JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 7 – KINDNESS DAY 7 :: kind of niceness

7 Jan

Today I was kind in a regular-sort-of-day way. Mostly to my doggies.

I am a puppy pushover. The dogs get what they want. If they want something they come to me. They paw at my leg. They whine in my direction. Because I cave. I am probably a dog trainer’s worst nightmare. I can’t help it… they pull at my heartstrings.

Today Brady got what he wanted. A hug. A sit-on-my-lap pawfully sweet hug.

And Pup got what he wanted. A pawfully cute kiss and lots of attention — and too much water.

And that was probably the extent of my intentional kindness today. And, you know what? I am okay with that. I yearned for a dog for half my adult life. I couldn’t convince my ex to be a dog owner. It caused me an overwhelmingly intense sort of sadness. The kind that is hard to explain to others, but you know it deep in your heart. When you’re a dog person you need a dog.

And now I have two. So, yeah, maybe I’m a pushover. But I waited for it and I have earned it. And I do enjoy every second of it. Even the bumpy, barky, messy days.

Which reminds me of another kind of kindness: enjoying what you have.
Enjoy what you have, kind soul.

More tomorrow.

P.S.  Challenge #1 is still on!  Are you Practicing Respect?
If you choose to accept this challenge, try one of the following acts:
– admire someone with kind words
– point out a particular and appreciated detail with kind words
– use thoughtful words to compliment someone on an achievement

BLOG – GIFT DAY 203 :: are you a giver or a taker?

22 Jul
It’s a powerful question.I heard the question asked on a marketing webinar and it struck me deeply.

Are you a giver or a taker?

Of course, the speaker was talking about your business, but I have to admit, it reminded me of something I learned as a little girl: you get what you give.

It sounds so trite but it is so true. And, at the core of this promise I have made about abundance.

Today continues my Card Crusade and I officially ran out of stamps! Ironically, I also gained something today too (two things!).

Two cards arrived in the mail:

I adore these cards and the people who sent them. Thank you Kelly and Diane!

The more cards I send out, the more love I feel from giving and sharing and letting the people I adore know it.

Sure, it’s just a piece of paper when it’s all said and done (although these cards aren’t just any piece of paper!) — but it is also a powerful force of love — because the thought, which counts the most, goes unsaid too often.

Today I also mailed two cards (because yesterday was Sunday). The cards are going to two women who seem to be my light in times of darkness. One is like a sister, the other like an aunt with impeccable timing and incredible advice. One is a business dynamo, my confidant, my soul sister.  The other is a nurse, who sings in the choir and doesn’t like that Facebook keeps changing its format!

Both are mothers. Both are incredibly special women. Can you guess who?

So, what do you have to say or share?
What are you waiting for?

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 198 :: ask for what you want

17 Jul
Today, I continue my CARD CRUSADE.
My little way of saying thank you and spreading some abundance.

Yesterday’s card went to someone who loves watermelon martinis…and the Patriots…and her children…and shopping. It is Pam Peterson from Massachusetts!

Pam has been such a wonderful supportive shining light in my life. She loves everyone around her like a mother — meaning she wraps you up in a hug and then tells you exactly what you need to hear. She doesn’t hold anything back, not her love, her laughter, her incredibly addictive chocolate chip cookies — or her sage advice.

People like Pam don’t come around that often. She is the perfect balance of love and light with a little kick in the pants.

Precisely why I love her so much!

Enjoy your card Pam!

Now, for today’s card…. it is going out in the mail with a little reminder to all of us.

Ask for what you want.

You want a better job?
A raise?
A better situation.
A fun weekend, a good conversation, a supportive hug, a phone call, a ring….

Ask for it.

Or, in this case, a card in the mail!

This person asked for a card so she’s getting one. I love the initiative as much as I love her too.

It’s a good reminder for us all… if there’s something we want we need to ask for it.

More tomorrow.

BLOG – GIFT DAY 196 :: for better or worse?

15 Jul
Today, I continue my CARD CRUSADE.
My little way of saying thank you and spreading some abundance.

And I have a question:
Is your handwriting better or worse than it was five years ago?

I find, as I write out these cards each day, that my handwriting is strained. As if my hands have forgotten how to write with pen and ink.

However, I can now type much faster.

And my thumbs, well, even though they are stubby, they can text pretty darn fast.

But my penmanship — that was honed over years of practicing calligraphy — has suffered from this digital revolution.

Just one more reason to get out a piece of paper and write. The old fashioned way.

And, to commemorate this newfound exercise for my fingers… I have added a little inspiration to my desk.

It feels like a real writing desk now. Flowers and prayers included.

Yesterday’s card (which had to be mailed today because it was Sunday) went out to a very special person.

Her name is Laura. And every time I see the sunflowers in our garden I think of her. I’m not sure why …sunflowers just remind me of my sunny friend, who I met in college as a freshman.

Laura has been with me through thick and thin and back again. From my mother’s funeral to my divorce decree, to jobs coming and going…

Laura has been that friend that will drop everything and find a reason to call, or write, or send a card.

Speaking of cards…
I have the best news and I can’t wait to share it with you…. tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I will also share who received today’s card in the mail.

Here’s your hint:
– she was in the restaurant biz
– she is super fun
– she loves dogs

More tomorrow.

