JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 366 :: it’s been a year of yoga

31 Dec

Day 366: 2016.

One. Big. Year. Doing yoga every damn day! Even on trains. And planes. Here’s how this crazy year unfolded…

From trains to the “plains” I saw landscapes that took my breath away. Thank you, Amtrak! What an amazing adventure, doing yoga on a train can be:

I did yoga on planes too: (Thank you Southwest Airlines)

I did yoga near the water:

And amongst the tulips too:

Then I did yoga on top of mountains. And I mean… REALLY big mountains.
(Who knew I lived so close to these majestic wonders? Than you Stacy!)

From Denver to Dallas, and Illinois to Arizona, I did yoga on the road:

And inside the depth of canyons at Lake Powell:

I had yogi friends come and visit!

And had lots of fun with my favorite little yogis too!

Pup did yoga in my suitcase:

Brady did yoga on my dresser:

Both of them turned into little yogi knots under blankets:

I spotted a starfish doing yoga on the shore:

I bought a pair of (gasp!) Birkenstocks fit for a yogi… (they really are comfy):

And I did glow in the dark yoga on Halloween!

All year long, I learned so much more from my resident Yogi expert, Jill:

But mostly I did yoga at home. In my office. On the floor. With my mat. And usually a dog nearby. This is what I have come to believe is the true sign of a dedicated yogi — the ability to do yoga anywhere. Under any circumstances. In any place. Any time.

Even if it’s taking a deep breath. One after the other.

And from all of that I learned this: to be gentler and kinder to my zen self. I did not lose weight, I did not turn into a yoga superpower, I did not even do a headstand. But I did do this: chilled the freak out.

In fact, I feel so full of zen-ness I kind of want to go hit a ball. No, seriously. After all this yoga my body wants to play. To play a game with other people where we all go after a shared goal with a ball (and maybe a racket and cute skirt?). And, yes, to smack the hell out of that tennis ball would feel really nice. I have no idea why? Just sounds like fun.

But seriously…. I have learned so much from this year of twists and turns. Mostly, it has reinforced the fact that you CAN do anything. Even yoga – every single day – for a year.

Sometimes it’s not your best, something it’s your worst. And sometimes it’s amazingly powerful. You learn your body can do more than you ever dreamed (CROW!) even though it’s less than what all those perfect yogi people do in all the magazines. You CAN do more than you think. You just have to keep trying.

You just have to show up.

SHOW UP!
That’s the magic of any promise, or intention, or wish. My wish for you is that this New Year brings you all of your desires and hopes  …and more.

Tomorrow is 2017 and I will be back. Oh, my dear Lord, I can’t believe I’m saying this… But yes, a New Year starts tomorrow and I’ve got a New Promise — do you? (I will share mine tomorrow, right here on this blog.)

Namaste, Yoga Every Damn Day. Namaste.

More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 364 :: a year of yoga pants

29 Dec

Day 364: For real.

If this were a regular year, tomorrow would be the last day of my yoga promise. It would be my last required yoga practice. But since it’s a leap year there are two more days to go. Extra credit? Maybe. More trickery from 2016? Probably.

I am in full-on reflection mode. It’s what happens at this time of year, maybe you are too? As you look back and zoom forward seeing all that is in your past and what is in your path ahead.

Looking back, I see a year of yoga pants. Lots of yoga pants. And stretchy fitting yoga tops. I have practically lived in my yoga clothes this year, waiting for the moment I will surrender to my daily practice.

Leaping forward, I don’t see that changing. I will probably still be in yoga pants every damn day. It’s the “jeans” of our generation. It’s the uniform of choice. And quite frankly they are downright comfy soft chic. Yes, that’s a thing.

Looking back, I also realize that I have both loved and loathed my yoga practice. It has been opening and softening. It has been painful and pressure packed. It has been easy and graceful. It’s amazing how the same thing can be so different from day to day. Just goes to show how much can change in one day.

Zooming forward, I’m wondering how much can change in one year. I’m never the same person on Day 365 as I was on Day 1. It’s how this process works. I should know that by now. But it always surprises me. Will I do yoga in the future? Hell yes. Will I do it everyday. Maybe. Maybe not. Will it change over time. Oh, yes.

And that is the power of a promise. We don’t see all the little changes that add up day to day. But when we look at all of them over the journey of a year we see magic. Powerful magic.

And lots of yoga pants.
Namaste, Yoga Pants. Namaste.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 363 :: giving it all

28 Dec

Day 363: You’ve Got.

Well, 2016…. my, my, my. So many surprises. Today we send off Debbie Reynolds. I was touched by this quote I found of hers:

“I gave it all that I had, and it’s gratifying that others seem to be receiving it so well.”
-DEBBIE REYNOLDS

It seems fitting in so many ways. And it has me asking myself the same thing. Have I given it all that I had?

Have you?

This year was a year of yoga for me. And did I give it all I’ve got? Hum… I’m not sure. I certainly know I gave in to yoga each day. But did I give it all? Not sure how to measure that.

I know I failed at the Yoga Shred. But at least I started and learned and gained more knowledge. Christmas kind of landed in the middle of it, so it took a break.

