counted the most. And that brings me to this:  Sometimes the best part of kindness is receiving.

Being open to gifts and the love that comes with it might just be one of the secrets of Christmas.

And now…. I crochet!

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 165 :: gifts of kindness

6 Jul

Surprise.

I have been thinking a lot about gifts this year. Kindness as a gift, a silent one in so many ways – and the loudest gift of all.

But today, a box showed up on our doorstep. It’s a wedding gift!

And, I have to say… boxes are FUN to open! Thank you, Dick and Judy. Not only for a box filled with gifts but for all of your love and support and the ultimate gift of kindness you have always shown us.

Afterall…
Kindness is a gift.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 26 :: birthday

26 Jan

Kindness.

I am in awe. Mostly at the kindness that birthdays bring in out in everyone I know. I am so thankful and grateful for the text messages, facebook posts, calls, messages, and all the ways that I have been reached today. And touched.

It is the gift of being seen and remembered. Is there anything better?

It reminds me in this year of Intentional Acts of Kindness that gifts and kindness come in many forms (money, love, care, listening, seeing, honoring). Not all are seen or heard but all are felt, deeply, with the heart.

Here’s to another trip around the sun. Thank you for being here with me. I feel you. I see you. I hope you know how much you mean to me.
More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 360 :: pretty christmas

25 Dec

Day 360: Morning.

Another Christmas is in the books. This one came with a snowy mountain sunrise scene (with coffee) and many gifts.

Amongst the shiny things and tech toys and warm and fuzzies, the best gift was being together.

After a year of yoga (almost) I have learned a few things about myself and how far I can stretch. So tonight, it is with great awareness that I say… I’m not shredding tonight! Just a few yoga stretches of the Christmas kind. And I’m okay with that because what was I thinking doing the Yoga Shred over Christmas???

And…if you wish, you can still join the Shred course here.
Namaste, Gifts. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 355 :: blissful gifts

25 Dec

Today’s bliss…coffee.

At the wake of dawn. As we waited for two little girls to hand out gifts and begin the annual ceremony of paper shredding. Which is always so bitter sweet — the moment is so special and then it goes by so quickly.

Not the opening of the presents of course, but the coming together, the oohs and ahhs, the “I can’t believe you remembered!” and the squeals too.

Some of them came from full-grown adults.

All that say, in so many ways, I love you.
What bliss.

Peace. Love. Bliss.
The best gift of all.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 359 :: repeat the sounding joy

25 Dec

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!

Today is a day of celebration and this morning we were giddy to gather around the tree.  Not only was it a morning of “ooohs” and “ahhs” it was also the annual gathering of family in pajamas.

And the gifts!

The gifts were thoughtful, personal, meaningful and special in so many ways. Including a turtle. Yes, a turtle.

A turtle for an 8-year-old girl who was thrilled and over the moon to get her very own turtle, thank you Uncle Justin. (Her parents, not so thrilled. But no worries, turtles only live for like seventy years).

The best part? The peak performance part of the day? She has already trained her turtle to crawl on demand. Next, I’m sure, she will have it doing tricks like shake and high five.

I wasn’t sure a turtle was the most appropriate gift when the turtle first arrived. But now, seeing the glow in an eight-year-old’s eyes, the giggle with glee and the pure bliss in her voice, I’m convinced it was the most perfect Christmas gift ever. The one that will be remembered. The story that will be told, over and over again (maybe by her parents t00).

And that has me thinking…
Christmas brings out so many gifts. Some of the best are those that come from the heart of knowing what really matters to those who matter most.

Merry Christmas.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
