JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS  DAY 351 :: christmas kindness

18 Dec
{rock star}

Today I continue the month of Christmas Kindness!

Last night, after spending days upon days in bed, I finally surfaced. I crawled out of that protective cocoon and faced the light of day. And the fact that I ran out of Gilmore Girls episodes…

Amidst it all, I also felt something new… Aches. All. Over. My body, bless its heart and soul, was done with being sick but still had some healing to do. I could barely move my shoulders with all the aches and pains and finally asked Justin if we had a heating pad… or something that could act like a heating pad. He’s good at finding things so whenever I need something I have learned to ask. To put Justin on the task.

He thought about it for a while and then, just when I thought he had forgotten he walked outside. In the mud and rain mind you. When he returned inside he had his hands full of rocks.

“What are those for?” I asked.
“For your back. I’m going to heat them up, like a hot rock massage.” He replied matter of factly.

Oh… My…  Love… he had me at hot rock massage. My most favorite spa treatment in the world. But could we do it at home?

Turns out, the answer is yes! Justin washed and heated the rocks and then placed them on my back. And then heated them up again for a second round. They weren’t perfect like the rocks I have had in spas … but it was perfectly timed.

It was so gloriously relaxing.
And he is so amazingly kind. A rock star in my book.

It’s times like these when I realize that for all the KINDNESS I have been trying to infuse into my life and others this year, all I really needed to do was open my eyes. Sometimes being kind is remembering to ask for help.

Because the helpers will show up.
Sometimes with rocks in their hands.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 62 :: rock my heart

3 Mar

Day 62. Rock my heart.

My new favorite heart rock …from the hands of an 8-year-old. The first prototype of her line of rocks (for sale!).

It only cost me a dollar… but the moment (to my heart) was priceless.

More tomorrow.

P.S. Yoga done!

{what rocks your heart?}

GIFT DAY 007: rock of ages, heart of gold (or granite)

7 Jan

We walked the beach yesterday morning.

It was a beautiful January day, warm and bright. The ocean was calm, the beach was full of people walking their dogs. And the sand was full of rocks too.

So Justin and I made a game of finding all the heart-shaped rocks we could spot. We found big ones and little ones. Green ones. Red ones. Sea glass ones too.

Part of the fun is finding the rocks that actually resemble a heart — because sometimes you really have to cheat it. Like visually morphing a triangle. Or holding the sideways Salvador Dalí -ish heart on its side to make it work.

But yesterday I spotted the most perfect heart-shaped rock, just shining up at the sky.

So I placed it in the palm of my hand and gave it to Justin with a big, silly, grin on my face.

“This is for you. Don’t ever, ever lose it!”

It was also my gift of the day.
From my heart, in the form of a rock.

I’m learning that not all gifts have to be big or expensive or outlandishly amazing.

Sometimes they are just a rock.

Straight from the heart.

More tomorrow.

Day 258: the rock solid shape of your heart #love

15 Sep

When I arrived home after our funny little thing the other night, I found a pile of rocks on my desk.

Actually, I didn’t see them at all. When I crawled into bed Justin finally asked, “Did you see what I left on your desk?”

“You left something on my desk?” I said with half sleepy eyes. Justin just gave me that look. The look I have come to know as Jamie Stop Complaining.

I peeled myself out of bed, somewhat annoyed and practically sleep walking into the other room to see what was so urgent it couldn’t wait on my desk until morning.

It was a pile of rocks.
But not just any rocks.

They were all heart shaped.

Justin found them on the beach that day and reported back to me. “I kept seeing a theme so I brought them home. I thought maybe you could write a blog about it.”

Boy, can I.
That man constantly surprises me.

Just when I think he has left me a pile of rocks I realize he has left me the shape of his heart.

I just have to listen and trust and pay attention more.
