JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 8 – DAY 43 :: a lesson in love

14 Feb

I have to admit, it’s been a rough Valentine’s Day around here. What was to be our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple was starting to look like it could be the last day we would have Pup.

His back legs gave out last night right before bed. We watched him all night, and there were moments of touch and go.  Then, miraculously, he made a rebound around noon.

Ironically, it was right as the mailman arrived.

I was on a conference call watching Pup’s every move as he slept at my feet. Brady heard the familiar mail truck sounds outside the door and began to bark his dutiful warning sounds. Right then, Pup perked up and started barking too. Then he ran to the door.

Halalueleah. Bestill my aching heart. Pup has been fine ever since. But it’s a reminder to me about life and love.

Love can hurt so good.

Pup will be seventeen in a few months, and part of me thinks he’s been with us this long because we have loved him so hard. Someday it will come. And we will grieve. But not as much as we have all loved each other.

And that might just be the biggest message joy has to share with me. Love and Joy. Joy and Love. Such a fine pair.

A reflection of what we put into life and what returns to us in spades.

And in the end, it was the best Valentine’s Day ever.
Happy Valentine’s Day – remember you are loved.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 42 :: fffffriday

11 Feb

Day 42. A good thing.

Tomorrow is Friday. And, as my father would say, that’s a good thing.

Here’s another good thing, my favorite artist Bren is back in studio with a few artist tips for making Valentine’s Day Cupids (perfect for kids or Kids-At-Heart).

Thanks, Bren!

It reminds me of those old Valentine’s Days of the past. Making crafty love notes and glittery, sticky cards for everyone in school, with a few conversation hearts glued on top. (Which we ATE by the way.)

This day and age, I’m thinking of LOVE in a very different way. And this year, in particular, I’m thinking of some yoga stretching, mind-bending love notes….to myself. Self-love. Seems to be one of the lessons trying to stick with me this year. As if my body is whispering…

Take care of yourself.
Take care of yourself.
Take care of yourself.

More tomorrow.

JAMIE’S BLOG – DAY 44 :: love and cuteness overload

13 Feb
Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. And I sit here with a Vizsla cuddled up on my lap as I try to write this post. It’s his way of saying I LOVE YOU in dog speak. That’s why they call them Velcro Dogs. And it totally melts my heart.

Tonight, as I sat on the floor, playing with the dogs, Justin announced. “It’s a good thing you love dogs so much.”

It’s true. I do. And I waited a very long time to have my own dog as an adult. In my previous life/marriage I couldn’t have a dog. It was forbidden for reasons I still don’t understand. So now, as it is for most people who wait a long time to get what they want, I appreciate the dogs in my life. Greatly.

Bliss, if you will.

So if you need an overload of cuteness before Valentine’s Day, just type the word “Vizsla” into the Pinterest search bar. You will see this!  Or, just type in whatever it is that your heart pines for, longs for, dreams of…. Loves.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

GIFT DAY 045: happy valentine’s day :: my gift to you!

14 Feb

It’s V-Day around here.

To celebrate, Justin and I made a pact to be low-key, and just write each other love letters.

(I love Love Letters!)

So what did I wake up to this morning? Two cards (one from the dogs) and a gift. The gift was the first season of GIRLS which I casually dropped in a conversation months ago.

That man.
I swear he remembers almost everything, and is sweeter than sugar sometimes.

So… now it’s MY TURN to give a GIFT.
And it’s for you!

I’m giving ONE of these away today…

Will it be my favorite heart-shaped rock?

GIFT DAY 044 lovemore+fearless valentine’s day

13 Feb

I looked up the best Valentine’s Day movies today and this is what I found from the Washington Times: The List: Best Valentine’s Day movies

They seem so CLASSIC but almost out of time and place.

So I made my own Valentine’s Day Movie List…
(because I’m a GIRL!).
But, FIRST… I want to take you on a walk of our little beach-front neighborhood — and what it looks like today.
We surveyed the damage. Amazing that we still have a porch left once you see what is floating in the marsh… refrigerator anyone?
Justin found our stairs. They were 1/2 mile up the road. Along with someone’s chair.
The wind certainly did some damage too, which was mostly why everyone was without power for so long. Downton Trees?

