JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 261 :: a call for kindness

24 Sep

Day 261: Human Kindness.

I have been thinking about kindness for the past 24-hours, and my Random Act of Kindness commitment this week.

But, it has been a long 24-hours living not far from Burlington and the Cascade Mall. The shootings last night were surreal, and tragic, and everything that everyone has ever said about unnecessary violence. This time, it was just down the street.

But isn’t it always? Just down the street? Somebody’s street is always just down or out of the way of the latest violent act of randomness.

I was in Mount Vernon last night. I drove right by the mall on my way. I almost stopped to buy more underwear, because, I need some. But I didn’t because life and plans got in the way and I was running late. The only reason I bring it up is that it could be ANY of us buying something at a Macy’s counter on ANY random night.

And I think that is what has saddened me most. Why this keeps happening down any one street, or school, or movie theater, or mall just doesn’t make ANY sense to me. Violence knows no boundaries in times like these.

But I do know this.
How we choose to act on any given day makes a difference in the lives of others and our communities and for ourselves. Our choices matter. All of them. And, in my book, our world could use a whole hell of a lot more Random Acts of Kindness, if we choose. So I will.

Starting with me. Human kindness. Randomly. Thoughtfully. Repeatably.
That’s my choice.
What is yours?

Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it’s gonna rain today.…

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 197 :: ice cream for dinner

22 Jul

Day 197: Full.

Last night my little niece asked why grown-ups get to watch TV at night after everyone goes to sleep (meaning her). It’s a fair question. I remember having the same thoughts as a child. Including, Why do I have to sit at the kids table?  and more…

So tonight I relished in one thing that a Big Kid gets to do. A privilege only afforded to those who have entered the full-on experience of Adulting.

Eating Ice Cream for dinner.

And then I ordered a hamburger too.
And still had the ice cream…
It’s what Big Kids do!

I write that as I watch TV after everyone else has gone to sleep. Because, sometimes, in this overwhelming world of adutlhood, it feels good to act like a kid again.

Next, I yoga. A privilege that comes from keeping my promise.
How is your promise going?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 145 :: ski to sea

29 May

Day 145: Summer.

Welcome summer. You arrived just in time for a festival celebrating everything in between the ski (Mt. Baker) to sea (Bellingham Bay). And, it was a beautiful day.

Even though rain was predicted the sun came out and shone down across Fairhaven, which was transformed into one giant parking lot. But who cares about having to walk to the finish line from your car when others have skied, run, biked, paddled or rowed their way to the finish line.

The best spot for me was watching teams cheer on their final relay racer at the bay. As I sat on a rock next to a group who kept looking for “Chris” and then screaming for “Chris” and then realizing it was wasn’t “Chris,” I have to admit, I got pretty excited to see “Chris” too.

They pointed at every yellow kayak announcing, “That’s Chris! He’s in a yellow kayak. That’s gotta be Chris.” And then the yellow kayak would come into view and it was not Chris.

Turns out there were a lot of yellow kayaks.
And then finally, with the next statement of, That’s-gotta-be-Chris, I leaned over to the woman sitting next to me and said, “I think that is Chris!”

She laughed, then they all laughed, and then she exclaimed, “Oh my God, you’re right, it IS Chris!!!’ They leapt to their feet and ran to the edge of the water taking photos and cheering on Chris as he made his final sweeping oars to shore.

I couldn’t help but get swept up in cheering on Chris too and caught myself yelling (silently under my breath) for him from my rock. “Go, Chris!” C’mon Chris! You can do this, CHRIS!”

Then the woman turned around from the water’s edge, looked right at me and yelled, “You called it! It was Chris!”

I pumped both of my arms in the air with the universal victory sign. And then we all watched Chris run up the hill and ring the final bell signaling the very last move of his team’s trek down the mountain from Ski to Sea.

It was bright and sunny, fun and funny and full of team spirit.
And it all has me thinking about how important it is to cheer on those you love, and to even be cheered on by strangers. And the power of keeping a promise.

And now, on to one event that wasn’t in the lineup today…yoga.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 50 :: crazy good

20 Feb

Day 50. Crazy Kids.

This was sitting on our dinner table tonight:

Thanks to Table Topics at The Filling Station we were presented with this question:

“What was the craziest thing you ever did when you were a kid?”

Ah, good question. My mind raced.

Sticking my finger in an open light socket (that was a shocking one)….Picking all of my mother’s newly planted flowers because we thought they were weeds (I still blame my older sister)…

Then Justin reminded me…Falling into the Snake River because my long legs missed the jump and hit the water instead. (Thank you, Justin, for saving me).

It’s a miracle we make it to adulthood, isn’t it? Maybe that’s what makes life so crazy good.

Now, I must finish digesting the World Largest Hamburger before doing my yoga. Until then…

…What’s the craziest thing you ever did when you were a kid?

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
