JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 261 :: kindness is…

17 Sep

Taking a break.

Ah… Sundays are the best. Good food. Good friends. Good times.

Sundays are a moment to breathe. Relax. Watch a little football and a little bit of the Emmies.

Kindness is reminding me that sometimes the BEST kind of kindness is taking a break.

More tomorrow….

Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 255 :: be a welcoming neighbor

12 Sep

Kindly.

New neighbors moved in today. They oohed and ahhed over Pup and Brady as I walked the dogs up the hill.

As I was walking the dogs back home I realized that I should have gone over and introduced myself. I should have done something KIND to welcome our new neighbors.

It’s on my Kindness List for tomorrow.

More tomorrow….
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 209 :: kind surprises continued

20 Aug

Treasures.

I shared the Whale Watch surprise yesterday, but what I didn’t share was this surprise:

It’s a pretty little piece, a necklace, pendant, beautiful treasure on the end of a chain. We spotted while in Friday Harbor.

I should have known something was up Justin’s sleeve when he kept pointing to jewelry in the shop cases and saying they were pretty. This was the one I reacted to the most, this pendant of coral in the shape of a tree. We left the store, upon many stores and I forgot about it.

Then, on the last hour home, as we sat on the boat and watched the water move by our window, I looked down at the table and saw a white box. It was a jewelry box.

“What’s that?” I looked at Justin who wore a sly grin on his face.

“I don’t know,” he said, “you should open it up and see.”

It was, of course, the pendant I had seen in the store in Friday Harbor much earlier in the day. He has done this to me before. And, as always, I seem to be clueless, never realizing what he is up to until it is too late (or just right, I suppose!).

It’s a beautiful little pendant. It reminds me of our date with the whales on a sunny Saturday afternoon – and a few islands in-between. But, most of all, it reminds of the young man I first met when we were seventeen and the sweet husband I have now married.

He has always had a gift for gifting and surprises. And it’s not limited to the kind of treasures I wear around my neck. He is so generous with his time and his thoughts for everyone he loves. Sometimes I wonder if all those around him see what I see — a mind which is constantly examining others and figuring out what they want and need and wish for most.

So in this year of kindness, I realize this — the best teacher of how to be kind has been right before my eyes, at my side, holding my hand and watching me with those very observant brown eyes.

What he has taught me most is this:
Sometimes the kindest act is just listening.
Listening to those you love.

And that is a treasure.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 204 :: kind of big

15 Aug

Truck.

This is a truck. One really BIG truck.

I had to rent a car today and the friendly staff at Enterprise offered me this big beauty. So, of course being one up for any adventure, I said, Yes.

Truthfully, it’s been a very long time since I drove a truck. And, it’s been a REALLY long time since I drove a truck this big. We have to go all the way back to high school and to a 16-year-old Jamie who just received the biggest ticket to freedom – her driver’s license.

My sister and I couldn’t agree on a car schedule so I decided I would just drive my dad’s old Ford truck (with a capital T) that sat out in front of the house. It was used for camping trips mostly, but I decided if I packed it with my girlfriends and basketball team it would be cool enough for school. We called it The. Big. Blue. Bomber.

I drove The BIg Blue Bomber everywhere. School. Drive-In. Basketball Practice. And everywhere else in between. Okay, it was Idaho, so it wasn’t that weird. But still…. in a world of cute little cars it was a bold choice.

Today, in another bold choice, I looked at the Ram 1500 and said yes. Not only because it was funny, and an adventure — but also a little bit because it made me remember that confident teenage girl who decided SHE could drive a truck to school – and everywhere else.

And I think it’s a “Kind” move to listen to that little teenage girl once in a while.
Even when she wants to drive an enormous truck.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 203 :: monday love

14 Aug

Count.

It’s such a Monday. And in moments like these I try to remember what someone once told me:

Everything counts. So count everything.

So true when it comes to kindness. And Mondays.
Make it count.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS DAY 8 :: sharing

8 Jan

Money Honey.

Today I spent the afternoon working at the bookstore. My favorite local bookstore called Village Books. And my favorite way to work – with a coffee in hand.

Today there was a bonus musical performance, a two-man string band, which led to my Intentional Act of Kindness. I gave 30 cents to the band’s tip jar, intentionally. It felt both awful and kind of awkward.

“I don’t have any cash on me. This is all I have.” I apologized as I placed my three dimes in the band’s tip jar.

“Every amount counts.” The young men smiled back at me.

Ahhhh… yes. I thought as I smiled and walked away. Nice lesson Kindness. Every amount counts.

Enjoy your week, kind soul.
Make it count.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