I’m sure the Open House will be rescheduled for the house that this sign belongs too… hopefully the house is still in shape to sell.

It’s not this one. Which is now condemned, the house is losing a porch and a roof.

The windows didn’t fair so well on this house, along with the porch. The area where this house is located in the neighborhood definitely got hit the hardest. (It’s less than a 1/2 mile from us.)

And, our stair-less beach view. You can see the bolt that sticks out, where the stairs previously attached to the house.

We are lucky this storm wasn’t worse.
In some odd way it’s made the neighbors more friendly, more loving, more willing to pitch in and help.

And that makes me wonder — why can’t we ALWAYS care this much about each other, our neighbors, or our community? Why can’t we always have an abundance of helping hands to go around?

Good thing there is a day devoted to love, right around the corner. Like… tomorrow!

Here are my top Valentine’s Day movies!

  • Sliding Doors
  • Clueless
  • The Notebook

I would love to see yours!

More tomorrow.

Day 44: lovemore monday :: a love letter to love songs

13 Feb

As you know, I entered this year determined to be fearless. But, I don’t want more fear or less in my life.  I want more love.  So I made up a new word, lovemore!   That’s why Lovemore Mondays are here.

Last week I shared a love story about Dog Food.

Today’s Lovemore Monday is a love letter to Music.

Dear Music:

I Will Always Love You.
Really, I will. And, with the passing of Whitney you seem to be more on my mind than ever — the melody of love and its ability to move my head, heart, body and soul.

So today, in honor of you, I put together my top ten list of love songs. The soundtrack of my life and times, right now. I’m sure in ten more years this list will be different, but right now, this is how you have inspired me.

Thank you for the music.
May there always be love songs, just like you!

P.S. What are your favorite love songs?

Here are my Top Ten (in no particular order):

1. The Best Part – Blues Traveler

2. In Your Eyes – Peter Gabriel

3. Fields of Gold – Sting

4. You Are The Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder

5.  1, 2, 3, 4 – Plain White Tees

6. Have I Told You Lately That I Love You – Rod Stewart

7. All I Want Is You -Barry Louis Polisar’s (Juno Soundtrack)

8. The Golden State – John Doe

9. Just Breathe – Pearl Jam (from Austin City Limits)

10. I Will Always Love You – Whitney Houston

Day 45: love, true love

14 Feb

“And on the 45th day she earned a hot rock massage.”
She says with a grin on her face.

Oh, wait! That’s me.

Today is officially Day 7 of the daily yoga practice which began last Tuesday. I promised myself a little reward, a super fabulous hot rock massage, if I could keep the streak alive for one whole week. That’s seven consecutive days, but who’s counting?

Today, I am here to report back.

To some, I know, seven days straight of yoga is no earth shattering record. But, to me, it is. I can honestly say, “I have never done that before.”

I can also say, it feels great.
Sure, my muscles are sore and tight, but with each passing day I have been able to stretch further and longer. What feels even better than finally holding a high to low push up is knowing I set a goal, stuck with it, and followed through.

That is the beauty of a self-imposed goal.
I am in total control. It’s up to me to downward dog-it. I can’t sit around waiting for someone else to take over my yoga mat and do it for me.

Makes me think, where else in my life have I sat around and waited for others to take the first step?

Um… how about the obvious?
Valentine’s Day.

What a crazy holiday?
One where we are bombarded by images of people sitting and waiting for others to send flowers and chocolate. I mean, really?

I have had some amazingly wonderful and lovely surprises in my life on Valentine’s Day (last year, Justin filled an entire room full of pink and red balloons).

I have also had some really bleak, soul searching, how-did-I-end-up-so-lonely-on-Valentine’s-Day pity parties too, with Ben in one hand and Jerry in the other.

Aren’t both self-imposed?
I believe it is the expectation of love that drives the experience.

Note to self:
Just like yoga starts by taking the first step and placing your stubby toes on a mat, love starts inside YOU too.

It’s your job to shoot the arrow through your own heart, and then share love with the world. Love was meant for sharing.

Note to you:
If you’re reading tonight, I hope you find time to give yourself a little Valentine’s Day party full of love and self care. Whether or not your flowers have already arrived.

In the meantime, I will be finding room in my schedule for a hot rock massage!
