BLOG – GIFT DAY 229 :: who will braid your hair?

19 Aug
Last night I dreamt of my mother.
It’s not ironic, since surgery is this week.In my dream she was braiding my hair as she always did on basketball game days… and surgery days too.I could actually feel her hands running through my hair. It was lovely and so disappointing when I opened my eyes to just a dream.Upon waking my first thought was heart-sinking…. “Who is going to braid my hair?”  I panicked at first, as if it was something I left off my pre-surgery-to-do-list.

When I completely awoke, after a cup of coffee, I rolled my eyes as the 39-year old in me realized…. That’s silly. I’ll just pull my hair up in a pony tail like I do everyday. Way more practical and easy — and I can do it myself.

My journey starts tonight!
We leave for Portland in a few hours.

But, as I get closer to surgery day, I realize something of the obvious. This journey has been going on for a very long time.

It’s not “just this” surgery I am dealing with, it’s the whole lot of them, the compounding of years under a medical lens.  The panicking over every lump or bump I discover on my body. The fear that the end is near, as it has been since I was seventeen.

And that is my work, my lesson of sorts in this lifetime.
To move through the fear with ease and grace. To breathe in and out and not get all turned upside down.

It’s funny, really. I thought my “lovemore-fearless” journey was over. I swam with SHARKS for God sake. I have made peace with spiders and scorpions and water and waves.

But I haven’t made peace with the piece inside my soul that unravels with the tiniest bit of bad news over my health, my body, my cells.

That is my work, my lesson of sorts in this lifetime.
To embrace it all with fearless grace.
And to remember to breathe.

Ironically, I find myself at 39, again looking up at a surgeon’s light waiting for a diagnosis and a plan.  Except this time there is no one to braid my hair. I must rely on my own hair bending and twisting talents.

The good news is — I know I can.

That is my work, my lesson of sorts in this lifetime.
And, I know nothing would make Mama Sling more proud.

So, off to Portland we go.
Pony tail waving in the wind.

More tomorrow.
