JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 199 :: joy is getting caught in the rain

17 Jul

Rain is so rainy. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love to hear rain go pitter-patterer on the window while I am warm and cozy inside. But I hate to get soaking wet in it if I get caught outside.

Tonight, I got caught in a rainstorm on my way home from work.  I was in a car driving so I didn’t get wet but there were puddles and the rain was so hard that I had to pull over and stop at Starbucks to wait it out.

It made me pause. It made me stop. I think that’s what is joyful about rain. The heavens open us and pour water on the Earth and make everything else standstill, pay attention, observe and be present.

Getting caught in the rain might get you soaked but it can also suspend time.
What joy.

More tomorrow…

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 174 :: reaching the summitt

28 Jun

Day 174: Winning.

“I met her once.”

That’s what’s been in my head all day as I have watched the memorials pour out over the internet and social media for Pat Head Summitt.

She was a pioneer. The winningest coach ever. Intensely successful.

I was a pioneer when I met her. A Smith College Pioneer. Pat was to accept an award on the Smith Campus. I was the student picked to introduce her at the faculty luncheon in the private faculty building overlooking Paradise Pond.

I wasn’t picked because of my game scoring records (I barely had one) or my presence on the college court (more like the bench). I was picked because I was in the right place at the right time. And I intensely loved basketball and women’s sports.

Which was why was I was scared shitless. Of her. THE one and only Pat Summitt. A living legend then, almost twenty years ago. I was also scared of messing up. In front of HER. The living legend who was gracing the Smith College campus.

I practiced and practiced and practiced my speech. I probably worked harder on that speech than any term paper that semester. And on the day of the big introduction of Pat Head Summitt it all went by in a nanosecond. A blur. I didn’t mess up. It went without a hitch. Then I shook her hand. I SHOOK HER HAND!!! And, in an instant, it was over.

It’s an amazing legacy she leaves. One of strength and elegance. Determination and grace. Winningest path paved. Inspiration for a generation of little girls and a lifetime of women’s sports. She has now reached the ultimate summit. But leaves in her absence an incredible presence. And in my mind, an incredible gift.

I met her once.
And in that instance she made me do great.
Even if it was for a nanosecond.

I suppose that’s a practice she would be proud of. Making every nanosecond count. Whether it’s in life, work, school, on the court (or in the yoga studio).

Thank you, Pat.
For your life, your presence, your work, your mission.
Your inspiration.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 108 :: sharing sunset

18 Apr

Day 108: Beauty.

I love beauty. And I love living in a beautiful place. A place that takes my breath away, really. And tonight, Mother Nature put on a spring show.

One that reminds me to breath, to relax, to sit, to watch, to be.

Inspiring, really.
Maybe that’s what this year of yoga wants me to know? To live with beauty and inspiration. To breath, to relax, to sit, to watch, to be.

We’ll find out….

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 223 :: oh what a night

2014 BLOG – DAY 63 :: flowering up spring

4 Mar

First, let me preface this by saying I’m sorry.

If you lived in the snowy blizzard belt this winter I recognize that this post will make you want to scream, or vomit, or throw things at me…. or all of the above.

But, this post is about more than just flowers. So, bear with me as I show you what popped up in our front yard today:

I have no idea what it is!

Okay, so it’s a flower. Got that. But on a tree?
Any ideas??

Other things are flowering over here too. Today was my first day back to hot yoga. It’s been MONTHS since my body has felt that kind of sweat (except for my accidental 30 minutes in the hot sauna, oops!).

The best part was not the hot yoga but making a new friend.
(See… things are blooming over here!)

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 329 :: a month of inspiration :: miracles and roses

25 Nov

Today, in my month-long nod to inspiration, I share a rose.

In this week of gratefulness and gratitude I am reminded to count my blessings. Because while some things in life last longer than you can possibly imagine, others drift by with a blink of an eye.

I thought the growing season was over …like so long ago! I thought the last surprise rose in bloom had already passed us by.

It turns out I was wrong.
We have another pink rose in bloom, amongst the morning frost and the November cold.

And, so today, I celebrate more than a winter rose.
I celebrate miracles.

I am inspired by the every day kind of magical miracles blooming under my nose.  The ones with petals and the ones without.

Some occur in the moments right before the sun rises and my pups rise along with it. Others occur in a happy note, a wink, a laugh, a smile from a stranger, a knowing look, a nod, or a song.

Instead of waiting for a miracle I am reminded to stop, open my eyes, look around and smell the roses that abound.

It is, after all, the only way to recognize a miracle blooming right under your nose.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 322 a month of inspiration :: words to live by and cute puppies

18 Nov

Today, in my month-long nod to inspiration, I share a little email and some bonus cute puppy oohs and aahs.

But first…
My life revolves around email. It’s hard for my days not to be tied to email since it’s everywhere, right? Phone, iPad, computer.

So I find this post from Brain Pickings inspiring. David Ogilvy’s rules for writing memos back in the day. I think it can almost be applied to email.

For instance:

“If you want ACTION, don’t write. Go and tell the guy what you want.”

“Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning — and then edit it.”

I am probably guilty of breaking both the above examples.  Nonetheless, they are words to live by, even electronic ones.

And finally, a little inspiration to wooo your heart.
If you like babies and puppies and need an “ah, cute!” moment definitely check this out.  It’s full of inspiration!

More tomorrow.
Lovemore {fearless!}

{what makes you ooh and aah?}

BLOG – GIFT DAY 316 :: a month of inspiration :: a nod to mothers

12 Nov

Today, in my month-long nod to inspiration, I share mothers.
I know, it won’t be Mother’s Day for months…. but I have mommies on my brain.

Mostly because I was up all night with Pup.
Instead of barking he was barfing. Oy vey!  But he is thankfully now okay.

I, on the other hand, am exhausted.

That has me thinking about mommies.
And all the other people who offer a spoon full of sugar exactly when someone needs it.

Whether they have two legs or four, through all hours of the night.

I think mothers are pure inspiration.
Especially those who act as motherly protectors for children other than their “own”.

Take Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis a Sandy Hook Elementary teacher and one of Glamour’s inspiring Women of the Year. She is a life-saving hero to the children in her class that she stuffed inside a bathroom to avoid the worst possible nightmare for all of their mothers.

All this has me thinking about mommies.
Sometimes it takes more than a spoon full of sugar to help the medicine go down.

Sometimes we need someone to lean on, protect us, wrap their arms around us, shove us in a bathroom, or even walk us to the back door at 4am to barf.

So, here’s to all the mommies.
In the most delightful way.

More tomorrow.

{is there a mom who inspires you?}

BLOG – GIFT DAY 314 :: a month of inspiration :: puppies

11 Nov

Today, in my month-long nod to inspiration, I share puppies.
Because I love puppies. Who doesn’t?

Exhibit A: this species on Attack of the Cute

When I first sat down tonight to write about puppies I considered it too soft. And possibly inappropriate on a serious, honorable, reverent day like Veteran’s Day.

But then I realized something.
I am able to go gaga over puppies because there are far stronger people in this world who take care of the conflicts I can only imagine in my worst nightmares.

So to them I say thank you for your service.
And, among many other things, thank you for allowing me think about puppies.

Because there is something inspiring about puppies. New life. New legs. Everything new for that matter.

They help us see the world in a new light.
And the many new uses for socks too.

If you are ever feeling blue, I challenge you to do what my friend Courtney taught me… put the search word “puppy” into Pinterest.

Then sit back. Relax. Scroll. And smile.
Thank you for the gift of puppies.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore {playmore!}

{what do you go gaga for?}
