JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 the last post & the grand finale

31 Dec

{trust}

I dreamt of this blog last night. Then I woke up and in a daze realizing I forgot to write a blog post. I have never missed a post in nine years. Apparently, two chocolate martinis and a night of fun with friends were enough to allow my mind to drift off to sleep without a blog in between. Maybe it’s a sign, that it is time to wrap up this adventure in blogging.

So today, I present the grand finale. The last post. The final blog. It hardly seems possible.
There have been some amazing moments, including:

Spa moments where this blog started:

Paris Redo moments where I learned my name means LOVE.

Surprise moments with friends across the pond!

A fearless Swimming with Sharks moment!

Rafting the Grand Canyon moments

And there have been the years of big promises:
Peak Performance which led me to surgery and Oprah (thank you Kim!)

There was a year of Bliss and Mary Poppins!

And that year of Kindness where we finally tied the knot — as a surprise pop-up wedding at the family reunion in Estes Park!

Image may contain: 21 people, including Mike Everist, Danny Pickering, Beverly J. Everist, Jaynane Aiken, Nicole Holub, Justin Jay Aiken, Judy Sawyer Davis and Andrew Holub, people smiling, people standing, wedding, tree and outdoor

There were messages of Joy…

And there was that time that I did Yoga for a Year

There were trips from the Grand Canyon

No photo description available.

To Lake Powell

Image may contain: 6 people, including Andrew Holub and Ali Everist, people smiling, people standing, mountain, child, sky, outdoor and nature

To my homeland of Germany and the little town of Esslingen

There have been friends along the way:

There have been moments with family:

Reuniting with family:

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, people sitting and indoor
Image may contain: 3 people, including Julie Black, people smiling, people standing, night and indoor

And memories pulled from the scrapbook:

There was always Pup right by my side, including my suitcase:

And then there was Brady…lovable and mischievous:

There have been teams:

Taking one for the team:

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling

And there were storms:

But the best part was surviving the storm:

There was marching in Seattle:

Image may contain: 4 people, including Kathleen Petrzelka, people smiling

And cheering in Boston:

Image may contain: 2 people

And drinking on Lake Powell

Image may contain: 1 person

And at music festivals:

Image may contain: 3 people, including Lisa Roe, people smiling

I have learned to fall and to fly:

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling

So many of my posts and inspiration I owe to this one amazing angel, Mama Sling

And there has always been this guy, right by my side, looking out for my best interest, picking me up when I needed it, and always, always, always surprising me along the way:

Image may contain: 16 people, including Justin Jay Aiken and Heather Stearns, people smiling

It’s hard to believe we are entering a new decade. And yet, the timing feels right. If I have learned anything it is to follow your dreams, set a goal and make a promise. The gift is the adventure. All you have to do is show up.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for reading. Thank you for your notes of encouragement and words of wisdom. You have made a difference in my life, and this adventure would not have been the same without you.

Happy New Year.
Happy New Decade.
May your dreams and hearts desires find you along the way.

For one last time…Trust me!

You got this.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 today – 5 days to go

26 Dec

{trust}

There are 5 days left of The Promise 365.

Tonight I am sitting around the fire with my husband and his extended family, feeling the full effects of being present… from the Christmas tree to the photo books, to the shared memories and the shared laughter.

When I was younger my favorite book was called The Precious Present. It was a fable about learning to live in the present moment, and how valuable that precious moment is, more valuable than all the riches of the world. I wrote about my personal story of this book on Day 160 of my first year of blogging, in a blog post called Your First Suit

The ironic thing about this blog is that it has forced me to be present to each and every day. For nine years. This blog has been about a promise but it has become so very precious. It has counted the days and the stories and the moments of life. A life lived with family and friends and people I love. If nothing else, it has captured the art of being present.

Trust me when I say, we have nothing but the present. Treat it as precious.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 surprises – 6 days to go

25 Dec

{trust}

There are 6 days left of The Promise 365.

Last night we bought our annual Christmas ornaments. It’s our new tradition after our wedding and first married Christmas. We now have two years of ornaments. Last year included a Patriots one and a memorial dog one for our #1 Pup. This year we chose a Star Wars duo of Rae and Kylo Ren and a sentimental anniversary one with interchangeable anniversary years 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 etc…

It made me think about the twists and turns of life. We could be putting a 25-year ornament on the tree if we had stayed together since we first met. But that was not our destiny. Instead, we are celebrating 2 years married.

And that is the lesson that Trust as reminded me of most this year… we must trust the twists and turns of life, the winding paths, and the adventures along the way. There will be many momentos and memories but they are always sweeter because they are a surprise.

Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 keep playing – 12 days to go

19 Dec

{trust}

There are 12 days left of The Promise 365!

I thought today was Friday, the entire day, up until I got in my car and headed home. Then I realized it was Thursday. Which was very disappointing, because, you know… expectations.

But then tonight, we spent hours on the phone playing games with our niece. The game goes like this:  name a letter, and then the other person has to draw an animal that begins with that letter. It’s simple and it’s fun, it’s simply fun.

So you see, sometimes Thursday nights are better than Friday days. We just have to enjoy the moment and play with life.

