I spent the day at eTail Boston, with brand marketers and acquisition marketers and eCommerce gurus. What we will do for a brand we love! Shoes, paint, clothing, cars… if there is one thing that ties the marketing suite together it is passion. Because, before all the ROI and ROAS and ROE data, there is love, passion and a reason to follow your heartstrings with your wallet.
I find it ironic that I sit here tonight writing about love and trust and following your heart — after being in eCommerce meetings all day long. But it just seems obvious, that we love what love, we trust what we trust, and we trust what we love. Even if it is a brand.
In business and in life, follow the trail that leads you to your heart.

Life is a journey. And this journey of blogging seems to always lead me back to the heart.
While trust is the theme of this year, my heart is getting a workout. Trust is an invisible force and quite delicate, but oh, so powerful. So tonight, I am sitting with trust in my heart. We have a choice to make about where we will move to next and there are many, many options but now…. we must choose between security and adventure, savings and spendings, winter or spring.
Choice is a wonderful thing. It is freedom. It is fierce. It is clarity. It is strength. Choice is a gift. But it requires trust.
Tonight Trust is whispering to me… Choose from the heart!

I was listening to my heart tonight or at least watching the heart monitor go up and up and up on the OrangeTheory screen as I worked out. Even though I felt winded and tired and let’s face it, in pain, I was fine. It’s a good reminder to trust your heart even when it’s beating faster than normal.
Calmly go where your heart takes you. After all, the heart is a muscle. Trust your heart.

Trust is seeping into my each and every day now… we are in month two of this promise. These promises are like hooks or lines really, that I throw out at the beginning of the year and see what comes in.
Month Two is usually just the warm-up… the beginning of momentum.
So here we are… and this is what Trust is telling me today.
Trust is the work of the heart. You have to feel what you believe… and you have to believe your instincts to trust them. So…. follow your heart.

We find ourselves in New Hampshire. From Massachusetts to Maine to New Hampshire. Three states in three days. It’s already been an adventure to remember.
Joy has me reflecting on the importance of gatherings. Brian said it best this weekend — “Life is about showing up.” I think joy might be too. There is joy in showing up in your life and in the life of others too.
Tonight as we sat around the fire on a warm summer night and shared stories and photos and heartfelt memories I saw a new light. Not the light of cell phones reflecting on faces but the light of a fireplace. It is a primal connection, that of flame and fire and the connection we share when we gather together — and show up.
Here’s to showing up. For your life and your joy.

Nothing can bring out a smile better than a puppy. Serendipitously, we found both today.
My day started by looking out the back sliding door. I was thinking of Pup, and all the times we walked the grass out that door, and how strange everything feels without him around. Then, out of nowhere a little blue hummingbird flew right in front of the window, up to the tree and then disappeared. A hummingbird! I have never seen a hummingbird out the door, or windows, or anywhere on our grounds at all.
“It’s a message from Pup!” I exclaimed and excitedly relayed what I saw to Justin. Then I looked up the symbolic meaning of hummingbirds:
It is not commonly known that the fluttering wings of the hummingbird move in the pattern of an infinity symbol – further solidifying their symbolism of eternity, continuity, and infinity. … The prime message of the hummingbird animal totem is: “The sweetest nectar is within!”
My heart leapt with joy. It was a message from Pup. He was telling us that he is okay, we will always be connected and it’s okay to move on.
So we continued our day. Beginning with a stop at Pet Smart to find Brady a new bed. After losing Pup he’s seemed a little lost. So we are, of course, spoiling him with attention and treats. It only seemed fair that he should get a new bed, just for him.
We headed to Pet Smart. Where there was a whole crop of tiny little puppies. They were adorable and all cuddled up next to each other, so of course, everyone wanted to pick them up.
As I knelt next to the makeshift coup created in the middle of the Pet Smart aisle, about to pick up an adorable and squirmy little puppy I heard a little voice behind me. It was a girl. She wanted to see the puppies. I turned and smiled at her and said, “Do you want to pet the puppies?” She nodded. I moved out of the way.
Then, her dad picked up one of the black, furry pups and placed it in her arms. She was so tiny, the pup almost dwarfed her. But her smile was bigger than both her and the puppy combined.
I really can’t think of anything more joyous to witness. A little one holding a little one. My heart beat harder and it made me smile right back at her. What joy!
And exactly what that hummingbird’s message was all about: life goes on and the sweetest nectar is within….our hearts.

Every day I stretch. I wish I could report that I stretch my body, but I’m not very consistent with physical workouts. I am, however, very consistent with growing and expanding my heart and mind. It’s a daily training routine called Life.
But this year is teaching me to stretch in a new way — in all matters of JOY. I am learning that joy is about expanding and stretching in heart & mind, being open to possibilities and being aware of each and every moment.
Life can take your breath away if you let it.

Want joy? Ask for it.
I suppose it is that simple. I know that when I set out at the beginning of the year with a promise, it is really a question. An ask. And the universe always answers.
So far, the universe is telling me to pay attention to the beat of my heart. That’s where it all begins. Find a place inside your heart that beats the drum of joy — and then follow it.

The snow has melted. And my little flowers outside my office window seemed to have survived the storm. They are brighter green today than they have been all week. It has me thinking of spring, and blossoms and the power of blooming.
But I know that the petals are really just the expression of all the work that happens before the flower blooms. The struggle in the soil, the surviving of the winter storms, the seeds that were planted so long ago. Blooming always starts on the inside, deep beneath the surface.
I have a feeling that is where JOY comes from too.