I know I blogged every single day. And that, my dear, feels like the real win here. But did I give it ALL I’ve got? Not sure. Sometimes I admittedly phoned it in.

And that brings me to this: Showing Up.

I believe in showing up. I believe in doing my best. I believe in being present. I believe in trying my hardest. I’m not sure I string each of those elements together every single day but I show up. I show up. I show up.

And that, it seems, is giving it my best shot. And, truly where the magic happens.

Namaste, Showing Up. Namaste.

More tomorrow.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 357 :: lemon-aid

22 Dec

Day 357: Water.

The Yoga Shred has me all lemoned out.

I forgot about how much I love hot lemon water. I love it. Really, I do. It’s refreshing and – BONUS – detoxifyin’ too.

So there. Shred on. Drinking my lemon water. Feeling all yoga cleansed. Now… can I have some chocolate?? I earned it, right? Right. On.

You can join the Shred course here.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 355 :: the yoga kindness

20 Dec

Day 355: Circles.

OMG it’s almost here. The end of the year. Where has the time gone? Between bitter election campaigns and the media frenzies that followed, it’s hard to believe 2016 was only one year. It feels more like two, or at least one and a half.

I probably couldn’t have chosen a better year to dive headfirst into yoga. Or hide my head in downward dog to avoid it all. And yet, ironically, I find myself back where I started. Doing yoga. At home. Every night.

It’s like running in one big circle. Same yoga, same time, same mat.

Speaking of circles, we gave our niece a microscope for her birthday. An honest to goodness college level microscope. She couldn’t have been happier. Like squeal at the top of her lungs delighted. We spent the evening looking at slides and the patterns that all sorts of bugs and bacteria make when blown up ten bazillion degrees.

The pattern I noticed was a circle. So many circles. Blood. Butterfly wings. Lymph nodes. Ink. Cells. Cell walls. All circular in nature. It made me stop and think, and notice, that in many ways we travel in circles. Maybe it’s because we are made up of circles.

And so, I find it ironic, that I am ending the year where I began – boosting my yoga practice. Tonight was Day 8 of the Shred. And we worked on upper body physique.

Why is that ironic? At the beginning of the year I was working on my upper body strength with yoga. Just trying to make it through a few planks to get back in shape to go back to power yoga.

What is that ironic? Because this year has taught me a different kind of yoga. The one of kindness. Yes… Kindness. Not power.

Well, actually kindness is pretty powerful I have learned.  It takes more strength to be kind. It takes more resiliency to remain kind. It takes a heart of gold and abs of steel (okay, maybe not abs of steel but still…) to operate from a place of kindness.

That’s a circle. A golden circle. Some call it the Golden Rule. Something I was taught as a little girl. Isn’t it funny how long it takes to learn a lesson?

There is strength and power in being kind. It’s not about being NICE, don’t be confused. It’s about treating ourselves and others in the highest of regards and expecting, no demanding, that back in return.

Aha! See? Another circle.
The roots of kindness grow into the leaves of joy.

Tomorrow there will be more Shred Challenge. You can join the course here.
Namaste, Kindness. Namaste.

Jamie

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 354 :: yoga is not

19 Dec

Day 354: Enough.

Back to the “Shred” tonight. And in it, the message was: “Yoga is not enough.”

Ah…. so that’s interesting. After a year of doing yoga, come to find out, it’s NOT enough!?

Really, the point was that if you want to be toned and in shape, you can’t get there by only traveling the road of Yoga. And I believe it. Because really, is there ever just one way, one thing, one tactic, one exercise, one moment that creates success?

In all aspects of life the best results seem to come from a mix of many moments that all add up. Because every moment counts.

Tomorrow there will be more Shred Challenge. You can join the course here.

JAMIE’S BLOG – YEAR 6 – YOGA DAY 346 :: shredding along

11 Dec

Day 346: Day 2.

It’s on. A 21-Day Yoga Shred. Today is officially Day 2.

Today, I have to admit I wasn’t very excited to do the work. It was all about alignment. Align what? Exactly. Sometimes I just like to dig in, try it, take action, rip the band-aid off before reading the directions. I guess in many ways, yoga is like that for me too. I just do it.

But sometimes just doing it (no offense, Nike) isn’t what is best for your body.

And I have to say, after practicing a few moves tonight with proper alignment I am more than satisfied. Giddy almost with the results. It FEELS so much better and more FUN. I suppose that has much to do with feeling good inside each pose and giving the proper placement and sequence to each move.

And that reminds me of something: there is power in alignment.

Whether it is with a few yoga moves or a massive movement of common interests for our highest good. When we take the proper steps in the best direction, we create massive energy. Instead of “half-assing” your way through (as my father used to say).

And so with that…. I say, have a great, properly aligned week ahead!

Day 343: Progress.

If yoga has taught me anything this year… it is this:

We are always a work in progress. And now, almost a year into this promise I can do things I couldn’t at the beginning of the year. Crow. Jumping forward on my mat. Breathing deeper. Trying to be calm.

Here’s to progress!