In so many ways, this blog over the past nine years has been an exercise in playing with life. From Mexico to the Grand Canyon to France to Germany, from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again, I have chronicled the highlights of each and every day. It has been a privilege and in many ways a game. A game against the clock of time, the 24 hours in a day, to find a theme, a moment, a memory or a story to tell and share and find meaning in it, or at least a few words to type about it.

It hasn’t always been easy, it hasn’t always been fun, but it has been a privilege and an honor and labor of love. Most of all, it has been an amazing way to play the game of life. And while this is the last year of The Promise 365, it’s not the last you will hear from me. That I can promise.

And, to that, I say, keep playing.

Trust me!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9 walk toward the rainbow – 13 days to go

18 Dec

{trust}

There are 13 days left of The Promise 365!

Tonight, I enjoyed a wonderful dinner with a friend who I have not seen in too many years. It was a reunion of hearts, and memories and our younger selves. So much time has passed and so many life moments have happened, and so many roads have been traveled, but there we were, crossing paths again.

It reminds me that life is full of twists and turns, but if you continue to walk toward the rainbow the journey will be worth the adventure it holds in your heart.

In so many ways, that’ is what this blogging adventure has been about too. Walking toward the rainbow.

Jamie’s Blog – Year 9:: what you need – 14 days to go

17 Dec

There are 14 days left of The Promise 365!

“You already have what you need.” My dear teacher and mentor and medicine woman taught me this many years ago. It was in the middle of surgeries and doctors appointments and all the anxiety that comes with that sort of thing. She was always so wise and so ahead of me in the lessons of life. She also told me that was why she could be my teacher, she would always be a step ahead of me. Until she wasn’t.

Today, I took the day off and mostly addressed Christmas cards. It was a rainy, sleety, snowy sort of day and the perfect hot cocoa Christmas card backdrop. I love paper and cards, and I love addressing them and using my calligraphy markers to make pretty little letters. So while I was looking up addresses and writing out beautiful little letters I was taken aback when I saw her mailing address next on my list.

This will be the last year of The Promise 365 and it will be the first year I won’t be able to send my teacher a Christmas greeting. She is now gone, and I am now on my own two feet when it comes to life lessons. She is no longer a step ahead of me, rather she is somewhere else in the heavens and the stars. Luckily, she left me with that precious gift.

“You already have what you need.” I can hear her say to me again as if she were right next to my side.

Indeed, I do. Mostly because of all the great teachers who have always been one step ahead of me.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9
bows – 16 days to go
{trust}

There are 16 days left of The Promise 365!

I love Sunday afternoons. Today, I spent the day wrapping presents, watching the Hallmark Channel and watching the New England Patriots win. Brady sat next to me the entire time, tuckered out from all the activity.  While watching was the easy part, doing is always harder.

I can watch my share of Hallmark Christmas specials, and I can cheer on Patriots touchdowns, but I cannot wrap a present as my mother. I’m not knocking my own skills. I am a wrapping paper expert. I know all the secrets to making a present pop, including creasing the corners and lining up the design on the papers just perfectly. Alas, I cannot make a bow like Mama Sling.

I tried. Many times. I started over many times too. I used tape (it snapped) and yarn (it broke) and wire (it slipped).

So much of this blog has been dedicated to the fond memories I have of Mama Sling. There are so many amazing memories and moments, and there are so many incredible things she taught me. But she didn’t teach me how to make her famous bows.

The bows that she spent hours on, the bows that she wouldn’t let us smoosh under the tree. We had to Tetris all the presents under the tree to specifically make sure no bow would touch another bow. There was no bow smooshing allowed. This won’t be a problem this Christmas since I cannot replicate the Mama Sling bow.

But that’s not really the point, is it? I still have the memories of her laughter and her love and her magical Christmas bows. Even though I do not have her or her bow making talent, I have her in my heart, which keeps her by my side.

The best part of Christmas is not the gifts we buy, but the moments we give each other that last long beyond the time we are together. Thank you, Mama Sling, for being by my side throughout these past nine years, and these past nine promises, and every Christmas in between.

Even if I can’t make a bow to save my life!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9
keep showing up – 17 days to go
{trust}

There are 17 days left of The Promise 365! Seventeen days left to show up. That has been the secret of this promise process. The biggest lesson of all. The power move is showing up. That’s all it takes to find the magic inside of you.

All the magic of the world is inside of you. So keep shining!

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 9
power – 20 days to go
{trust}

There are 20 days left of The Promise 365!

Sometimes the most simple things are the most powerful. I have learned many lessons over the past nine years, including love, fearlessness, abundance, peak performance, bliss, joy, and kindness. All of them have one thing in common, trust.

It’s funny to be on this side of making promises. Now, that I know this is my last one (who would have thought trust would be the grand finale?) I am in awe of how they all connect together through the power of trust.

It takes trust to love. It takes trust to be kind. It takes trust to go after peak performance and to follow your bliss, tap into joy, and live in abundance.

It is the simple power of trusting yourself. And that is simply powerful.

So here’s to trusting yourself in all that you do.