GIFT DAY 031: it’s so hard to keep my mouth shut

31 Jan

It is the last day of January.

The first month of the year has flown by.

Hard to believe, isn’t it?

How are those New Year Resolutions treating you?

I find that it’s a daily commitment, this goal thing. And, actually, it’s more of a promise for me. Because promises are deeper, more personal, more pressing and most important.

promise, the promise daily, the promise 365, jamie eslinger
So far, I’ve kept my promise to give a gift away each and every day this year.

But it hasn’t been easy. I’ve almost missed some days and had to log-on to the iTunes Store at the eleventh hour just to send a quick gift off to a special friend.

Those gifts are no less important, just rushed.

So far my promise has me questioning, “Just what is a GIFT anyway?”

Some days it’s purely physical, material goods.
Other days it’s my time and attention (which is admittedly hard to focus).

Most days though, my gifts are love.
And those are the best ones.

Today for instance, I met a new friend and couldn’t help but burst at my seams to recommend a book for her to read. Later on, as I sat in my car, I thought, “She must think I’m crazy pushing a book on her.”

But the more I thought about it the more I realized my action came from love. You see, when I KNOW about something that will help someone else, well ….

The problem is (and I know this to be true) all the information and books in the world will not do what one moment of listening will.

I realize that I should have kept my mouth shut.
Which is sometimes the hardest act of will but the biggest act of love.

It’s a gift.

More tomorrow.

GIFT DAY 023: JOY! to the world

23 Jan

I’m obsessed with the word “joy” today.

I’ve been obsessed with words lately. Mostly because of my promise this year to explore abundance.

The more you say the word out loud the funnier it sounds. And, really, I have yet to meet anyone who defines “abundance” the same way.

I have a sneaking suspicion that JOY is what ties abundance together. So today I took my interest to Pinterest.

Here’s what popped up on my screen when I searched for JOY:

joy, the promise daily, the promise 365, jamie eslinger

You’ve got clothes, books, children, food …you name it and everything else including the kitchen sink.

And some cute puppy photos too.

Although, my very favorite JOY pin is this one titled:

determiniation and joy, jamie eslinger, the promise daily, the promise 365

So here’s to determination and joy.
Maybe that combination is the underlining meaning of abundance? Stick with me, we’ll find out…

More tomorrow.

P.S. I shared my gift of the day on The Promise Daily — sign up if you haven’t yet. It might bring you joy?

{What does JOY mean to you? Ponder over a pot of coffee, call your best friend, or share with me on the comment section of the blog below.}

GIFT DAY 008: paying it forward and random acts of giving

8 Jan

starbucks, jamie eslinger, thepromise365.com, thepromisedaily.com

My gift yesterday was coffee.

As I walked into our local Starbucks, my mind flashed back to the story of a little boy named Jayden Lamb.

I recently heard about this nine-year old cancer patient from Midland Michigan.

He earned his angel wings on November 27, 2012 right before he told his father that he would never get married, because…

“God needs me more, I was your angel before I was born.”

After his funeral, his parents were so moved by the love and support they received from the community they walked into a Starbucks and bought coffee for the next person in line, with a note that said:

“Paying it Forward, Jayden-Style.”

It spurred a chain reaction that has hit everywhere from Michigan to California, and it was so inspiring Jayden was listed as one of Yahoo’s 12 Most Inspirational Stories of 2012.

So yesterday, I payed it forward Jayden-Style.

Except I didn’t have anything to write on or leave a note. I just asked the barista to add a cup of coffee to my ticket and give it to the next person in line.

The barista grinned at me and said, “Sure! We do this all the time.”

“Really?” I asked back.

“Yes, it happens all the time in the Drive-Thru. Sometimes the line of paying it forward continues for hours at a time.”

And that made me smile.

Really, isn’t it that easy?

More tomorrow.
P.S. My gift of the day today is to pay it forward to you!  The first person to write “Paying it forward – Jayden Style” on the comment section of today’s blog post gets a free cup of coffee at Starbucks from me.  And we ALL get to remember the inspiring life of Jayden.
P.P.S. Did you sign into The Promise Daily yet? More goodies there.

Day 001: what is a happy new year?

1 Jan

We did something crazy last night.
New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

At least we ATTEMPTED to watch the ball drop on the center of the universe. One problem… so did everyone else in the universe.

New York City wasn’t just a BIG APPLE last night, it was one BIG MAGNET.

People lined the streets: families, grandparents, children in strollers, crazy college students in shorts with bare legs and tiny t-shirts!

It seemed as if EVERY walk of life was there.
We were magnetized. We were called to the ball.

It made me think:  How do we BE a magnet for what we want?
Today marks Year Three of The Promise 365 — my promise to myself to stay accountable for what I want to create in my life.

This year my promise is to explore ABUNDANCE.

How am I going to do that?  By giving something away every single day for 365 Days in a row — and write about it.  That’s 365 gifts.
Because there is a powerful exchange in giving.

My first gift is to you.
The Promise 365 is morphing into The Promise Daily. My gift to you is to help you stay on track with your goals.

What do you want more of?
What kind of magnet do you want to hold to the world?
What will you attract?

Just kidding about the crack remark.
Wanted to make sure you were following along.

But seriously…
What do you want to magnetize in your life?
What ball will you drop?
What will you ask 2013 to bring you?

What is your Happy New Year?
