Day 270: Family.
We spent the day with family today, and I watched Justin take on the role he loves best: Uncle Justin. There was much football and games, and food and crafts, and basketball. That’s what Uncle’s do when they have two little nieces.
But the thought that kept running through my mind was that of my Great Uncle. Kermie, that is. He turned 80 today and doesn’t look a day over 40…and I couldn’t be more proud. He is a GREAT uncle.
He taught me to roller blade. He let me move into his spare bedroom when I was fresh out of college and headed into the big, wide world of Washington, D.C. (long enough to save my first paycheck for my first rent check to get on my feet for the first time in my life).
He has a way with words too. You know, the kind of words that rhyme. Or the kind of words that form the perfect sentence full of deep thoughts, wrapped in wit with humor on top.
He’s a gourmet cook and taught me to appreciate the delicacy of food that wasn’t a hamburger or a pizza, or at least a deep appreciation for watching him cook me something that wasn’t a hamburger or a pizza.
In his kitchen, he used to always say, “We can eat whatever we want because we are Big Kids now.”
And, even to this day, on his 80th birthday, I have no idea if he truly understands how special all of those moments were to me. Or how important he made me feel. Or how much fun he made being a grown up look to me.
So, to my dear GREAT Uncle Kermie – happy birthday! May you get to do whatever you want, eat whatever you want, and enjoy whatever you want. You are, after all, a Big Kid now.
Love you…. so much!
(P.S. Yoga done).
More tomorrow.
Lovemore,
Jamie
