JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 22 :: spring is coming

22 Jan
{bloom}

On my walk to the mailbox today I had a total epiphany … spring is coming! It brings me so much joy to think that the flowers are coming soon. Soon-ish, anyway. Until then…. I’m thinking and praying….bloom, baby, bloom!

Oh, joy!
More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 21 :: tears of joy

21 Jan
{nail biter}

We woke up in the middle of the night to no power. No electricity, no lights, nothing but darkness.

There was a huge windstorm that blew all over town and blew down trees and then blew out all the power in our neighborhood. I took the dogs out in the darkness. I drove to Starbucks just to get my hands on hot water (for my prescribed morning tea).

On my way home I saw a dog walking down the street and noticed he was hopping along — on three legs. He was missing a leg but it didn’t stop him from hopping along after his owners. He looked as happy as could be. As if he had no clue that dogs usually come with four legs.

It may have been a sign.

The power came back on at  12:00 PM.  The Patriot’s game started at 12:05 PM.  Just. In. Time. But, the tension didn’t stop there.

The Patriots played the first three quarters like a dog with three legs. Hopping along but not quite hitting their stride. It wasn’t until the final two minutes OF THE ENTIRE GAME that we Patriot’s fans could breathe again. The Patriots came from behind for the AFC Championship win but a few of us almost had a heart attack in the process.

Justin, of course, was as cool of cucumber. But when the game was over, I cried. Tears of joy – and possibly some pent up, sitting on the edge of my seat pangs of panic and frustration.

Easy to say on this side of it all – winning in the final minutes. And I think that may be where tears of joy come from… the hope that everything will turn out the way you want.

Oh, Joy – on to the Superbowl!

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 17 :: joy ride

17 Jan
{action}

Oh, Joy. I’ve been thinking and pondering about the whole concept of joy (so far) this year. And even though we are only a few weeks into 2018, Joy has been whispering in my ear.

What it is saying is ….”DO SOMETHING!”

So I am listening. I think what it is saying is that to really experience joy we need to take action. Any sort of action. Anything at all. So I have decided to call these little forms of action a Joy Ride.

I’m thinking the Joy Ride can be any sort of action – a walk in the woods, a Sunday drive, a 15-minute yoga routine, a 17-second meditation.

Tonight, I’m in the mood for a 17-second meditation.
Let the Joy Ride begin!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 15 so happy together

15 Jan
{joyful noise}

Joy has me asking lots of questions this year. Like what is joy vs. happiness? Is joy bigger and bolder? Is happiness sweeter and more kind?

I’m not sure what the answer is, to be honest, but it had me look up happy songs. Why not?

So here it is… the Top 20 ‘Happy’ Songs of All Time. Here are a few samples.

What are your happy songs?

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 12 :: taking a joy ride

12 Jan
{choosing}

Ah, the new year is underway! And so is my new promise: Joy. And like a little kid learning a new word I’m trying it on for size.

I am also realizing that joy is a personal statement, a choice, a collection of choices really. As I think about what brings me joy, and what brings me happiness, I’m wondering how I ever learned the difference and the meaning of these words.

  • Happiness
  • Glee
  • Bliss
  • Pleasure
  • Delight
  • Cheer
  • Joy

They are all so similar, yet so very different. I look forward to exploring more this year. Contrasting them and trying them on for size, and truly deciphering joy from the bunch. It will be a joy ride, I’m sure.

Speaking of…..
What brings you joy?

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 9 :: follow your joy

9 Jan
{Joyful noise}

I watched Florence Foster Jenkins, the movie, tonight. It reminded me of expressing your “joy” whatever it may be, and following it to wherever it may lead you — even if you sing off-key. And sing off-key she did!

The movie is based on a true story. But watching her sing, off-key, so publically, made me cringe, with embarrassment for Ms. Florence. And that’s fifty years later just watching a reenactment. It brings up that big bad “P” word and all the baggage the goes with it — perfection.

Maybe this is a note from “Joy” – to remember to tap into what you love the most and follow your dreams — even if you can’t carry a tune.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 6 :: joy of theatre

6 Jan
{The Paramount}

Oh, what fun.

I whisked myself down to Seattle today for appointments – the best of which was at the Paramount Theatre. It was an early, surprise birthday gift from a dear, old friend. We laughed and hugged and then howled with delight to The Book of Mormon (the Broadway kind, of course).

Entertainment Weekly called it:

“…an exhilarating Broadway musical at once revolutionary and classic, funny and obscene, uncompromising in production standards and unafraid of just about anything else.”

I call it absolutely hysterical. Maybe that’s one of the first lessons of joy. Laughing.
Laughing with an old friend. Laughing without abandon.
And maybe just a little bit of laughing at ourselves.

Thank you, Jami!

More tomorrow…

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 5 :: joy of rain

5 Jan
{afternoon showers}

Oh, Joy! It’s raining today. Again. I can’t help but think that Joy is teaching me the importance of singing in the rain.

I am already feeling the power of focusing on my new promise. Joy is calling to me. Joy is whispering to me. Joy is trying to swing open the doors to a whole new way of living (joy de vivre?)

Even in the rain.
And, could there be a better lesson when one lives in the state of Washington?

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 3 :: joy of creating

3 Jan
{al the paints}

I created tonight. And nothing brings me closer to joy than the feeling I get when I’m being creative. The best part was ….It was for and with a friend — and that’s the best kind of creating I can think of!

Here’s to the joy of creating.
